colleagues that bill brown introduced my wife ellen and i to took us to this site. a chinese medical doctor, dr. wong, took us there on the first morning that we'd arrived, and he said i know exactly where birch was buried. he said my father was a presbyterian missionary, and he was there at the burial service, and he took us, took us right there. there's no evidence, no -- nothing but a few cement slabs now that exist. there's no memorial, no sign or anything like that. but we were able to locate the site as well as the catholic church where the funeral took place. the funeral, which william miller described as remarkable, was attended by japanese officers and others who had just surrendered to americans at the end of the war. so you have this very curious collection of people, japanese as well as chinese, troops who had been working for the japanese who are attending the funeral of this american officer. the death of john birch came as a shock to americans in china. general albert weeder meyer was commanding officer. he received news just a few days after, a radio

clinton back in '92 when jerry brown played the role of bernie sanders to bill clinton as that played out over the primary. how big a deal do you think that was for that campaign today? >> reporter: right, well, there were contentious moments between jerry brown and bill clinton back during the '92 race, during the primary. we know how that ended up. but a very different story today. this is a significant endorsement for a couple of reasons. jerry brown, very popular with democrats. a 77% approval rating. 56% statewide, and he sent his endorsement letter to democrats and also to independents. that's critical. independents can vote in the primary and they're going to be the big question mark next tuesday in terms of who pulls out a win in that state. let me read you a little bit of what jerry brown had to say. he said, the stakes couldn't be higher. our country faces an existential threat from climate change and the spread of nuclear weapons. a new cold war is on the horizon. this is no time for democrats to keep fighting each other. the general election has already begun. hillar

i also want to express appreciation to bill brown, the person who introduced me the chinese colleagues in the city of xuzhou where john birch was laid to rest. more on that a little bit later, but it is a great privilege to be here today for all of those reasons. when i started this project back in 2010 i had no idea who john birch was.was. like most americans, his name to me was synonymous with right-wing anti-communist politics in the us. when i was a kid growing up part of the time in michigan , the sets are the society, and there was a line that we only hailed the hero from whom we got our name. we are not sure what he did, but he is our hero just the same. so that made me kind of curious, but never enough to actually dig into it and find out. lo and behold i stumbled on information that he had been a missionary for military intelligence officer in china. i was quite astounded and curious. one of my 1st trips was up to the national archives in college park, and there was a fake oss file that have been declassified on the death of john birch. a lot of interesting information. that m

clinton had endorsed brown's opponent. we know billh jerry brown just a few weeks ago to talk politics. they had met in the mansion up in sacramento. they discussed politics. of course, they discussed domestic. si and, of course, as we have seen today jerry brown has decided to endorse hillary clinton. in many ways you might have to say it's because he thinks she has the best chance of defeating donald trump. he describes trump's run for the republican nomination as a dangerous candidacy. so there you have it. i guess what is old is not always new and enemies can become friends, at least in politics, carol. >> i guess that often happens. every time you hear it, it kind of like makes you step back and say wow. can you believe anything anybody says? how much will governor brown's endorsement mean? he's a very popular governor in california. >> very popular governor. as joe had just said earlier, known as one of the leading progressive voices in the democratic movement. he's had some issues where he's had to work on some tax issues, but t
