water flooding going to be an issue all around the bay area. lawrence, an evacuation warning is in place for those living near the russian river in sonoma county. it's the area you see shaded in yellow. the map on your screen shows. >> the area healdsburg all the way to jenner down river road in sonoma county of sonoma county. sheriff says the river is expected to peak at 33 feet tonight and into the early hours of tomorrow morning. water level is expected to drop sometime tomorrow afternoon, but it will rise even higher sunday night. anyone who lives below the 40 foot flood level is asked right now to be prepared to leave at a moment's notice. have your go bags with your essential medicines and documents ready to go. this wild weather is causing road closures. it's been doing damage to cars and causing flight delays. justine waldman is live in our newsroom tonight. as we mentioned, she has that part of the story just there are so many issues out there today. and we just got this new. >> information into the kron, 4 news room. there is a shelter

>> the overnight storm cut power to about 100,000 customers in the bay area. all the storms we have had combined with the strong winds toppled power lines. south bay, one of the hardest hit areas, more than half of those power outages in the south bay. let's bring our damien trujillo, got a first look at how pg&e response to these emergencies. what did the utility company tell you? >> reporter: they call it unprecedented, their response to the series of storms here since new year's. we are near willow glen, this is a chain reaction here. one of the main transmission lines came down and it brought several other polls with it. so there are crews here trying to restore power here, it will take them a while, this is quite a task for the hundreds of people without power here on lincoln avenue just north of the willow glen area. in these shots, we have seen a lot of these workers, these are contracted workers from pg&e because they had to bring in people from all across the country, basically. they are here from nine different states including southern california and

gusty winds popping up all around the bay area. continuing the napa valley. those winds gusting nearly 20 miles an hour. get a crock of 39 in hercules. how about 41 el sobrante? 44 mile an hour gusts. you get the east bay. 44 mile an hour gusts in clayton. 39. so a lot of these gusts are happening down in the urban areas. so that's going to cause issues with some of the trees coming down in many places where we throughout the evening hours and the night tonight, the south bay gusting to 36 now in cupertino, los altos hills. 44 mile an hour gust over the santa cruz mountains. you're seeing some 30 40 mile an hour gusts. half moon bay just had a 45 my an hour look at that in the civic up 60 mile an hour gusts there along the coastline. there in the valley. so, yeah, it is just kind of ripping all around the bay area. and that's the concern with this deep area of low pressure. it's just going to get intense throughout the night tonight and into tomorrow morning. then it looks like it will begin to back off. right now. we're seeing tremendous amount of water comin

the bay area. from the north bay down to monterey county, rivers are already overflowing and running dangerously fast. nbc bay area is tracking when some of the rivers are expected to go beyond the flood stage. really concerning, cynthia. >> it is. another weekend on storm, river and creek watch here in the newsroom as we kick off a series of atmospheric rivers arriving in the bay area, now through monday. i'm keeping track of the russian river in guerneville and the salinas river in monterey county this morning. monterey county is under a flood warning until further notice. we're looking at new video from overnight of the salinas river. there was no roadway flooding when this was filmed, but the water is still very active and crews are handling the situation as best they can on the roads. but take a look at what we captured from nbc bay area's sky ranger yesterday. broken levies, water everywhere along highway 68 and the farms there. now, data from the salinas river tells us the river saw minor flo

two here in the bay area. i'm curious, as we grow weary and frankly exasperated about hearing about so much gun violence, is there any idea of where meshes stand on gun control or gun reform? and ultimately, who has the power to even make that happen? >> so it's interesting. that grim statistic that you talked about, i took it a step further today in the show. there have been more mass shootings than days of the year so far. we have had 29 days this calendar year. i think the number is 44 mass shootings in the database. four straight calendar years now, where we have had more mass shootings than days of the year. so you asked, where does the power lie? i think this is where there is an open question. could congress do more? they could. are they so politically polarized they won't? yes. so then you end up in the judiciary, and the judiciary has created limits and has tied the hands of many legislatures across the country from doing more. and ultimately, you have to have a -- you're going to have to have federal

still, the calls for justice for tyre nichols are echoing across the country and here in the bay area. demonstrators rallied and marched through the streets of san francisco. "today in the bay's" gia vang continues our coverage. >> down market street this group of protesters is saying no more killer cops. >> cops do not have the authority to kill people like this. we're demanding a mass movement be made, convict these kill e. >> reporter: givon washington is talking about the five memphis police officers now charged in the beating death of 29-year-old tyre nichols during a traffic stop. the crowd gathered at powell and market streets in san francisco just an hour after the police body cam footage was released. washington can't bring himself to watch it, knowing the details is hard enough. >> once they get inside of the police car started smoking and joking around while he's laying there calling for his -- calling for his mom. >> reporter: the officers were fired last week facing second degree murder charges. they are all black. >> that's even more of an indictment of this system. >> r

