ashley: peter barnes has the new beige book. >> it says economic activity continued to expand acrossors with nine of the 12 federal reserve bank districts indicating that their economies, their local economies were expanding at a moderate pace and two other districts reported modest growth while one district, kansas city, reported its economic activity held steady. that sounds similar to the language of the last beige book for the fed meeting back in december and that's when it voted to start tapering its quantitative easing bond purchases as you recall. this beige book covers the holiday shopping season, economic activity from late november to the end of december, for the fed meeting at the end of this month. the report says, quote, most districts reported that retail spending was up with activity described as, modestly to moderately higher and who sales on plan or up a bait compared with 2012 but the fed is watching the job market most closely and on jobs the report says, quote, 2/3 of the fed's districts noted increases in hiring. president obama is keeping his eye on the economy

. >> typically when you move into an apartment or condo, you are faced with four beige walls. this apartment was no different. don't be afraid to step away from there additional paint. i used a faux wallpaperer as a backdrop in the living room. it added texture and dimension and had a masculine touch that the space needed. i wanted to make sure that the faux wall papi wasn't the only focal point. i found this great chair that added a level of interest to the other side of the room. so the wallpaper wasn't the only focus. one of the best ways to address a situation with a small room is using smaller scale furent. i made sure that the bed that we found had a loe pro file. it sits lower in the space so it doesn't overwhelm everything. we found a very small end table and table lamp that fit perfectly against the side wall. the desk was just large enough for studies, and we utilized the wall space for additional storage and book storage. a convertible means there is no door separating the sleep space from the living space. in this case the client wanted a door for privacy purposes.

>>what would be your reaction to the fed's beige book that came out yesterday? >>i think it was fairly muted. i think the market had basically no reaction off of it. i think everything they had to say was priced in and i still think that the fed has a big problem and mountain to climb. >>we are awaiting earnings coming from a couple of big financial firms todaygoldman sachs and citigroup. what do you expect? >>based on the past we look at wells fargo, jp morgan, and bank of america. i expect them to blow the doors off and it would be hard to imagine they couldn't based on that they're getting free money and giving it back for the full in credit so i expect earnings to be very good. the real question i have is where is the growth coming from? although they're cutting costs and making money, they really aren't growing. >>and finally, what are you doing with this market? >>i've had this market range from 18,20 which we hit on monday to 1850 which we hit yesterday. i think we're going to stay in this range until we hear from the fed next week. >>thank you todd. >>ha

we have the beige book, a survey of 12 districts that they cover and what it told us was that there are some firming unexpectations of job growth in industries like construction and manufacturing. there are pockets of strength it seems in the u.s. economy at the moment based on that survey. but maybe it's not into the retailing space because we also have some news from jcpenney they are letting 2,000 staff going and they are shutting 33 stores. they hope this helps them save $65 million going forward. jcpenney not doing so well it seems in the retailing segment right now, tom. >> let's talk about about the apple refund. this is interesting. jeff, a lot of parents out there have given their kids their iphones or ipads to play angry birds or other games and get the upgrades and allow permission for the kids to get in there but left a window of opportunity for kids to buy other things but the ftc is on the parents' side? >> this is an amazing story. i'm a parent with two small children. the phrase inept purchases sends a chill down my spine. but my daughter comes and asks permission, my ol

the federal reserve released its latest beige book report on the economy on wednesday it's based on surveys conducted in the bank's twelve districts. the report suggests we'll tell activity increased in three quarters of the district's consumers spend as expected or a bit more over the winter holidays compared with two thousand twelve. manufacturing activity was bad then in the previous year. in all districts and the housing market improved overall of the unsung to sticks home sales and construction slowed fed officials were upbeat despite the weaker than expected december jobs report last week. they say two thirds of the district reported increases in hiring and there were also signs of wage increases. and in this didn't seem to be more confident of what the base but suggests and they're encouraged by the latest batch of data that point toward a solid recovery in stock prices rallied for a second day on wednesday the dow jones rose two thirds of a percent ending the day at sixteen thousand four hundred eighty one new law that snp ended at an all time high gaining half a percent is in japan

economy continued to growed a a moderate pace, that's the message from the federal reserve's late earth beige book survey of conditions around the nation over the past six weeks. now some regions reported a pick-up in growth thanks to more consumer spending and a jump in factory activity. as mentioned at the top of the program, u.s. factories have been busy, especially in new york state. the empire state manufacturing index rose to the highest level in two years in the month of december. new orders, shipments and even hiring all increased. well, the white house is betting big on even more u.s. manufacturing. president obama was in raleigh, north carolina today, to announce a new public/private manufacturing hub to be developed there. the goal is to bring more research and tech jobs to the u.s. >> we've made progress. and that's what i mean when i say this can be a break-through year for americans. the pieces are all there. to start bringing back more of the jobs that we've lost over the past decade. you know, a lot of companies around the world are starting to talk about bringing jobs back to
