you look across the bay of bengal. it encompasses a good portion of the bay of bengal. it is imminent to make landfall. at this point, it doesn't really matter whether the eye crosses the coast or not at this point. it's just that all of the wind, all of the rain has moved onshore. all of the outer bands. in the ordicia area, the state here, they're expecting as much as a foot of rainfall. the rain comes in, on this northern edge. it comes out, or the rind will be towards the bay of bengal on that southern edge. but we're still looking at this not just in the next couple of hours, but over the next day or two to impact this region, with a storm surge, flooding. they did evacuate hundreds of thousands of people. but this is an area that's very congested with potential potentially millions of people that could or will be affected. it is an agricultural area, an industrial area, and a lot of people are there just to protect their property. well, as we look into the next 24 hours, it comes onshore as a strong category 4 tropical cyclone -- what we would classify on the saff

the cyclone is so big that it covers most of the bay of bengal. hundreds of thousands of people have already left their homes and all flights in the region have been cancelled. >>> storms this big are rare. cyclone phailin covers most of the bay of bengal, has wind speeds almost as fast as a formula 1 race car. >> damage will be very severe to -- very severe. especially in the low lying areas, and of the inhabitants of the shore areas. >> even before it makes landfall, phailin has caused flooding and cut electricity. the gate has fallen damaging electric wires and we are facing a lot of problems to work in this condition. the electricians have been working here since last night. >>> flights have been cancelled affecting thousands of passengers. stock up on food and he other supplies. phailin is the most powerful storm to hit the region in more than 14 years. back in 1999 a cyclone killed around 15,000 people but weather forecasters say phailin isn't expected to be as strong and technology is helping to be better informed and making it likely that

that's what's happened across the bay of bengal. as we continue to monitor this storm we continue to watch it track north northwest. now the actual eye of the storm continues to make its way to the north and it's making its way north. that's why the situation is deteriorating across odisha. there is a lot of areas that have rivers and dell as the so the reason why this area is so subject to severe flooding is because not only the population density, there's 7.2 million people lying in the path of odissa, a lot of the mountainous area, lot of the folks liver in odissa, really doesn't make a difference whenever the structures aren't there to support the people. so we're talking about a 20 feet or more storm surge, in addition to that, wind gusts of 160 miles per hour, at least 150 miles per hour but up to 160 miles per hour and 20 inches of rainfall. this is a very dangerous storm and i think the folks there need to take it seriously. the indian meteorological authority makes it seem different but the last time a storm hit was in 1999

this is the strongest cyclone in about 14 years here in the bay of bengal. the last storm to hit this area this strorm caused upwards of 10,000 deaths out here. not saying that is going to happen. a lot has changed in the past 14 years. but it just shows how serious this storm system is. winds gusting at 235 kilometers per hour. expecting to make landfall in the state of orissa here by saturday evening, pushing onshore, still as a very severe cyclonic storm system. this is where tens of thousands of people have evacuated here ahead of the storm, heading to shelters, told by the indian meteorological department, get out of harm's way with this one. definitely people are taking it seriously. and farther inland there could be a major crop loss with this as well as heavy rainfall will cause some serious flooding. we definitely want to continue to watch on this one. and not to mention we have our third system out here. this is tropical storm whichpa. this will track off to the north into tokyo, at least along the pacific coast of japan by tuesday, into wednesday

across the bay of bengal, a cyclonic system over the eastern part of the ocean. it's now afcing the islands with full force and now moving towards the southwest at a slow pace. it could become a very severe cyclonic storm. but by the time it reaches the northeast coast of india with it could be downgraded to a cyclonic storm and hit the locations by saturday night, i should say. and we're expecting strong winds and heavy rains. now we're expecting more than 200 millimeters of rain to fall across the locations. flooding and lands slides, all of them are going to be a very big issue over the weekend. now across the rest of east asia, looking quite dry across japan. but further towards the south, we have a couple of tropical disturbances. one here is a tropical depression, which could become a tropical storm within the next 24 hours. and it's now approaching the d philippine pipts's now a troop call storm but will likely become a severe tropical storm and cut across over the weekend. strong winds, high surf are going to be a very big concern across this location. ac

another system to watch is over the bay of bengal. this one is now a cyclonic storm.u remember, it has been lingering as a low pressure system for days, bringing lots of rain for the west coes of the indochina peninsula. again, it's now strengthened to a cyclonic storm and will likely move north and northwest, probably hit odisha by the weekend as a very severe cyclonic storm. so we have to monitor this system as well. temperatures are going to be in the 30s in hong kong as well as taipei. but towards the north, very chilly in ulan bator. 6 degrees for the high. in beijing, 21 degrees. cloudy but windy conditions that could ease hazy conditions there. across the americas, we have a slow-moving low pressure system across the east coast. the center is now located over the mid-atlantic coast. and as you can see, it's not going to move. that means heavy rain will continue. so flood risk will remain very high for the next few days. also strong winds will raise the potential for beach erosion across coastal areas. behind it we have a winter storm over the southwest. it's no
