san francisco to the east bay. same thing for the north bay. a little bit of a rain shadow in the south bay, a quarter to about three quarters of an inch. and then as we head through sunday's forecast, we'll pick up on additional rainfall. but it really looks like the target's going to be over the north bay with a half to about one inch and a third in san francisco to trace amounts down here in the south bay. so when it com to our flood concern, well, everybody should just really be careful this weekend. i think it's going to be marin, napa and sonoma counties with the highest risk of any kind of flooding. so just be careful, especially around any small creeks and streams. they will start to rise pretty quickly once we get under some of that heavier rainfall. we're not expecting huge wind gusts here, but it will kick up at times out of the southwest, 15 to about 35mph should be manageable on the wind front. temperatures here in the upper 40s to low 50s, so grab the jacket along with the umbrella. tomorrow. we're at 54, in san francisco, 49 in t

bay.ry light returns. in fact, not everyone is seeing it. but as we go towards 680, bay point and antioch, some light drizzle and shower activity, but nothing really south of there. the roadways are wet. we are still under a flood. watch through tomorrow night. 1 to 3in of rain focused in the north bay and this level two system bringing in the gusty winds. moderate to heavy rain today. minor urban flooding 54 in fremont, 56 in hayward with low to mid 50s in the north bay. so that is a lot warmer than we have been with the cloud cover. those southerly winds 11 degrees milder in livermore. here's the plan then for today, 630. most of it's in the north bay. look what happens by nine 10:00, it begins to shift to the south and east, and you're getting into some heavy rain by 11:00, 12:00, 1:00 into the east bay, south bay. hit or miss showers. and then by 2:00, heavy rain in the north bay. and that's where it's going to stay as the rest of the bay area gets a break throughout the latter part of

but the north bay is more saturated than any other part of the bay area, so the likelihood of flooding is greater there from the continuing rainfall. again, that flood advisory flood watch is in effect for the entire bay area until 10:00 tomorrow night. flooding is possible on small rivers, streams, creeks, roadways, 1 to 3in of rain total will fall from this current storm. i'll have more on the next seven days, a little bit later on. >> yeah, timing. pretty key in this one. spencer. thank you. now, this much needed n has affected everyone from first responders to drivers just trying to navigate slippery roads. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard is live for us in san rafael right now, where flooding is a very real concern across the north bay. cornell. >> hey, dion. yeah, we've seen lots of minor flooding today from sausalito all the way up to santa rosa. and like spencer says, the rain has tapered off for now, but more is on the way. lots of outdoor events got canceled today, too, because of the weather. pedestrians, beware of the splash. rain is bringing slippery road conditions

showers over the central bay and south bay at the moment. maybe a little bit of drizzle, but not a lot going on for you. as well as the santa cruz mountains. and this morning we are much warmer and winds are generally light. fairfield reporting calm conditions. concord is calm. a light breeze in santa rosa, novato, napa all reporting five miles per hour. and take a look at the temps anywhere from 5 to 10 degrees warmer compared to yesterday, up by 13 in oakland, where temperatures are 54 degrees 53. in san francisco. so a relatively mild start to the day. but it is a soggy start to the day, and those scattered showers are expected to turn into moderate rain at some point over the course of the afternoon. a better look at what we can expect for today, as well as the rest in the extended forecast coming up. >> all right. thanks, rosemary. well, the entire bay area is under a flood watch until sunday night, and people in flood prone areas should be prepared. >> and that would be up in the north bay. ktvu is betty yu live in larkspur this mornin

this is at 7:00 in the morning from the north bay to the south bay. we'll stay under this from 7 a.m. right through 11 a.m. should begin to break up. once we hit around 3:00 in the afternoon, and then we're just left with some scattered rain chances tomorrow night. but here's where we'll get into some issues. is the fact that that atmospheric river, as we showed you, is just going to kind of sit and hang out. so here it is on sunday. also staying with us here in some part on monday and then into tuesday. eventually this exits as we head into wednesday and that give us a break. so rainfall totals for this is the first round of heavy rainfall, i think we'll be okay. we might get some of that isolated street flooding totals one to about 1.5in for most of the bay area, except for the south bay. that'd be about a 2:45 quarters of an inch. sunday. still manageable for us here. san francisco a third of an inch, right around a 10th of an inch in san jose, north bay. you'd get another half to one inch. but what i'm concerned about right now, if this forecast h

