i want to turn to athena jones. she has been in the middle of the crowd there and she is on the phone with me now. athena, we have all been to football games. we know the atmosphere that surrounds certainly a college football game. does it feel like a college football game? does it feel like the mood we're always used to having outside of a stadium or is it totally different today? >> it does feel like a normal college football game. there have been people lining up here, arriving. they're starting to cook or drink or in many cases continuing to drink. there's a lot of excitement, the usual excitement you see. people wearing penn state gear, penn state gash and also people talking just as mike was talking about, the way the school handled the issue with coach paterno, expressing concern. one interesting thing i should mention is that someone hired a plane, one of those small planes in the banner to fly around the stadium and the banner reads, joe is so dirty he needs a shower. so there's definitely a big mix of emot

i want to bring in athena jones now. many penn state students did not react well to the news that paterno was fired on wednesday. mary alluded to it earlier. we saw the rioting on the campus, a news van overturned. and today is senior day. and the team lost a tough game to nebraska by three points. mary says it seems somber where she is. is it a similar mood there where you are? >> well, it doesn't seem like there's any rioting going on. there are still some people who are out tailgating still. but in terps ms of when we saw people leaving the game. there was a sense of resignation. there were a few chant of "we are penn state." but a lot of people didn't like how they were portrayed in the media, they don't want to have the same thing happen again. so a lot of the fans we talked with, a lot of the players, families and friends, members of penn state and the penn state community that have been coming to games for years had a hard time with how they say the media portrayed what happened on wednesday night. they argued tha

athena, what have they been saying? >> hi, fred, you know, it's interesting because we've been here since early this morning. in many ways it's been just like your typical college tailgating party. people have been arriving streaming in to cook, drink, continue to drink, there have been mixed emotions. we've seen people walking in shirts saying the legend and the years joe paterno served. we also have people say we need to pay attention to what's going on with the children, abuse victims themselves. let's listen to what one fan had to say. she summed it up really well. >> i think everybody is focusing on joe and not so much what happened. they are worried about his image and everything he should have done. really it's not about him, it's about the kids. >> reporter: and so amidst the sea of blue you're seeing here, a lot of people in penn state that dark blue and white, also seeing folks wearing blue shirts saying stop child abuse. trying to cover both sides. people believe the university should have handled it differen

and athena, you've had a chance to talk to a number of the die hard fans in the game and those out on campus. what have they been saying to you? >> reporter: well, it's been really interesting, fredericka, because as use described, it's been far from a typical week for penn state at penn state. and it looked like a typical college football tailgating party as people streamed in, set up to do their cooking and do their drinking. we talked to a lot of fans, and there were a lot of mixed feelings. you had people with these shirts on that said the legend. they had joe paterno's years of service on, signs that say penn state spirit is about more than football. you also have people who have really criticized us in the media saying we've blown things out of proportion, that we kind of caused the school to act earlier than they should have when it came to joe paterno. it's been a real mix of emotions. let's listen to what one penn state alumni had to tell me in the parking lot. >> one of the things that gets lost in this is nobody -- no sane person thinks that the victims are not the children

athena jones, thank you so much.is here in the studio, wolf blitzer. >> i remember that shooting. i was the white house correspondent for cnn and it was very, very scarry. it was on the north lawn of the white house. some guy, a saturday morning and just started shooting, spraying along the north portico, which is the official entrance where dignitaries come for state dinners, as you have been many occasion. some of those state differents at the white house. if you see those pictures, it was very, very frightening and i remember that plane that landed on the south lawn, a small plane and skidded all the way up to the south portico of the white house, i was covering that. so, this is fritd thing when you see this. and it is one of t reasons why after the oklahoma city bombing in '95, they basically shutdown pennsylvania avenue outside of the white house. they don't want people to get too close to what's going on. >> no driving. >> the fact that this guy allegedly managed to penetrate a window on the south side of the

