water flooding going to be an issue all around the bay area. lawrence, an evacuation warning is in place for those living near the russian river in sonoma county. it's the area you see shaded in yellow. the map on your screen shows. >> the area healdsburg all the way to jenner down river road in sonoma county of sonoma county. sheriff says the river is expected to peak at 33 feet tonight and into the early hours of tomorrow morning. water level is expected to drop sometime tomorrow afternoon, but it will rise even higher sunday night. anyone who lives below the 40 foot flood level is asked right now to be prepared to leave at a moment's notice. have your go bags with your essential medicines and documents ready to go. this wild weather is causing road closures. it's been doing damage to cars and causing flight delays. justine waldman is live in our newsroom tonight. as we mentioned, she has that part of the story just there are so many issues out there today. and we just got this new. >> information into the kron, 4 news room. there is a shelter

nbc bay area's kris sanchez is tracking conditions in the north bay, one of the places getting hit the hardest. and we want to hear from meteorologist kari hall, who has been tracking this weather. >> we've been seeing the rain widespread and steady for much of the bay area. we've seen at times pockets of heavier rain picking up and moving into parts of the north bay from marin county right across the richmond-san rafael bridge. for the east bay, it is widespread with a few areas where you see the darker green, the heavier rain that's moving through. and we're definitely seeing that now over the santa cruz mountains, reaching more saratoga and eventually making it toward san jose, with lighter showers for morgan hill to gilroy. so we are still looking at waves of rain coming in, all of this moisture pushing across the bay area, and at times it does pick up quite a bit as it taps into that deep tropical moisture. another atmospheric river moving in with bay area rain and sierra snow that's really reducing the visibility in those areas. all of this drawn in by the center of this storm, t

>> the overnight storm cut power to about 100,000 customers in the bay area. all the storms we have had combined with the strong winds toppled power lines. south bay, one of the hardest hit areas, more than half of those power outages in the south bay. let's bring our damien trujillo, got a first look at how pg&e response to these emergencies. what did the utility company tell you? >> reporter: they call it unprecedented, their response to the series of storms here since new year's. we are near willow glen, this is a chain reaction here. one of the main transmission lines came down and it brought several other polls with it. so there are crews here trying to restore power here, it will take them a while, this is quite a task for the hundreds of people without power here on lincoln avenue just north of the willow glen area. in these shots, we have seen a lot of these workers, these are contracted workers from pg&e because they had to bring in people from all across the country, basically. they are here from nine different states including southern california and

"today in the bay's" bob redell in danville. that areas had flooding. >> reporter: we're along el capitan drive in danville in the east bay. you probably can't see but the roads here are still muddy. the sidewalks have a couple inches of mud and grime from this weekend's storm. this is a neighborhood that did flood, and you can see if you look at that home there in the background there's a lot of homes doing what these people did. they have sandbags in front of their garage, in front of the entryways because they're anticipating what could happen today. i know they don't want this to happen but they are trying to be prepared because of what they witnessed this past saturday. further north in contra costa county, the fire protection district, they're prepared, too, they tell us. they have boats ready for possible swift water rescues after the flooding they witnessed and con fire says it's almost a given this storm will threaten lives. >> our residents can prepare now to avoid those risks, it will help all of us to focus on this life-threate

widespread thunderstorms across the entire bay area. we see the chance for a few scattered showers and a thunderstorm over the rest of the evening. this makes it look much more impressive than it's going to be. nothing to be concerned about. however , by early tomorrow morning, before the sun comes up we will track the rain approaching the coast , and it's likely to move and as we approach the peak of rush-hour once again. widespread rain is likely across the bay area for much of wednesday. most of us will have light to moderate rain. north of the golden gate, the rain will be heavier. specific relations coming up in just a few minutes. whatever we get will be on top of the rain we picked up in the last 24 hours. over three inches of rain. an inch of rain from downtown san francisco and danville with the storm clusters moving through around lunchtime. only three quarters of an inch . the santa cruz mountains did not overachieve on rainfall. half an inch in santa rosa. 4/10 of an inch in san jose. the system delivered on gusty wind. abou

but it is going to be mess all around the bay area. ourse, the rainfall is going to be something to. we're going to see one to 2 inches common in many of the urban areas. but over the mountain tops those rainfall amounts of 3 to 6 inches. i think the santa cruz mountains, this the type of event you get that southerly flow of winds into the santa cruz mountains and you get what's called or graphic lift is that air lifts over the tops of the mountains. it will squeeze out a whole lot of rain. i think there we're talking maybe 6, maybe 10 inches of rain. sandler roads runs a river. look, a socal creek. those could be in play as we head toward tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow night with that heavy rainfall moving in overhead. guys, back to you. thank you, lawrence. some people in palo alto had to evacuate during the last storm because of flooding. >> kron four's rob nesbitt talk to people who are hoping to avoid more damage to their homes. >> this is one of 3 locations where residents can fill their own sandbags in palo alto has been so busy

