saturated north bay. and we're seeing some pretty widespread rain here. and there are some pockets of some heavy rain that we're seeing just north of santa rosa, as well as parts of northern napa county. as we get a closer look, we can see the rain is coming down from bodega bay to santa rosa and extending over toward yountville and farther to the north, as well as down to petaluma and now approaching novato. this is a part of the next storm system that will be in and out of here quickly. that's the good thing, is that we're not expxpecting ts to have a major impact. opening up the picture, we can see there's still several more storms developing out in the pacific, but a lot of them will take a more northerly turn and avoid the bay area after today. so we are going to see this wave of rain coming through over the next couple of hours. by 9 to 10:00, it is still raining across much of the north bay and into the south bay, but by 430 during that evening commute, we're expecting things to clear out. so we wi

of course the bay bridge bay is used to that. in the north bay, we tend to have that fog convening just north of novato. that will be a factor heading north in through petaluma and coming acrcross like yesterday. the carquinez is in the benicia bridge. we have a lot of fog registering for north across the delta along the delta. highway four has that same amount of fog or visibility may be a factor. no major problems yesterday, but it's creeping down to highway 24 and the caldecott tunnel, so we'll watch for those sensitive commute areas early in the commute. just in the last three minutes we've seen this, the sensors have lit up again northbound 680. overnight we had road work traveling up with a full closure of 680 through pleasanton, out of sunol and heading up to dublin. those lanes have cleared up, the sensors have lit up, but i'm going to watch to make sure all those crews are clear. on and off ramps may take a few more minutes. a smooth drive and notice, like yesterday, even though we often see fog through dublin, we don't

light showers reported over the north bay. the central bay into the south bay earlier this morning. futurecast model. quarter inch or less expected as we go into the next few hours and then into the afternoon, we are going to be mainly dry. if you're going to be out holiday shopping, maybe you're thinking about santa con. your outdoor festivities should be a-okay. the sierra, though, will continue to see that snow with the winter storm warning until 10:00 this evening for us on the timing notice by about noontime, perhaps a few scattered showers remaining, but then continuing to dry out into the afternoon. it's also a windy one out there, as you may be well aware of. and as we move through the morning hours, the wind advisory will expire for the east bay hills as well as the santa clara valley. but even into the afternoon, especially in our hills, likely to remain breezy. so do expect a partly cloudy, mainly dry, breezy afternoon temperatures right now 53 degrees in san francisco and for the afternoon, upper 50s to low 60s. so a little bit it's going to be cool, but it's going to be

bay area. this next storm system coming in looks a little bit stronger, and may also pack some more gusty winds. and then it does start to taper off on sunday. so it's mostly saturday that we're going to see the rain. and even at what we're looking at for today could be another quarter to half inch of rainfall. and then looking at the weekend there's going to be much more. and we will see our rainfall totals anywhere from an inch and a quarter to possibly over three inches for parts of the north bay. and then at the same time, we're going to see our king tides return. that't's the tidal flooding that happens with the gravitational pull of the moon that's going to kick in starting tomorrow and then continuing into monday. and so you might want to allow some extra travel time, especially if you have to do the park and ride from marin county, those usual spots that flood. and then while we get rain, we're going to see the sierra get a decent amount of snow this weekend, about 1 to 2ft. we're alrea

nbc bay area. the manhunt continues for the shooter who killed the ceo of united health care. this was outside of a hilton hotel in new york, just blocks away from rockefeller center. now a warning for you. the images we're about to show some would consider graphic, and you may find them upsetting. nypd detectives, they are saying that they don't have a motive at this time, but every indication is that this was premeditated, targeted attack. 50 year old brian thompson arrived in new york on monday from minnesota to speak at united health care's annual investor conference at a hilton hotel. he can be seen in the surveillance video here. yesterday morning, walking down west 54th street. that's when that man you see there in the dark jacket with a gray backpack pulls out the gun, firing at thompson three times. all of this happened in front of a woman who was able to run away unharmed. a man also watched this all unfold from his car. a shock, you know, because it's the first time i see crying in front