clearing the drains on both sides of the highway that reopened at about 6:00. >> outside of the bay area the santa barbara area seems to be getting the worst of the storm. people are trying to cross the street with rushing water, basically the entire town under an evacuation order tonight with some areas ordered to shelter in place. more than 34 million californians were under a flood watch at some point today. that's about 90% of the state's population. >>> because of that tonight, president biden declared an emergency in california. chief meteorologist paul heggen is tracking that hour-by-hour updates. we understand we might see some lightning tonight. >> yes. the next wave of rain is unfortunately only a few hours away. we need a days long break from the rain, but we have to settle for what we're getting, which is a few more hours from now. turning on the lightning map, a picture of the clouds from space and getting the lightning data which lights up in the colors indicating cloud-to-ocean lightning strikes which will become cloud-to-ground lightning once this band of heavy rain moves

let's go outside across the bay area our live cameras. you can see pretty wet in san rafael in the north bay. san francisco, san jose, palo alto a bit drier this hour. today we're learning of a new death tied to our recent storms. crews found a car submerged in floodwaters in forestville northwest of santa rosa. they also found a woman in the car who was dead. she's been identified as a 43-year-old from ukiah. another area of flood concern this hour, our crews got this video showing crews monitoring the river's level in watsonville. it's not just the rain and flooding, strong winds are blowing through with this storm. wow, look at fremont this afternoon. you can see the american flag blowing pretty good. this is what it looked like at levi's stadium when a good downpour came in. the niners are getting ready for their playoff game saturday where rain and wind are expected to be a factor when the niners host the seahawks. let's bring in our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. what is it looking like now this hour? >>> i think the worst has mov

much of the bay area got another serious soaking overnight like here in the north bay, the storm bringing thunder, lightning and chaos to the region. reporter cornell barnard joins us live in forestville and shows as with every new round of rain comes another round of storm damage. reporter: so much and more to come. tonight floodwaters have overtaken places like waller road here in forestville. it is closed to traffic. firefighters say the forecast for the russian river is improving by the hour, but some residents have already been flooded out by the overnight storm. >> we have two or feet of water in the garage. inside grace's apartment in forestville after the storm saturday night. grace says it happened so fast. >> i can see there is water rushing down the hillside so we were a little concerned. 10 minutes later, i come back out there is a foot of water outside. cornell: grace said she grabbed what she could and moved to higher ground, but sadly, she lost most of her belongings. >> i was worried about my clothes. i realized as it got higher, in a matter of minutes, he realized they ne

. >>> especially for much of the bay area. as we look at where the next storm is coming in right now, it is just off the coast, and we are going to see this next storm system having a big impact in time for the weekend. but out ahead of that, we are seeing scattered showers moving through parts of the north bay. we've seen it's really not letting up there and there will still be that chance we could see wet weather in san francisco on northward while other areas get some times of sunshine today so really different weather from one participate of the bay area to the next. even at 4:30 it's raining heavily in santa rosa but then you head down to san francisco and it's like, okay, it's cloudy. we are going to continue to see the rain in the north bay as we go into this evening early tomorrow but then the rest of the bay area starts to see that activity spreading in as we go into late morning into the afternoon. we are going to see the brunt of the next storm hitting us late tomorrow night with heavier downpours, the potential of

>> we are going to get hit hard tomorrow. 1 to 2 inches for the greater bay area. north bay, potentially 2 plus inches with that. >> flood concerns? >> it's with us again tomorrow. flood watch for the entire bay area. that is basically stay on alert. the new thing we're seeing here is the coastal and bay areas could have flood issues near the coast, near the bay, during high tides. you want to watch out for that if you live near the coasts investor bay. street drains, they just can't keep up with all this water we've seen. i think tomorrow morning when that rain hits, we could see more of these issues crop up. the russian river, while it is going to 29 feet tomorrow, gets to 34 feet sunday. and the then after that we should begin to see that drop. >> you mentioned the street drains. today where i live on the peninsula, around 2:00, 3:00 p.m., it was raining so hard, i looked down my street and it was flowing like a river. thankfully everything was clear, but it brings a lot of anxiety for a lot of people. >> tomorrow morning it's going to be the same thng on repeat.

