let's bring and bo -- bring in senator bob casey of pennsylvania, a democrat, a longtime leader in the state of pennsylvania. he has been in the senate now for quite some time. senator casey, from the scranton area of pennsylvania. great to have you here. beingr casey, i remember with you in scranton in 2017 right after president trump was elected. even then, we were talking about 2020. pennsylvania was going to be a key state in the campaign. as you look at the results and reflect on the past campaign, where is pennsylvania right now politically speaking? sen. casey: it is very much a close estate as we can tell by the election results. donald trump won in 2016 by 0.7%. 44,292. i memorized that number. but now joe biden is winning by a similar margin, as we speak, on the unofficial count. about 47,000. that will grow and could hit as high as 80,000. it is a close state. what we have to recognize that going forward. we have to learn a lot on our side from 2020 if we are going to get ready for the 2022 election coming up, where we have a governor's race for an open seat, as well as an o

bob: could you ever see yourself running for governor down the line leader in your career? sen. caseyjust turned 60 years old this year. david lawrence was about 68 when he got elected governor. there's always inspiration out there. [laughter] bob: president-elect biden is from scranton. are you privately pushing for the presidential library down the line to be in scranton, pennsylvania rather than delaware? sen. casey: we have not gotten that far down the road. we are still at 47000 and the margin is still climbing. we at least want to certify the results before we talk about a presidential library. when you consider the issues that joe biden talked about, it set forth a real detailed plan. the virus, and jobs, the economic ditch we are in, you can see those challenges right here in pennsylvania. number one, we still have a very high unemployment rate. september, 518,000 people out of work. a little more than a percent. -- 8%. that is low from where it was in april through august. secondly, we have a raging virus. numbers going way up in pennsylvania. 243,000 cases roughly and more t

joining us now is senator bob casey of the state in question, pennsylvania.ou so much for joining us. all eyes are on pennsylvania right now. when will the vote count be finished? sen. casey: that is a really good question. if i could give you the hour, i would. it is hard to estimate or be precise about that but i will say this -- people have worked very hard to get this count to be completed. it is still ongoing and there is still work to do. the last number i saw was in terms of the mail-in ballots is still about 110,000. and then you have provisional ballots that they will start in many counties that have them, that started processing those. but i think we will probably have a much better sense of the vice of the margin that president biden will win the i doubt it would be late tonight, but certainly sometime tomorrow where you would have a sense of where the margin would be in the unofficial count. that margin would go up, i think pretty significantly when you continue the count to get the official count for the certification of the election. number,id t

bob casey said people want to move on. they do want to move on. but people also voted, and they deserve to have their votes counted. and also, us talking about this and showing this transparency really does help to squash some of the conspiracy theories that are going out there. look at arizona as we said, as i set that up there. right now 1.6 million votes have been cast for each of those candidates. joe biden has a 17,000 vote lead. still votes coming in from a couple counties. state officials said they'll be counting just a little bit more. now here is the question on a recount in arizona. very hard for donald trump because if joe biden holds this lead, if he holds the lead, more than 200 vote, don, then joe biden will win arizona very easily. there will be no recount in that state. >> and if he does, he'll be way over the number that he needs to win. >> right. >> and then everyone will say why you contesting this and taking to it court? because still if you overturned what you said, then trump would probably not win anyway. listen, that's in t

pennsylvania is tightening, as you said, we just spoke to bob casey. knows pennsylvania politics, he is a senator there. he believes -- now, again, this is his belief -- he believes that the former vice president will take pennsylvania simply balls, as we have been stating here, as you've been talking about, where those votes are coming in. and then you have georgia. georgia tightening as well and you had the president come out yesterday and say, listen, you know, pennsylvania, we're ahead, why are not calling this for us. this place we are ahead, why are they not calling it for us? it's because what is happening here, happens in every single election, especially a presidential election, country-wide election, the votes come in at different times. they come in sometimes after election day and sometimes they are not counted until after election day. so this is a normal part of the process. the only thing that's not normal is that we're doing this in the middle of a pandemic. >> you know, the president once mused that he could shoot somebody in the face

bob casey himself was talking about 100,000 vote margin, there's some sentiment might be larger still. bob casey has been playing steve kornacki on his own as part of an effort to assure democrats in the state what's happening. posting regular zooms of him in front of a map talking about different state of play. just indication of how the biden campaign has felt it was important given what the trump team has been doing and the president himself not being seen publicly but tweeting, to communicate fully and publicly about everything they're seeing to keep calm in the party. democrats known perhaps to panic a bit as we saw happening beginning last night. >> just to be clear last night, only one costeve kornacki. >> reporter: of course. often imitated, never duplicated. >> well said. >> thanks so much. with the latest on the trump campaign, nbc news senior reporter shannon. lot of tweets were flagged by twitter, full of disinformation, and there's reporting also that the president feels dejected as path to his re-election are disappearing. >> they're not acting like a campaign that's win