a 10th to 2/10 from the south bay. east bay could see upwards of a half inch. then we're going to add in sunday, taking us over an inch of rain in richmond, a third of an inch in san mateo, three quarters of an inch san francisco. and you can see about a third of an inch in the far east bay. and this is monday, when the heavier rain moves in. we've got over three quarters of an inch in hayward. most of the activity, two and three inches up in the north bay. and then you can see the santa cruz mountains three quarters of an inch. so the winds will kick up as well. in fact, they're calm to get going. but by that two 4:00 time period, we've got the gusty winds 20 to 30 miles an hour, even close to 40 miles an hour right on through sunday. so first, a slug of moisture bringing mostly rain, then about a foot of snow in kirkwood. this takes us through next weekend. this is our five and six feet that we need for sure. and then back home right on through the next seven days. still looking at nearly six inches santa rosa, three and perhaps upwards of maybe four inches i

and south bay leaders are trying to move the bay area forward. people who live on the streets are getting the kind of attention many of us take for granted. our ian cull shows us the crucial care the unhoused are receiving in the south bay. but let's bin with our microclimate weather alert. the atmospheric river is here. you can see showers coming down in mill valley today. this is the first significant rain we have seen in weeks. our meteorologist, vianey arana is here. and vianey a wet weekend on tap for us. it's something we definitely needed and like to see. in addition to rainfall. sierra snow is going to play into this as well. there's already chain controls in effect for a lot of those roads up there. so that's a part of your weekend plans. keep that in mind. now if you live in the south bay, this is a live look in san jose. we've got some light rain coming down, but this is just the beginning of what's to come. here's a wide look at what we're monitoring just out in the pacific. you can see here we've got that active pattern setting up th

on sunday for the entire bay area. so the weather service is concerned that there will be possibly too much rain and that could turn into a flood advisory or maybe a flood warning showing you this, the radar imagery and not a ton of coverage right now in the bay area, but still some scattered rain as we can show you right now closer to bodega bay and montreal, and then shifting the maps out toward the east bay right around san ramon, livermore, also the tracy area, and then back to the maps out here. as you can see in the pacific, there is the moisture plume developing. that's a lot of just a lot of moisture directed right toward the bay area coastline. and that will lead to increasing rainfall rates. also, winds will be a factor right now. winds are not too bad, but these numbers will be going up tomorrow. and there's a chance we could have gusts approaching 30 or 40 miles an hour. so tomorrow for your saturday, the rainfall will be picking up, especially for the morning hours. we'll have more on that with your full u

bay, likely not as much in the south bay. rain shadow there, a little bit from the mountains of the santa cruz. so we'd see about a 2:45 quarters of an inch sunday going to be manageable for most of us. we'll see anywhere from around a third in san francisco to trace amounts in the south bay, but we could be in for another half to one inch right up towards the north bay. but what i'm concerned about right now, if this forecast stays on track for us, is monday night and into tuesday. that's when that atmospheric river is going to start to move off towards the south and look at these totals monday night and tuesday. we could see one and a half to maybe three inches throughout the bay area in less than 24 hours. so this is one we are watching extremely closely again next monday and tuesday. still several days out from that happening, but we got our eyes on it right here in the russian river in guerneville, going to 28ft by next tuesday if that storm stays on track, a flood stage is 32, so we'll be real close to flood stage on th

light to moderate showers at first in the north bay, spreading across the bay area in waves, pockets of heavier rain, but no flooding issues to this point. the ground and vegetation are dry, so it's absorbed this first peak which isn't peaking yet. that happens later tonight. we'll look at that momentarily. let's look at the current radar perspective which still shows widespread light to moderate rain coming down at a good clip in san francisco, but not overly heavy at the moment. let's talk about how things evolve over the next few days. i'll have to drop the radar out of the way. you're looking at a very foggy, cloud and rain shrouded bay bridge. the flood watch goes through 10:00 p.m. sunday. there is time that's more likely to result in the flooding threat. the heaviest rain falls tonight and saturday and then showers on sunday, not as heavy or widespread, but still wet. be very flexible with any outdoor plans. the next peak of this atmospheric river arrives by monday and tuesday of next week. let's return to the floor map and talk about how things shape up through the rest of to

