it cost atlantic city 4 casinos and 8,000 jobs, so what's the prescription for atlantic atlan' sure survival? >> we have bargain basement prices, people coming down looking for a home at the shore, you go to any of the towns north on south you're talking about half a million dollars for a condo. >> reporter: the casino crisis has crushed the valley of the city's properties especially casinos and property taxes skyrocketed 29% last year and 22% the year before. guardian is slashing city budgets including police and fire. that's not good news for business and investors who are worried about crime blocks from the boardwalk. guardian knows he needs millions of dollars from the state. he needs tourists who are not coming to gamble. guardian is atlantic city's first openly gay mayor. this past summer he planted the flag to make new york avenue beach a gay-friendly beach. you said this is where you came when you wented to have a good time. straight people came to these places, too, because they wanted to dance and party in the hottest clubs. is this your vision. >> the nightclubs we have in atlanti

what's wrong in atlantic city? >> you had competition rising a you will over the place. since 2004, 26 new casinos have been built in the mid atlantic in the new england area. about 20-25 within within hour's drive, our and a half drive itself, that's a lot of competition. so what's happened is the feeder markets to atlantic city have been cut, so pennsylvania's now a billion dollars casino market in its own right, maryland is becoming a casino market in its own right. >> the aqueduct racetrack there, the racing there, you've got a bunch of new competition, gamblers who have role alternatives. you have the fact that atlantic city has never been good at figuring how to get people to come to atlantic city. >> that's a big issue. vegas has figured out how to do it. it's become a resort destination, but it also has nearby competition now. they've got indian casinos in california, elsewhere in they have perfect, so there's competition for vegas, too. we saw what atlantic city did try to do with this revel casino. it was pretty spectacular. it was a pretty nice resort. they exp

matt delucia is live in atlantic city. tell us what will happen there today. >>> tracy, the hotel portion of revel will close at 11:00 a.m. today. the casino will close tomorrow morning. you can see the lights are on in the hotel rooms here. people are spending the last night here as this hotel is revel. right next door is the showboat. the lights are already out. the big difference between these two resorts is that showboat had been open for 27 years, revel was just open for two. look at some video here. we were here yesterday as workers at the showboat were putting up signs saying the casino was closed. a little more than 2,000 people worked here. some have been able to get new jobs at other casinos, but it's been fairly tough as these are not the first two properties to shut down. atlantic club closed in january. then showboat yesterday. now revel and later this month trump plaza is scheduled to close. gaming revenue in atlantic city has dropped by almost half i've been walkitalking with patrons, blame the economy, and