here is our flood warning and flood advisory, the area in red is the area covered by the flood warning. that is all of the north bay. san mateo county is in the green, covered by the flood advisory. there may well be some flooding in those areas as well. i would go to our highest concerns about the storm impact. we have very high concerns about these impacts. flooding our roads, stream and creek flooding, mudslides, rock slides, very high concerns about those impacts, power outages, downed trees and high concerns about river flooding. >> we atmospheric river was going to hit us, it would cause flooding right away. that is what we are seeing right now. when the heavy rain moved offshore, that is a huge reason why we labeled the storm a level five and the severe storm the highest ranking on the storm impact scale. the soil is saturated right now. ashe heavytaedoo the issue smaie evening. they won't calm down until early tomorrow morning. winds in our hills are strong as well. we had wind gusts exceed 80 miles per hour. that is the threat we are under right now. these strong winds are with us as this atmospheric river

>> we are going to get hit hard tomorrow. 1 to 2 inches for the greater bay area. north bay, potentially 2 plus inches with that. >> flood concerns? >> it's with us again tomorrow. flood watch for the entire bay area. that is basically stay on alert. the new thing we're seeing here is the coastal and bay areas could have flood issues near the coast, near the bay, during high tides. you want to watch out for that if you live near the coasts investor bay. street drains, they just can't keep up with all this water we've seen. i think tomorrow morning when that rain hits, we could see more of these issues crop up. the russian river, while it is going to 29 feet tomorrow, gets to 34 feet sunday. and the then after that we should begin to see that drop. >> you mentioned the street drains. today where i live on the peninsula, around 2:00, 3:00 p.m., it was raining so hard, i looked down my street and it was flowing like a river. thankfully everything was clear, but it brings a lot of anxiety for a lot of people. >> tomorrow morning it's going to be the same thng on repeat.

across the bay area, this is for saturday. a quarter to about one inch for most of us except for guerneville. they're going to be two-plus inches. we add on sunday's totals and overall for this storm system, we're looking for anywhere from one to three inches on average. those bull's-eyes right up towards the north bay and the santa cruz mountains except for guerneville. notice that. it's in that gray color. that's going to be four-plus inches. i have those flood details here coming up momentarily. but i also wanted to let you know with this weekend's storm, winds are going to be gusty as well. 20 to 50 miles per hour on and off saturday through sunday. so this may bring down more trees as well. just something we're going to have to watch out for with each and every one of these storms. when it comes to the russian river here in guerneville, we get constant updates on this. it's always giving us that latest data, and we're at 26 feet tomorrow, below flood stage. but we still think it will go up to 35.8 feet late sunday and mon

greater bay area good for 1 to 2 inches. a bulls eye in the santa cruz mountains of 2 to 3. also some of the north bay mountains there into the 2 to 3-inch range. wind gusts will be with us and look strong tomorrow morning. 50 plus miles per hour in the magenta color through our mountains across the bay area. lower elevations 20 to 40. from 6 through right here about 9:00 in the morning we'll see the strongest winds. it would calm down a little through the afternoon but on and off gusts with us. if you're heading out to the 49ers game a little side jog here. temperatures will be in the 50s. scattered rain and an isolated thunderstorm chance so make sure to bring the poncho. on the seven-day forecast in san francisco we get a spotty thunderstorm chance on sunday. monday is that 11th storm. a quarter to a half inch. and then what we've all been waiting for some dry weather next tuesday and wednesday's forecast will feel real good. next thursday just a few showers. next friday, i'm calling it sunniest weather we will have seen in four weeks. coming our way. i know we're all rejo

scattered power outages across the bay area tonight. this map shows the locations with red areas indicating the largest impact. one trouble spot is in the area of daly city. the peninsula has the most customers without power with more than 41,000 affected. another big outage in berkeley including cal's campus. pg&e says 95,000 customers in the bay area are without power because of the storm. ama: heavy wayne can bring problems to your home or business including power outages. michael finney has advice on what to do to resolve the issue at a quicker pace. reporter: why do you do if your power goes out? pg&e says you should call to report the outage because that can help them locate the problem and get it resolved. the number to call is one 800 743 5000. pg&e says it has 1300 workers ready to handle power outages. >> we do encourage customers if they have any questions regarding power outages or if they see damaged equipment, don't hesitate. give us a call. safety is our number one priority. we want to ensure that our customers are safe an

the flood watches have now become flood warnings across almost the entire bay area. now watching that very closely. now, that means flooding is occurring already in those areas or is imminent. so we're looking at a widespread flooding event for tonight that continue until 10:30pm, tonight. but the main rivers still going to be an issue. i think as we head throughout the night tonight and tomorrow, flood warnings going up there near guerneville. expecting that to crest tonight. right? just above the flood stage as we head ia toward tomorrow morning as well. now the winds also an extreme event. you can see some of those gusts out there. 45 at near beach. you've got the richmond district looking at some winds gusting to 39 miles an hour. 38 in daly city and along the coastline, 50 mile an hour gust in the pacific up for the south. you've got 52 in half moon bay get even inside the bay where usually don't see those winds that strong. we've got some 30, some 40 mile an hour gusts all the way down into san jose in the east bay to this is likely to bring down numerous trees.