up in the north bay. so these are totals over the past 48 hours. look at santa rosa, over two inches of rainfall. napa approaching two inches. oakland over one inch san francisco getting there 0.91. livermore over a quarter of an inch and san jose. not much in the action. not much of rainfall action just yet. only 0.08. we still have a flood watch posted until 10 p.m. on sunday for the entire bay area, and we actually have a flood advisory indicating some minor flooding right now up in the north bay for parts of sonoma county, sebastopol to rohnert park to petaluma until 4:00 tomorrow morning. as we expand the view on the maps here, you can see the radar coverage over the past few hours and still see the action from earlier today. the coverage has been decreasing somewhat, but still some clouds. still some scattered rain showers for tonight into into your sunday. we could still be tracking some rain. we'll have more on that with your forecast update in just a little bit. >> thank you. mark this rain much

right now, the rain has begun around the bay area. very slick out there on local roads to backing things up. lot more traffic now as you're making away across the bay bridge at this time, is that rain has really kicked into gear to slow things down there out there on the roads. now the national weather service has extended their flood watches to the entire bay area through sunday evening. i think the bulk of the rain is going to come through tonight and through the day tomorrow, we're talking about a lot of rain in a short amount of time. not expecting that reeks or the rivers to overflow their banks, at least for the most part, going to see some rapid rise. but you'll see some backups in some of the drainage areas. maybe you do have some leaves are some branches clock up some of the drains there. you could see some raw rapid raises and also the potential for some flooding a long way to go. you see that stream of moisture headed well off the coast line that goes all the way down the hawaiian islands. that means that a lot of subtropic

spreading across the rest of the bay area. there have been little gaps here and there. when one of those gaps takes hold, another wave of rain moves in. this is the trend through the rest of tonight, intermittent off and on light to moderate rain showers, locally heavier downpours not lasting long enough to lead to any flooding potential. here's one of the gaps now over san francisco about to be replaced by another wave of rain moving in from the west. let's look at futurecast as we head through 6:00 tomorrow. it shows the rain spreading back out and becoming heavier during the late night and early morning hours on saturday. some of the heaviest rain will move through around midmorning saturday and then we get into more of an off-and-on shower pattern for most of the bay area with the rain being more persistent in the north bay. how much rain have we added up so far? amounts have been modest to this point. petaluma had almost 1 inch of rainfall to this point, but otherwise less than a half inch and barely more than a trace in

here at east bay regional parks. crews say they're preparing for the storms as well, and staff here are urging people who visit the parks during or after this weather to be cautious and to pay attention to any warnings or signs that are up. lots of reasons for agencies to watch this atmospheric river closely, and that can really make a dent in our wer supply. right now we're at the zone seven water agency site in livermore. and as you can see, there is still plenty of sand left for folks who want to come and grab sandbags here. and if you don't live in livermore, check with your municipality. many of them are offering free sandbags for residents. we were able to confirm that oakland, san leandro and danville are among those. live in livermore. alyssa goard, nbc, bay area news. alyssa. thank you. yeah, those sandbags can be very helpful. we're also getting snow. look at this in the sierra. this is eastbound 80. it's going to be slow getting to where you want to go, whether you're going to tahoe or out to reno. chp say

additional inch in the south bay community.enting on what you're expecting today. the atmospheric river you can see it setting up across the west coast of the united states. northern california, definitely getting in on the bulk of the action because that's where the nose and the fire hose is currently located. but that will be heading down south toward our neck of the woods throughout this afternoon. but look at what it does so, it really dissipates here in san francisco and further south, we'll be lucky to pick up a half of an inch throughout today and into tomorrow. the heaviest of the moisture well off to our north and across our north bay communities where the nose of that moisture will be located. but, by monday and into tuesday. that's more expecting the bulk of the moisture to move across the bay area. that's where we'll be seeing those heavier downpours. again not arriving though until monday afternoon and evening and overnight and into early tuesday morning. that's where we'll be seeing the heaviest of activities. esp

of the bay area.re we could be seeing quite a lot of rain. especially across those highest elevations. today and into tomorrow. again an additional inch and a half on top of the inch that has already fallen across santa rosa, san rafael. that's going to be bringing the totals to 2-inches across the weekend. san jose you will be around a quarter of an inch and above a half of an inch. an staying pretty quiet throughout the day sunday. maybe across our far north bay communities. it's not until monday afternoon and evening that the nose of the atmospheric river. the nose of that moisture and fire hose begin to push further south. look at this monday evening and into early tuesday morning. widespread rainfall. we could be potentially seeing upwards of two inches for places like san jose, upwards of four to six inches in the highest elevations of the santa cruz mountains and up across our north bay communities. a lot of rain is under way. this isn't likely going to arrive until monday afternoon and evening