today in the bay's bob redell joins us live from the east bay. and, bob, you know, we've heard so much talk about it. how concerned should we be as like average people? good morning to you, chris. the california department of public health says the risk to people is low. there are less than 70 cases of bird flu and people nationwide, about half of them here in california. and most of them are mild cases. there's only been one report of a hospitalization that was a severe case and that was in louisiana. and so far there's no reports of person to person spread of bird flu in our state. almost all infections have been from exposure to infected cattle. so why the concern? well, experts say flu viruses are constantly mutating. it's possible the bird flu could eventually become more dangerous as a result. it's not there yet, but that is why there are two separate press conferences later this morning, both at 11 a.m. the college of american pathologists. they'll show us how pathologists and clical laboratories are diagnosing and managing the bird flu. a

welcome to nbc bay area news at 4:30. we've been tracking this story on air and online since the earthquake hit at around 1045 this morning. even though the epicenter is some 250 miles north of san francisco, we certainly felt the effects here. people were put on notice to evacuate along our coastline for a potential tsunami that never materialized. the powerful 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck northern california, prompting a brief tsunami warning for the coast. the quake hit just before 11 this morning, about ten miles southwest of scotia, off the coast of humboldt county. a tsunami warning was issued urged people to head to higher ground, but it was downgraded in about an hour. a video just into our newsroom shows how intense the shaking was. this you see right here is surveillance video from humboldt flour company showing the moment the quake hit. you can see the cannabis plants violently shaking as the lights flicker. dozens of aftershocks have rattled the region since. the largest was a 4.4. the cleanup is now underw

south bay 41. but once you get away from san jose, down towards morgan hill and gilroy, we certainly could be in those 30s, 38 here for the tri-valley. also dipping down to 36 for the north bay, san francisco 44 and the east bay, with an average here of 37. so layer it up. it's going to be that kind of a morning as we head through the afternoon, though you might not need a jacket at least all the way through the day. san jose is going to rebound to 69 degrees under sunny skies and light winds, 61in martinez 65. hayward out to antioch were also in the low 60s. 60 here in half moon bay 64 redwood city down to palo alto, woodside, atherton, los altos. temperatures also in the low 60s, san francisco 58 here across the marina. let's move it up to the north bay 62 in sonoma, 61 in bodega bay. so dry tomorrow. rain chances on the way for us by the time we get to wednesday evening. the next system is offshore. we're not concerned about this one. it is going to bring some rainfall, but should move in and ou

44 in the east bay. san francisco, 47 in the north bay, 43. daytime highs will be in the 60s to 70 across the bay area. the warmest san jose 70, napa 67. san francisco right here at 64. but rain chances. this is the good stuff here. we're still hanging on to the possibility, even though we had that strong storm a couple weeks ago that did dump historic rain on the north bay. a lot of the east bay, south bay and peninsula could use more rainfall, and we're going to stay dry this weekend. we'll stay dry, it looks like, all the way through next thursday, december the 1h. but there could be a system developing out here offshore by next thursday that could have an atmospheric river with it. and we likely would see that storm door open back up december the 14th through the 18th. some of the early estimates are showing a half to one inch, maybe even more than that. so we're going to be all over this and we'll have those details as we get closer. but at least another storm before christmas would be awesome to ge

had forecasted down through the south bay. that means rain accumulations are expected to be less than half an inch for most. some of the higher totals will be up through parts of the north bay, just a little over an inch and a half. and i talked about how we could see some intensity overnight. and we're talking about beyond that midnight marker. so if you notice this at around 2 a.m, we do get some periods of heavy downpours as the system rolls through. i also notice that the wind speeds will be picking up, but it looks like it's going to fall below that wind advisory criteria. even so gio we're talking about 20 to 30 mile per hour winds. and just as quickly as it moves through, it does look like the majority of our friday after that 5 a.m. hour will be clearing with mostly cloud cover and some scattered light activity. all right, let's talk about the conditions along the coast. so what's causing the dangerous conditions? how long will those last? well, we do have a northwest swell, and that has already intensified. and we saw

