this is a google earth look at the new eastern span of were looking at it from above treasure island. you can see the old bridge there in the background. two parts.. the skyway suspension tower section which is here. this part of the deck actually hangs from the tower. the bolts that we're talking about are located here. this tower is what's called pier e-2. it's located right where the skyway portion of the bridge meets the suspension tower section. now, if we move in a little closer you can see that there's actually a gap between the deck of the thank bridge and the top of the the support towers. in between are these devices, which are bearings and what are called shear keys. these devices are designed these are bolted to the towers by rods that run between 9 and 24 feet deep into the concrete. these are the bolts that are breaking. and another problem is that they are breaking inside the tower. and because the deck is in place, it's impossible to remove the bolts or to repair them. there are a total of 288 anchor rods here, 32 have broken and caltrans is currently testing the rest

"today in the bay's" christie smith joins us live on treasure island with a lock at all the details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. caltrans is expected to provide the public an update on those 288 anchor rods while a retired materials engineer in the east bay has come forward and contacd caltrans. he thinks that more of these rods could break and snap off in the new eastern span unless caltrans does a couple of things, replacing the bolts with less vulnerable steel, according to the contra costa times. chung submitted an unsolicited analysis this week, retired from be be becthtel, expected to meet with the program manager of the bridge on monday. he also recommended new testing for high pressure steel in the future of all projects. he believes, in his words, caltrans fell on its face. more than a month after caltrans discovered 32 broken rods, it's still trying to iron out a fix. crews are keeping a close eye on the second batch of these rods made two years after the faulty ones. >> they're built to the same specifications, so why did one group of connecting

we come here to treasure island because it gives you a good look at the work and the area. there is the new span. and this morning the question still remains, how are they going to fix this problem? and is this bridge going to open on time? now let's talk about the problem. here's the problem with the bolts. 288 they are looking at. we do know it happened in early march when dozens broke. the bolts are huge as you can see is from the video and what they do is secure a certain point of the bridge that leads to stability. they have had meetings about this several of them already. and the updates have basically said look, we think the problem is hydrogen. it's making them brittle. they could break. none of the other ones have broken but we still want to take a much closer look at what is is happening there. and because that is a little bit of a complicated fix, that could take time and could delay the opening of the bay bridge which is set for labor day.y. at this point what we are doing is waiting to see what the their analysis says. a report by a retired vectal engineer says
