nbc's steve kornacki at the big board now to break down these new numbers.ve, what do we know about where that support has come from, that new support from mr. biden seems to have picked up? >> interesting you mention it, there are some undecided voters out there. there are some people, it looks like, after the debate who changed their minds in this race. this is what it looks like after the debate. this is our nbc/"wall street journal" poll. 14-point margin there for biden over trump. again, as you say, post debate, pre-trump covid. this really is a peer measure of the reaction to the debate. again, what was it before the debate? it was eight. what is it now? 14. that's a significant change. that's as high as biden's lead has been this general election in our polling. again, it seems to be in response to the debate. you look deeper inside the numbers and say, which particular groups seem to respond the most, either positively to biden or negatively to trump? here's one. senior citizens. before the debate, biden in our polling had a narrow lead with voters o

steve kornacki is at the big board. you've been digging into numbers. what do they tell us about the election? >> interesting in pennsylvania. the polling average here. biden's lead about four points on average in pennsylvania. i'll show you two sets of number. one gets democrats excited. these are the ballots returned in pennsylvania. mail-in voting underway. nearly 700,000 ballots returned. we're seeing this in other states for democrats. you're seeing it in pennsylvania certainly. you're seeing it elsewhere. democrats excited about this number. what gets republicans excited in pennsylvania are these numbers right here. these are voter registrations in pennsylvania since june. the last few months. republicans here with nearly 200,000 more registrations than democrats significantly less than that. so republicans gaining in registrations in pennsylvania. and no surprise there, talk about this in pennsylvania. talk about this nationally. republicans think in the trump campaign is saying they think they've identified new voters. folks who may not be picke

he happens to be at the big board tonight where we will be seeing a lot of him these days.20 days and counting here. let's start with the 30,000 foot view of what's going on here. this is the national poll average. right now little less than three weeks away from election day. joe biden with a ten point advantage on average over donald trump. biden is over 50% right now in the polling average, so that's ten points nationally. now, remember, in 2016, hillary clinton won the national popular vote over donald trump. she won that by two points, and that was not enough to get her to victory in the electoral college. biden leading by a much bigger margin now. let's take a look at some of the battleground states here. here is a lengthy list of battleground states. this is what happened in 2016. you see from the closest to the furthest to the biggest margin here, but these were all trump victories from michigan by a hair, pennsylvania, wisconsin, both under a point, all the way down to ohio, iowa, up here ten points. so this was 2016. now we mentioned biden opening up those sizable

for more on the state of the race let's go to steve kornacki at the big board.teve, let's go where things go in the homestretch in the swing states. >> yeah, a bunch of key numbers we can look at here, andrea. first of all, just look at how it's changed in the last week, the national race here, biden's lead nationally was basically 10 points. now that has come down to a little over 8, basically down about 2 points. so for trump it's a step in the right direction but he's probably got to get that significantly closer to put the electoral college in place. as you say, you had that debate last night. polls will come out in the next few days. see if that eats into biden's lead from trump's standpoint at all. so that's one thing to watch, and let's take a look at the battleground states here. the first group these were the narrowest trump wins in 2016. three traditionally democratic states. you can see trump's margin. it was less than 1 point in each one of these states. what does the polling look like on average on these states right now? these are the swing states