nbc bay area's kris sanchez is tracking conditions in the north bay, one of the places getting hit the hardest. and we want to hear from meteorologist kari hall, who has been tracking this weather. >> we've been seeing the rain widespread and steady for much of the bay area. we've seen at times pockets of heavier rain picking up and moving into parts of the north bay from marin county right across the richmond-san rafael bridge. for the east bay, it is widespread with a few areas where you see the darker green, the heavier rain that's moving through. and we're definitely seeing that now over the santa cruz mountains, reaching more saratoga and eventually making it toward san jose, with lighter showers for morgan hill to gilroy. so we are still looking at waves of rain coming in, all of this moisture pushing across the bay area, and at times it does pick up quite a bit as it taps into that deep tropical moisture. another atmospheric river moving in with bay area rain and sierra snow that's really reducing the visibility in those areas. all of this drawn in by the center of this storm, t

arts of the bay area getting a lightning show of sorts. check out the moment a strike was caught on camera . we will show you another angle from a distance and watch the left side of the screen as the lightning hits over the top of the tower, shrouded in clouds. there has also been plenty of help. it's coming down hard in japan town. a lot of it collecting on the hoods of cars. this was on the west side of the city. people all over the bay area taking to social media to share their videos with us. we show them to you read strong storm cells that created a lot of work for crews in san francisco. this tree fell onto a bus on sutter and stockton just this afternoon. we are told at least one person was hurt but is okay , thankfully. crews have shut down part of the area well working to clear the tree. we are also seeing trees falling on cars in parts of the city. a mother and daughter had to be rescued after this tree snapped a live powerline onto their car. near 19th and fulton. and a tree crushed this car near the hamilton rec center in the

as we get a closer look pretty much all of the bay area, for the north bay, light showers moving through. the intensity of that picks up as you head down to south san francisco, over toward the belmont area as well, parts of the santa cruz mountains getting in on some heavy rain. as far as what we had yesterday and what's ahead as the next storm system comes in, it's going to kind of start to lift to the north and the north bay will be the focus as we see all of this moisture plume coming into the bay area so more flooding will be possible. we'll be tracking that coming up in a few minutes. mike, you are also seeing fewer incidents on the roads right now. >> that's right. the rain continues but fewer incidents on the chp blotter a dozen in the golden gate jurisdiction and most are related to earlier flood logs. the radar, this is kari's radar. we share the same system, the same technology, and a lot more rain is coming in. across highway 192, 84 may get more rain. we're showing still the system continues to have reports of wires down and some number of signals out through the campbell ar

the san francisco bay area ferry has suspended harbor bay and south san francisco route. we are live . heavy downpour, gusty winds. a lot of damage like this. downed trees and power lines all over here. coming up >>> we want to take you to the san mateo county coast where the touring terrain is not the only problem tonight. >> we are joined live from half moon bay to see what the wind has done. you are in the thick of it right now. >> reporter: the rent has been touring nonstop since 4:00 here in half moon bay. as you mentioned, it's not just the rain but the gusty wind causing raindrops to go sideways. as a result, we are seeing a lot of downed trees and power lines in the area. i want to show you some video, as well of this cypress tree that toppled over a few hours ago. the base of this tree is about 12 feet in diameter. it's about 50 to 60 feet tall. this tree is surrounded by apartments and townhomes. luckily, it landed in the courtyard. nobody was hurt. at the nearby town of moss beach, a tree limb snapped and landed on a power line. this happened around 3:00 on cal

so we remain under a flood watch through monday as the storm system pushes on the bay area. flood advisory in the north bay that lingers on through into this mid-morning as the heavier pockets of rain do douse. those rivers rising very fast, of course. we could expect some flooding, some possible creeks and streams in localized neighborhoods. those high rain rates, like i've been saying this morning. please be careful of that. we're going to take it on into the russian river at guerneville. of course river forecasts do change as the storm comes on through, but right now at this hour, we're going to see that this river will start to crest sunday morning right here at just over 33 feet. flood stage there is 32. so that's what's expected. tomorrow morning those things could change. hour-by-hour outlook, let's help you plan your day. let's stay inside and be careful from all of this rain. by around the next hour or, so we're still seeing some heavy pockets here around santa rosa, napa, san francisco, down the peninsula and down into san jose as well. as we go into the afternoon,

we continue to monitor the damage across the bay area from this weekend's storms, the warning issued by the golden gate national recreation area for anyone thinking about heading to been freed was back in new york and federal court today to be arraigned. the former ceo of the collapsed crypto exchange pleaded not guilty to fraud, money laundering and other charges. prosecutors say they don't know exactly how much money was misused, but are estimating that at least $8 billion from investors was funneled to his private hedge fund and misappropriated. blankman freed was released from jail about two weeks ago on a $250 million bond. he was ordered to stay at his parents' home in palo alto. his trial is tentatively set to start in october. damage assessments are still coming in from the latest earthquake that rattled humboldt county. the magnitude 5.4 aftershock struck on new year's day, about nine miles southeast of rio dealt it followed a stronger quake in that same area nearly two weeks before which killed two people in shook several homes off their foundations. inspectors yesterday red

