the bay bridge is closed. it will continue to stay closed until possibly tuesday morning at 5:00 a.m. looks like everything is on schedule. we have this jack south 880 in toward hayward. as the heavier volume combines with folks off the castro valley y and head toward the san mateo bridge as one of your alternates. an earlier crash at the toll plaza involving three vehicles. it sounds like it's still affecting your second lane. that will be an added issue over the bay and toward the san mateo bridge westbound which has finally smoothed out. heavier volume there, early morning across the dumbarton bridge. expect a little delay and allow extra time even if you're close to the bridges. northbound 101 with typical slowing north of 680 toward 880. the south bay looks like the volume is a little lighter. a lot of folks planning on getting out of town as we approach the labor day weekend. we'll end with the north bay. if you use the richmond-san rafael bridge, you're concerned with 101. hoor are the curves as terra l

i turned over toward the bay bridge. my friends in our operations center, gary and ben are looking over here. they've been scanning it. the lower deck, that's the taillights traveling away to the left. that's getting out of san francisco. saw a lot of flashing lights heading in that direction. the upper deck, the headlights into san francisco, we also saw flashing lights. we should see another set in another minute or so. what's going on, it sounds like they're sending folks out of san francisco. fire crews are looping back around at treasure island and coming back into san francisco. it sound like the car fire blocking two lanes of the upper deck is just before you get to that first san francisco off-ramp. so they can't get there unless they loop back around. there you'll see slowing and you'll see more slowing getting into the city. we'll look at another angle from emeryville. it was backed up heading toward the s curve. it's moving more smoothly now. but we should see this continue to build through the low clouds. you

the bay area ferry saw a 60% boost. to give you an idea how many more passengers, the day before the bridge closed more than 3,000 people took the ferries. yesterday morning there were more than 4700 people who took advantage of the waterways. it was actually the regular riders who were the ones worried they couldn't get a spot. >> this morning it was before 4 a.m., left my house an hour before the first boat left because i wanted to get a seat and be comfortable and leave early really because i don't want to have to deal with the crowds at the end of the day. >> reporter: the ferries have stepped up services to accommodate for the influx of commuters. san francisco bay ferry added several more departures from the oakland, alameda, vallejo and harbor bay terminals. golden gate ferry will be adding extra departure today, as well. and just like bart, we saw the parking lots here fill up very quickly in the morning. so the best plan for commuters this morning is really to leave early. reporting live in alameda, cate caugir