athena jones is live at the white house. good morning, athena. what's the latest on this?> reporter: good morning. we can tell you that this afternoon in pittsburgh, federal court, on 2:00 p.m. we expect to see oscar ortega-hernandez to make his first appearance. we know the park police were charging him with carrying a dangerous weapon. let's talk about how he was tracked down. ever since friday night, there has been a national lookout for ortega-hernandez. they knew he had been hanging around indiana, pennsylvania. they passed out pictures and got a tip from a staff errata hampton inn who called authorities yesterday morning to say that they had seen ortega. ortega-hernandez had been staying at that hotel in the days leading up to friday's incident and left and was staying with a few people and left. he would come back and that's when the -- staffers there called authorities there. arrested him in the lobby without any resistance. >> what are we learning about him and maybe his motivation here? i mean, they are saying investigators are saying he had a distinct interest i

athena jones has been following it for us. what can you tell us?reporter: as you mentioned, the secret service had a national lookout for this suspect since friday night. he had been known to have been hanging around this particular area of indiana, pennsylvania. so the secret service went around there, passed out flyers with his picture on it to various hotels. today they got a tip from staffers at a hampton inn. they found him, arrested him in the lobby without incident. the police said he stayed at that particular hampton inn in the days leading up to friday's incident. the staffers recognized him and alerted authorities. we're also told by law enforcement officials that the fbi and secret service have questioned him and we expect to see him make an appearance in federal court tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. in pittsburgh. >> no idea as to a motive at this point? >> not yet. that's certainly what we'll be waiting to hear tomorrow. we haven't heard anything coming out of the questioning by these officials of this suspect. we also -- we do know he does have

athena jones is there. what in the world is going on at the white house? >> well, first of all, as we know, the president and first lady have been gone for several days. they're out traveling. but on friday night there was a shooting down near the ellipse that is about 700, 800 yards of the white house. that happened on friday. police, after a few minutes, found a car that had been abandoned. park police said that inside that car they found a semi-automatic weapon. fast forward to yesterday. yesterday they discovered two rounds of bullets at the white house and it hit the white house building. one of them went through the glass but was stopped by that second layer of ballistic glass, which, of course, is there to protect the occupants of the white house. another round was found nearby. now, i just spoke with, we got a statement from the secret service. they haven't conclusively linked those bullets to friday's incident. as we know, they were found on the south side closest to that incident. still several hundred yards away. secret service have said that th

let's get right to cnn's athena jones outside penn state's beaver stadium where more than 100,000 fans are watching this last home game of the season. so the game is almost over, how are things unfolding today? >> reporter: well, the game's almost over and looks like nebraska's still ahead. we'll see what happens in the last few minutes of the game. but we arrived here earlier this morning. and at the beginning it looked like your typical college football tailgating party. lots of people, fans alumni, friends and family. in their penn state colors, cooking and drinking and talking and throwing around footballs. we talked to a lot of the fans. there were a lot of mixed feelings out there. people feel the university acted too quickly in firing joe paterno. people who wanted to give him a chance to speak. he's released a statement, but he's not going to be able to speak on the advice of his lawyers for some time. and there are people who say we've been focusing too much on joe paterno and not on the alleged victims of the child abuse. let's listen to what one fan had to say about that thi

athena jones has been following it for us.cribed what allegedly the assassinator said about the president. >> reporter: the suspect had quite a bit to say about president obama according to three witnesses investigators spoke with. those witnesses say over the past year ortega-hernandez has become increasingly agitated about the federal government. and that president obama himself was part of the problem. they say he wanted to, quote, hurt obama, that he called him the anti-christ, called him the devil. said he needed to be taken care of and, quote that he needed to kill him. so those are some of the details coming out of the criminal complaint today. >> all right, ortega-hernandez faces up to life in prison if he is convicted. >>> there are new developments in the penn state rape scandal. we have more victims expected to come forward. we're going to tell you that in just a couple of moments. >>> and then andrew weil coming "outfront" talking about how we can all be a little happier. speaking of doctors, president obama might