the oranges and red across most of the bay area. heaviest rain at this moment is falling. itting other areas as the night goes on. this storm is a level five with -- a severe storm. worst impacts will be felt between now and then :00 p.m.. it will still be a severe storm after at :00. dangerous flooding is all over the bay area. a flood warning covers all of the bay area counties. you can imagine how intense the storm is paired here is a little bit of forecast and omission. we don't see the reds and oranges leaving the area until after midnight when we get a little bit of weakening. that will not be the end of it. there is a live view from emeryville. heavy rain and powerful wind gusts will be with us through the night into early tomorrow morning. widespread flooding is likely as is wind damage. the storm eases tomorrow but several days of rain will follow. >> lisa is here tracking with more information. >> the winds have in an issue. the reporters all out in the field. we had 49 miles per hour at sfo. now we are at 40 miles from santa rosa to novato. later into the east ba

much of the bay area got another serious soaking overnight like here in the north bay, the storm bringing thunder, lightning and chaos to the region. reporter cornell barnard joins us live in forestville and shows as with every new round of rain comes another round of storm damage. reporter: so much and more to come. tonight floodwaters have overtaken places like waller road here in forestville. it is closed to traffic. firefighters say the forecast for the russian river is improving by the hour, but some residents have already been flooded out by the overnight storm. >> we have two or feet of water in the garage. inside grace's apartment in forestville after the storm saturday night. grace says it happened so fast. >> i can see there is water rushing down the hillside so we were a little concerned. 10 minutes later, i come back out there is a foot of water outside. cornell: grace said she grabbed what she could and moved to higher ground, but sadly, she lost most of her belongings. >> i was worried about my clothes. i realized as it got higher, in a matter of minutes, he realized they ne

gusty winds popping up all around the bay area. continuing the napa valley. those winds gusting nearly 20 miles an hour. get a crock of 39 in hercules. how about 41 el sobrante? 44 mile an hour gusts. you get the east bay. 44 mile an hour gusts in clayton. 39. so a lot of these gusts are happening down in the urban areas. so that's going to cause issues with some of the trees coming down in many places where we throughout the evening hours and the night tonight, the south bay gusting to 36 now in cupertino, los altos hills. 44 mile an hour gust over the santa cruz mountains. you're seeing some 30 40 mile an hour gusts. half moon bay just had a 45 my an hour look at that in the civic up 60 mile an hour gusts there along the coastline. there in the valley. so, yeah, it is just kind of ripping all around the bay area. and that's the concern with this deep area of low pressure. it's just going to get intense throughout the night tonight and into tomorrow morning. then it looks like it will begin to back off. right now. we're seeing tremendous amount of water comin

we see widespread rain across the bay area, tracking it with storm ranger. yellows and the reds on the radar moved through the east bay and that's starting to lighten up just a little bit. take a look at this next wave just off the coast moving in to san francisco, san mateo county and starting to pick up again for marin county as well. heavier rain has been coming down for antioch and concord, getting lighter for the tri-valley and we have this light, steady rain in san jose. as we see it's not as heavy in some of our valleys like san jose. the storm has a lot to work its way through the bay area. we can see the storm here, winds will pick up. it has already started and continues through 10:00 tomorrow morning. we're going to see gusts at about 30 to 40 miles an hour as well as the coastline and the mountains. 70-mile-per-hour gusts will bring down trees, have impact to power and make it very difficult to drive. let's talk about when we start to see the winds picking up. at 10:00 we see 44-mile-per-hour winds at half moon bay. 47 in san jose. look at this ev

there are 80,000 customers without power in the bay area. you can see where the problem areas are on this map. the biggest outages seem to be in daly city in south san francisco and pacifica. gloria rodriguez is covering the impact of the storm had on the peninsula. gloria is one of those people without power and you have new flooding coming in. gloria: we do. we know there was damage in this area and they wind gusts reached up to 50 miles per hour. we want to show you some of the damage we found. we are at a valero gas station. you can see those aghast pumps were crushed, the awning fell on them. we are not hearing about any reports of injuries here. it doesn't show you how powerful those winds were -- does show you how powerful those winds were. heavy rain and flooding near el camino avenue and el camino real. pg&e crews were out yesterday and overnight. pg&e says it is 1300 workers to handle power outages. if you had a power ethics like i did, you might be wondering what to do. pg&e says you should call and report the outage to locate the