our team is tracking the power storm taking aim at the bay area. ahead on "today in the bay," meteorologist kari hall has a look at your forecast. >>> we'll have a look at your morning commute as youead out th he >>> welcome back. you're watching "today in the bay." the first sierra snow survey confirming what centers have been saying all along about the recent snowfall. the snowpack right now 177% of normal for this time of year. here is a look at yesterday's measurements near highway 50. the snowpack there measured about 55 inches adding up to the best start in 40 years. it will still take months of above average rainfall and snowfall for california to emerge from the drought. >> that's okay. we'll take what we can get. >>> bay area reservoirs sitting at higher levels than they have in a long time. uvas reservoir more than 100%. last year there were times it was less than halfful. >> it's important to see the reservoirs across the state fill up from the rainstorms and the snowpack is very important for us because all of that run-off in the spring

. >> especially for much of the bay area. we're watching the north bay for the potential of more scattered showers. i want to show you the wide view of the next storm coming our way. it looks very similar to what we just had but the intensity of the storm is not as strong but still tapping into subtropical moisture enhancing that rainfall. and we're still seeing off and on showers. notice where they are. it's on san francisco northward, and we're seeing the spotty showers picking up right now but it's not as much of an impact as what we've seen recently. there will at any point be pop-up showers in the areas, but notice that even as we go into late morning into the afternoon spots like livermore, san jose are going to even see some sunshine while you have much different weather in the north bay from ukiah to santa rosa, to clear lake. we'll see that rain picking up again this evening, and then it spreads into the rest of the bay area with some off-and-on showers through tomorrow morning and then becoming more widespread with t

we have a lot of crashes, spinouts scattered throughout the bay area. we have closures, more than last week. highway 37 has been closed yesterday because of all the flooding between atherton and 101. it is your cutover between 37 and 101 to get past the closure and folks are familiar with that but we haven't had it for a while. we did have this last week and then it cleared, niles cappion. kari talked about the creek in the area coming up to flooding stage and because of the rain through the area, the rain soaked soil, this happened over the weekend after it opened for a couple of days. that's going on for 84. to the dublin interchange. a number of spinouts and some conditions that are really tough. west 580 is slowing. lighter volume of traffic but the conditions, may be scattered spinouts on the shoulder. just use caution through the area. remember today is a holiday. we have an alternate schedule. routes 30 and 35 will be altered because of the parade route between 10:00 and 11:30 this morning. keep that in mind. back to you. >> thanks, mike. >>> wel

storm coming in on wednesday in just a few minutes. >> thank you. >>> thousands of families in the bay area woke up without electricity this morning. according to pg&e's outage map, more than 3,700 customers do not have power at this minute. most are in east bay, alameda, contra costa, san francisco county as well. tens of thousands in the dark statewide. >> some of the storm damage will leave oakland zoo closed for at least two weeks. you can see this ten-foot gap that opened up formed during the worst of the storm on the road that leads up to the zoo's entrance. this was caused by a culvert that collapsed, leading to rapid erosion. you can see it here. well, this morning zoo leaders are still holding their breath of what comes next. >> we've got another atmospheric river event coming through this week, we have to let that rain get through us and see where we land. >> this all comes at a bad time for the zoo, which has been holding its annual holiday glofari event. anyone with tickets will be able to receive a full respond. the storm did not cause any damage to the zoo enclosures or exhibi

this is what is to come, that strong narrow cold front that will be pushing through the bay area. winds already quite gusty. a look at our storm reports up and down the north bank into the south -- north bay to the south bay. we are just getting into it now. you can see the circulation offshore, a very strong area of low pressure. we have a hurricane force air force craft that will go through and check the pressure of this storm. when they get so strong, they do have aircraft that go in and check how intense it is. that is what will happen from noaa. the winds are from 2 20 to 38 miles per hour across the area. in the next hour and a half, the north bay getting slammed with heavy rainfall. anywhere from a half inch to an inch an hour in the reds. as we look through the 6:30, 8:00 timeframe, heavier rain moves through. 10:00, still heavy rain in the east and south bay. thursday morning commute, you can see those downpours, possibility of thunderstorms with us. by 11:30 on thursday, still the atmosphere is ripe for downpours, possibly hail. we get a break through the afternoon on thu