up in the local reservoirs that supply water to the south bay. those local reservoirs are at 72% of average for this time of year. >> seeing these storms coming is good news for us. hopefully they'll fill up our local reservoirs as well, but we are below average for this time of year. >> locally, valley water says the community has done a good job maintaining conservation habits developed during the height of the statewide drought. >> you don't have to wait to a drought to make changes. it's a good idea to make those changes now because we know a drought is coming and you might as well be saving water and saving money now. >> while officials say water management will be key to keeping reservoirs full, they're still holding on to high hopes for the current and future storms. >> so we'll definitely need more storms throughout the next several months to make up for the very dry january. >> the next snow survey is tentatively scheduled for february 28th in the south bay. zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> and don't forget, you can track the rain throug

but general flooding around the bay area's. that means if you're driving around, watch out for some of those underpasses, you can see ponding out there on the roadways. and of course, some of the drainage areas where you may get some of the leaves and maybe branches stuck in the drain. you'll watch some minor flooding in those locations. so watch out throughout the bay area as we've got a long way to go with this storm system. first about of the rain coming through right now. but you can see that long train of moisture just off the coastline. boy, you could draw a line all the way to the hawaiian islands with that system. that means we're tapping some tropical moisture and that warm air tend to hold more moisture. and when you get enough dynamics in the back side to help squeeze it out, get a whole lot of rain in a short amount of time. and that's where we're expecting to see right now. you see that rain kind of falling around most of the bay area right now will continue on and off throughout the night and really become steady

after that showers shift to the north bay. any flooding potential with this first peak of the atmospheric river will largely occur the first half of the day on saturday. let's look at how much rain we've added up so far. to this point in the atmospheric river it hasn't been a whole lot thus far, only a few hundredths of an inch in san jose and dublin, over 0.2-inch for san francisco and petaluma, over 0.8-inch of rain already. there's definitely more on the way. mentioned this is a double-peaked atmospheric river. if this first peak was a stand alone atmospheric river, it would rank as an ar2 on our 1 to 5 scale. the second one is headed our way monday night into tuesday would rank an ar1, but both add up to an impact of an ar3, usually brings a balance of beneficial rainfall, but the hazards of localized flooding. that's something we'll have to watch as that next peak rolls inner next week. some localized flooding is possible tonight and tomorrow, no reports yet. we'll take a look farther with futurecast coming up in the full

showers around the north bay. dropping south through the bay area. notice the trend.y north bay event, and we're likely to see this carry into the sunday forecast. notice how these rain chances are mostly bottled up north of san francisco, up towards mendocino county, sonoma county almost nonstop, which is the reason why the rain totals from north to south. you're going to see that big gradient from another 2 to 4in of rain on the coastal mountains and inland mountains there, up towards lake county and sonoma county, and nearly nothing again down towards san jose. so the rain chances will have tomorrow. taking a mostly san francisco northward focus, we'll see highs in the same range we had today, mostly upper 50s around the north bay and low to mid 60s from san jose southward. now notice how that atmospheric river gets on the move as we get into monday and tuesday, the frontal boundary itself will start to move through for areas south of san francisco. that's likely to be the heaviest rain of the week on into tuesday. then the colder air starts to arrive as more storm

we start that breaking news out of the east bay. the shelter-in-place order has been lifted for residents across martinez pacheco, clyde and the surrounding areas. it was originally issued in response to the fire at the martinez refining company. >> that fire broke out at the facility just before 2 this afternoon. crews say flames are winding down this evening, but 6 people were injured at the refinery video shows smoke bellowing from the refinery on pacheco boulevard. and crews say the black smoke is the result of a harmful gas called hydrocarbon. that has come busting from the flare. we've got team coverage tonight on this story. kron four's lindsey ford has reaction. but first, kron 4 shock moment is live in martinez tonight with the very latest jack. >> yeah, that's right, stephanie. after more than 8 hours that shelter-in-place order is finally lifted, meaning people can finally leave their homes if they choose to do so. but while this fire dies down, we still have some injuries to report. like you said, 6 people were injured.