inland east bay. it is a clear start as we take a look live right now in walnut creek. we are in for lots of sunshine today, so it's going to be very much like the days we've seen recently where it starts out cool, but then it warms up nicely. just takes a while before we get there because we are going from 40 to 60 for today, a high of 66 expected in hayward and 64 in napa. a little bit cooler in parts of the inland east bay, where that central valley fog is having a little bit more of an influence and is slow to clear. so temperatures in those areas will be cooler and we'll see the same thing tomorrow. in fact, there may be some more widespread fog creeping in from parts of the sacramento valley into the delta, as well as the tri-valley. but as far as any weather systems for now, we are still clear. but the high pressure that's blocked all of these storms and kept them out over the pacific will start to move out of the way, and then eventually we'll start to see rain coming back into the forecast. t

in the east bay livermore. police arrest a man they say stole from multiple stores at the outlets in livermore over the weekend. according to store security, the man reportedly took a duffel bag to his car and left stolen items. there. livermore police say they eventually found 47 stolen items valued at $6500. they also found that he had tools to disable sensors. the man was arrested for grand theft and those stolen girl goods were returned. well, 2 women have been arrested now in cupertino after being caught stealing beauty products from ulta beauty. the store's loss prevention manager told detectives. that he followed the suspects, the car eventually made a traffic stop. and that's where police found more than $2600 worth of stolen items, including merchandise from ross. one suspect was on probation for grand theft. and both women admitted to stealing from various stores across the state. investigators say the women had planned more thefts but were booked instead into the santa clara county jail and are now f

today in the bay's bob redell joining us live this morning out in the east bay. okay, so, bob, how concerned should we all be about the virus? well, good morning to you, marcus. the cdc and the california department of public health say the risk of to people catching bird flu is low. there are just under 70 cases nationwide, about half of them here in the state of california. and almost all of them are mild cases. so far nationwide, there's only been really one documented serious case in which that person had to be hospitalized. and that was in the state of louisiana. and so far, there are no reports of person to person spread of bird flu in our state. almost all infections have been from exposure to infected cattle. so why the concern? well, experts say flu viruses are constantly mutating, so it is possible the bird flu could become more dangerous as a result. t that hs not happened yet, but that is why there are two separate press conferences later this morning, both at 11 a.m. the college of american pathologists will show us how pathologists and clinical labo

next here on today in the bay nbc bay area responds. you've done the unwrapping. it's my turn to do the unboxing to help you figure out what you can and can't recycle. i'm consur inmeve about our holiday leftovers. not talking about food here? no. what do you do with all those piles of cards? ribbon? wrapping paper. there's a lot. we asked consumer investigator chris chmura how to deal with all that holiday waste. to figure out what to do with all the boxes, bows, gift bags and ribbon, we're going to use guidance from the city of san jose. let's start with bows and ribbons. san jose says all bows and ribbons cannot be recycled. they can be thrown in the trash, or you can save them and reuse them next year. wrapping paper is easy to reuse, too, provided recipients are unwrapping carefully. ooh, butf it's ripped up beyond reuse, san jose says you can recycle most wrapping paper. don't worry about the tape. san jose says it's fine in the recycle bin. here's the one caveat wrapping paper that is shiny or contains foil and metallic pieces cannot be recycled. instead, t

emma goss, nbc, bay area news. with the holidays now just days away, a san jose nonprofit has a plea for help tonight. they need more donations. sacred heart community service in san jose is hosting its annual toy drive. today marks the third day of the drive. thousands of families picked out toys to give to their kids for the holidays, but the nonprofit has seen a decrease in donations this year compared to last. sacred heart is about 3000 toys short of its goal, so it's reaching out to the community asking for your help this holiday season. specifically, our biggest thing is we want to ensure that families don't have to make that difficult decision between putting food on the table and providing the essential needs for their family members. and i guess for us to come here and to give toys and to give support to those families of people who need it, it's pure joy. you can donate online or drop off a toy at sacred heart's facility in san jose. as for next week, the organization has limited service and will do its r