what does bob casey tell you? these are people that can move things. what are they telling you when you say what the hell is going on in congress? >> congressman brady retired this year and mary gay is the new representative. bob casey is a terrific champion for philadelphia and for pennsylvania. we just -- we don't have control of the senate. i hope we don't have to wait as long as georgia to get that back, but if that's the case, that's the case. but i think that mcconnell just won't move anything. there's a bill sitting over there that he could put on the floor, but he won't do it. >> are there restrictions you're not doing simply because it's just not fair to some of these businesses but you would do them if you had some financial -- if you knew they had financial relief? >> yep. we did continue outdoor dining. it's getting -- it's in november and philadelphia gets cold. but outdoor dining is still able to do takeout. pick-up and takeaway is still okay. what we found in addition to the indoor dining we found gatherings like weddings and baby shower

bob casey affirmed that.id, look, i think by the end of the day it's possible to have results in the mid-90s. that would be enough potentially to call the race. he's calling it by 100,000 votes for biden. we'll see. nevertheless, clearly the trend is going in that direction. one more thing, and i know you're not old enough to have known about the hanging chads in 2000, but i did spend 36 days in tallahassee. i was talking to an election lawyer about the way they are sort of throwing all of this at the wall from the trump campa n campaign. he made a really good point which is politics sometimes likes chaos. judges don't. we'll see whether or not any of these work because so far, judges have pretty much 100% been rejecting what the trump campaign has been throwing at them legally. steph? >> you know who else loves chaos? lawyers. you know who our show loves? chris jansing, the queen. >>> i want to dig deeper into pennsylvania. pennsylvania lieutenant governor john fetterman. do you know -- we've been getting up

should democrats move toward someone who is more like a bob casey democrat? to make sure that seat moves democratic in 2022? >> it will depend upon a lot. a think we will nominate someone. there will be a number of contenders for that. it is still pretty early. i think it is going to be wide open. i'm not sure that i want to impose a predicate for a label on that nominee. our state has changed enormously. just in your lifetime, even more dramatically, in my much older lifetime, the votes the democrats are getting in suburban communities are extraordinary. even from 16 to 20, the vote went up in montgomery county by five percentage points. biden one montgomery county by 26 points. it was 21 last time. delaware county went up, as well. democratsan vote for is really rising and has the potential to grow even more. we have got some work to do in rural pennsylvania. but joe biden is able to ship some of those margins a little bit and do better in northeastern pennsylvania. i think a democrat be nominated in 2022 without an incumbent senator on the republican side

it's part of the identity, it's something that in the past with the previous governor bob casey represented, a catholic working-class profamily anti, antiabortion party that took on a lot of positions that donald trump is generally taken on. these are people who voted for this, their parents voted for this, the grandparents voted for it, they're actually thinking about, a lot of these voters are thing about with their grandparents would have done if they had been building that day. that's the way they're looking at it. but they're looking at the democratic party as it is, one that's very alien to a lot of those values and it doesn't quite make sense. there's a lot of folks who are still undecided not because they didn't know which candidate stood for which but they were a little confused and feeling politically homeless as if the party that had represented them from decades and generations was no longer that party and maybe donald trump was it, as one assistant manager downtown my wife said it sounded like they were going to the other side. he said i just don't know what my side is anymore.

i talked to bob casey, who probably knows this place better than anybody as the senator. he tells me, all joe biden has to do is keep it closer. he's not going to hit obama numbers, but he has to keep it closer here in lackawanna and luzerne county than hillary clinton was able to four years ago. now, i'll pass it on to my friend, cal perry, who is in milwaukee. >> reporter: chris, thank you very much. obviously, democrats remember what happened four years ago, less than 25,000 votes, the margin in a donald trump victory. so they vowed to take it more seriously. joe biden has been here three times in his general election campaign. now, this is happening in a hot zone during a pandemic. we've seen voting numbers through the roof. more than 1.8 million people have already voted in this state. 500,000 in person. 1.2 mail-in. the game is simple for democrats. run the numbers up in places like milwaukee and in madison. for the president, it's about the rural areas, as it is across the country. democrats hoping the early voting numbers an indication of the enthusiasm. a word of

now we turn to democratic senator bob casey. senator casey from pennsylvania.t is your sense, senator, of where things stand right now in your state? >> craig, obviously we're still going to be counting for a while. we still have a lot of mail-in ballots to count as you heard in the last hour. the four suburban counties around philadelphia as well as in the city of philadelphia and allegheny county where pittsburgh is. there's still some mail-in ballots coming in to smaller counties, counties that president trump will win easily, but i think joe biden can pick up some of those votes as well. we'll be counting for a while, but i think joe biden is going to win the race, and i think some estimates are, some analysts i have confidence in say it will be 100,000 votes or more. >> let's talk about the upper chamber for a moment there. again, we just saw and heard from senator mitch mcconnell. democrats had hoped to pick up a number of seats. at this point it looks like they will pick up that seat in arizona perhaps, but south carolina a disappointment, kentucky a dis