now over in the east bay. so it really is bay area wide. even the south bay catching on in some of these showers. and there's the snow slick tahoe. look at this. the snow rolling right up the sierra right now. and this is all part of that atmospheric river setup that we've been talking about. you can see the stream of moisture as it rolls back here. and as i zoom out, even farther take you all the way back to hawaii and you see where that plume of moisture, by the way, causing a lot of problems there as well goes all the way from hawaii says sometimes you hear that's called an atmospheric river. sometimes you hear it called the pineapple express because of that journey that moisture takes. i'll be back in just a bit. we're going to track it for you hour by hour and get you into the weekend. >> all right. thank you. kylen our team coverage of this atmospheric river continues. now we want to go to san francisco where the city's public works. department has been getting ready for all the rain. yep. we had a warning. crawford's gayle ong joins

santa cruz mountains, east bay hills. totals again tomorrow likely to be up here in sonoma county, lake county and northwestern napa county. you see those areas in red? a lot less again as you head into san jose and morgan hill. so morning temperatures will be mild mid to upper 50s to start the day and high temperatures tomorrow, upper 50s to low 60s, san francisco to oakland, low to mid 60s around san jose southward. now notice the rain projection monday into tuesday. a lot different looking here, as you can see on the rain estimates 1 monday night to tuesday time frame as this frontal boundary passes through and in behind it colder air. look at all the snow in the sierra. we have snow levels close to 7 to 8000ft this weekend. by thursday, as low as 4000ft, which means the higher peaks around the bay area could get a dusting of snow as we pass the middle part of next week. so those rain chances ongoing. this is what the seven day should look like in february. daily rain chances. but boy, that rain will come down pretty h

right through the central bay at this time and over towards the south bay as well.e will have rounds and rounds coming our way with a colder storm coming in early next week. let's take a look at some of the rainfall amounts from earlier today. you can see petaluma already reporting almost three quarters of an inch. then you get into the central and south bay and it drops off pretty dramatically. concord reporting just for 107 inch. san francisco almost 2/10. and oakland a little bit more than a 10th. the futurecast on this notice it's green and blue. so for the most part it's been generally light rain. and that's what we do expect. tomorrow morning we start out with the light rain and then pockets of moderate rain expected to move through during the afternoon. we're now into saturday night and we get a little bit of a break. but sunday the scattered showers are back and going to continue into the afternoon. saturday right now, looks like it's going to be a wetter day than sunday. sunday will be hit or miss, off and on and will continue over the sierra as well with t

so even as we get into sunday, even things will taper off a little bit, the south bay, the north bayecomes a focus and that heavier rainfall continues. then everybody gets back into that. rain is a mix of sweeping turn and makes way across the rest of the area late monday into tuesday. and behind that cold system kind of rolls on bring more showers continuing on and off more snow. flood watches posted across the entire bay area. not expecting the major creeks ohe ivers around bay area to overflow, but certainly some minor flooding is a real possibility, some mudslides yet we can see those as well. look at the rain amounts in the forecast models through sunday. we're talking 2, 3, and a half inches of rain across parts of bay area. now the urban areas, many more than that across on the mountain peaks. then you bring that next storm system to the middle of next week. then we started talking 3, 5, inches of rain on me. some incredible amounts of rainfall during that period. gusty winds are gonna go along with that. we could be looking at some very gusty winds starting on sunday into mon

it is certainly lighter north bay. we'll show you where it is right now around sausalito, tiburon, paradise drive, san francisco. you're getting a little bit of an ease up for now. 40s and 50s right now. temperatures today got up only into the 40s and 50s. here are the concerns for the weekend. minor flooding on the creeks and streams, and certainly on the roadways. high likelihood of this happening, especially when the heavier rain comes in trees going down. it's a potential, we'll call it moderate power outages and mudslides a low likelihood. it is certainly a slick golden gate bridge tonight. light to moderate rain a level two storm for saturday. you get that soaking and windy weather. and then sunday into next week this active pattern is going to continue. so it's a level one for tonight a light system rain continues slippery roadways. and it is going to continue to remain windy in the hills. we bump this storm to a level two on our exclusive storm impact scale here. atmospheric river arrives. heavier rain comes wi
