arwa, thanks for coming back. a battle to retake the main city of mosul is looming.second biggest city and the largest one that isis still occupies. how important is retaking the city in terms of the overall fight to destroy isis? >> well, it is one city but it is an extremely important crossroads and historically it's a magnificent city that needs to be back in iraqi hands. so there is some great symbology. so there is some economic reasons. but first and foremost, it is a major city that needs to be under the control of iraq. iraq is fighting for its identity, and in order to claim it, you have to be able to control the land. you've got to be able to control the ground. that's the key about mosul. you've got to get in there and it's going to be a horribly nasty fight in order to retake it. >> the iraqi army and peshmerga are closing in around the city, taking towns on the outskirts. they're tightening the noose. couldn't isis fighters melt back into this population? >> there's certainly a possibility even if they manage to take back mosul and that's going to be ext

arwa damon is now live in erbil, iraq. what did you and your crew see today, arwa? incredible scenes, brooke, because not only did you have those dark skies that already created such an ominous atmosphere, pretty much ever since the iraqi security forces began to attempt to enter the town of gunyatta itself, there were ongoing explosions. they were coming up on roadside bombs. they are five suicide bombers set to target their positions. there were bursts of fairly intense gunfire happening throughout. imagine, 10,000 families are stuck inside, families, parents with children, who don't know how to keep them safe in all of this. then of course there is the added concern that isis, as it has done in the past, could possibly, and mostly is using these families as human shields. that just makes the job for the iraqi security forces that much harder as they are trying to move through and clear what is a very vital strategic town as they continue to advance towards mosul. what we are seeing in just this one town, brooke, is a fraction of what we are potentially going to b

arwa damon is reporting for us from qayyara, iraq. >> reporter: just take a look at how desolate it isned the road is, at least in this direction. this was the main road that cut through the town. this was the main market here. it was a thriving place before isis took over this town some two years ago. more than two years ago. then still have this thick black smoke billowing above it. and that is from the crude oil that isis was burning to try to impair visibility of coalition aircraft and drones. residents were telling us they had been burning this crude oil for about the last six months. these forces here are part of iraq's counterterrorism unit. they were the ones that first came in and really led this operation to liberate the city. you see some of the kids, there were a lot more children out earlier. the kids are wearing three-quarter pants or shorts now and they weren't allowed to do this under isis. it may seem like something that is very basic, but just to be able to do that right now for them is a novel experience to a certain degree. a lot of the residents that we have been t
