in antioch today, authorities posted signs declaring unsafe, the house where jaycee was held captive for 18 years. and where she gave birth to two daughters, fathered police believe by her kidnapper, phillip garrido. remarkably the two girls, now 11 and 15, show up in a photograph taken a few weeks ago at a birthday party for this woman's daughter. >> they seemed like regular, normal children and they came and had a good time. >> reporter: garrido was with the girls and they didn't stay long. >> he took them home because he said they're not used to this type of surroundings. >> reporter: the surroundings they were used to are shown in the first photos from inside the secret backyard compound. trash is piled high around a tumbled down tent. inside, clothing, mattresses, old furniture and toys sit in disarray. it was all hidden from the house by a wooden fence lined with junk. california corrections officials are defending the parole officer who regularly visited the property yet failed to discover the concealed backyard. >> a fence that appears to end the property, would you go then h

they're back at it today in antioch, california.ee dugard and keeping her captive for 18 years. most have pleaded not guilty. police say dugard's 1991 kidnap ing of two other young girl ls. both were abducted from cities less than 50 miles from antioch. dugard and garecht even looked alike. police say there were also similarities in the getaway vehicle in the cases and on the car found on garrido's property. >>> we're following a story about a drive-by shooting. this is a high school that happens to be in antioch, california. a town about 60 miles east of san francisco. police say a male student was shot multiple times near deer valley high. he was transported to a hospital by helicopter. we don't know the condition. this occurred a couple of hours ago. the shooting led to a lockdown of city schools. still no word on whether police have made any arrests. >>> the white house says president obama doesn't believe he's being criticized because of his race, but not everyone is so sure. yesterday the house passed a resolution mostly along

investigators showed up at garrido's property in antioch, california today. they say that is where he kept jaycee dugard in a ramshackle structure. that is where he raped her repeatedly after pulling her off the street when she was but 11 years old. that is where they say that dugard gave birth to garrido's two children. authorities say that this is about garrido. >> people committing these offenses tend to be predatory and have multiple victims. shepard: he did have at least one previous a victim, including -- according to authorities. he spent 11 years in prison for a kidnapping and rape. two young girls involved have never been found. claudia, there are some definite similarities between the dugard case and these other kidnappings. give us the details. >> yes, some startling similarities, starting with age, appearance, and manner of objection. jaycee dugard, -- like jaycee dugard, one of the girls was just nine years old when she was wiped out of the supermarket in the bay area city of hayworth in 1988. the other was kidnapped when she was walking out of s

so she's driven straight to antioch. the backyard compound is ready for her.ow long is she in this backyard before she sees the light of day? >> she's in the backyard for approximately three to three and a half years before they let her out into the public. i can only imagine that that's how long that it took to brainwash her, to make sure that she wouldn't go to the authorities, and so that phillip could have his way with her and do the despicable things that he did. it's three and a half years. of course, the children were born later. and that adds an entirely different dynamic to this. i guess that's the one that really gets to me, because i have young girls. and you can only imagine the dichotomy of thinking they must be going through. because phillip dugard -- or phillip garrido is their father. and he's taken from these little girls. and i'm sure they don't see him in the same light that jaycee saw him. so what must they be going through psychologically. and how are they going to recover from this. >> that's a great question. let's ask that to dr. brenda

the investigation is progressing although their antioch home has been closed off. they are not doing anything, any type of search there at this point. right now, they are trying to figure out how they missed so many opportunities to find her over the years. >> let's talk about that real quick, sam. do we have the number correct here, three years, two dozen visits? >> reporter: well, no it was more than that. >> more than that. >> reporter: he was on lichtime parole since 1999 on parole supervision by the state of california. now, they've told me that he would have been visited typically two or three times a month. at that home. so, you, you know, multiply that times ten years and then you look at the other cases where people came to the home, his home was the subject of this 1972 case, this rape allegation that was lodged against him back then three years after he graduated from high school. he picked up allegedly picked up a couple of young girls at the time and was later charged with drugging and raping one much them repeatedly while in the course of that alleged

let's go to george lewis in the antioch, california, town there where the garridos live.man bodies buried in the garrido's back yard. why the interest in two unsolved cases in the '80s and the m.o. was similar to the jaycee dugard kidnapping in that all three girls taken in broad daylight and driven away in old cars and cars that may match the description of a vehicle taken from the garrido property. they've been using dogs trained to sniff for human remains. they've been using ground penetrating radar and found what they call some anomalies in back yard. the dogs alerted on a couple of occasions, so that's why the dig. thus far, police say they've found no evidence linking the garridos to these unsolved kidnapped cases. the mother of one of the girls, michaela garecht, the mother was here to thank the police for their continuing efforts but she says it is frustrating not having any concrete information about the fate of her daughter. >> been very stressful. you know, today knowing what is going on here, we had a very hard day and haven't been feeling very well. >> report

it was found in the backyard of the home next to the garrido home in antioch.gs that were searching there august 30th discovered the bone fragment. and it's significant because police in the area were looking into whether garrido might be linked to the killings of young women there in the late 1990s that were never solved. garrido had access to this backyard at one point. he apparently lived in a shed there. and so the neighbor who lives in that house gave them permission to search the yard. and they turned this up. now they're going to turn it over to the state labs to see if they can develop some dna off it. confirm that it is human, and then go from there to see if it can be linked to any other missing persons cases. >> let's talk about, sam, the history. phillip garrido, i mean, his history with that area of that home, it goes back a long way, doesn't it? >> all the way back to the early 1970s at least. >> okay. and let's refresh everybody's garrido's past, that checkered past. just horrific as we see the crimes there culminating with what he did to poor ja

dan simon, you've been in antioch. you've been all over this. experts that follow these things with pedophiles and sexual offenders tell us that the average sexual offender can have anywhere from 100 to 400 victims throughout their lifetime. so the fact that philip garrido has been tied to one that we know of and a violent rape before leaves an awful lot of concern that there are other victims out there. what does law enforcement think about this? >> dr. phil, i've often heard you say the best predictor of future behavior is past behavior. but in terms of what authorities are saying, the bottom line is they don't know if he's connected to these other cases. that's why they're spending so much time out at the house. we can tell you that starting on monday police are going to be back out there looking at the soil. they're going to be digging it up. we know that a couple of cadaver dogs picked up a scent. they zeroed in on one particular area. they brought out magnetometers to day and confirm there is something unusual beneath the soil. i think onc
