bob redell, nbc, bay area news. all right, bob, thank you. well, mudslide has closed down a stretch of highway nine. this is in santa cruz mountains. eight roads closed between sanborn and redwood gulch roads. the closure started yesterday. not only are crews there cleaning away all of the mess, but they're also monitoring the hillside to determine if that slide is stable. highway nine is scheduled to fully reopen. it was at 6:00 this morning, but that weather likely impacting the progress there. luckily, we have a clear day today. a lot of people need it, but we've got another storm lining up. we do, and it's going to be in and out of here as we go toward early tomorrow morning and into the afternoon. a look at the flood concerns that still continue for the russian river at guerneville. that area shaded in red, are the areas dealing with the flood warning that will be in effect until tomorrow morning, when we are expected to be in the clear with those high water levels that do continue. but we have seen the rising water levels causing a lot

reporting live here on the end of niles canyonlong the swollen alameda creek in fremont, bob redell. nbc bay area news. fast moving current there. thanks, bob. well, now to a live look for you at stormranger. this is a top san bruno mountain, which is tracking all of the rain that we've been getting. now there are new flood watches and landslide warnings in effect right now in the north bay. napa county sheriff issuing a flood watch for people living in the oak circle area. now, it is said that hocker creek could flow into oak circle. so people are being advised to move their cars and trucks to higher ground. evacuation warnings remain in effect for several of those homes in the deer trail road area. this is where there was a mudslide just last week. police are also telling people to be ready to evacuate in a moment's notice, and do not drive on those flooded roads. now, the flash flood warning right now is in effect for some areas in los angeles, specifically for communities impacted by last month's wildfires. evacuation warnings are in effect for parts of eaton, palisades, sunset an

bob redell, nbc, bay area news. thank you bob. well, two bay area communities facing school closures are having different conversations today in one district. families and educators are fighting for the future of their schools and the other. they're getting the reprieve, at least for now. nbc bay area's kris sanchez explains what's happening. district leadership in san francisco and san jose's franklin mckinley elementary district are meeting tonight, and though they are 50 miles apart geographically, families in both districts have been fighting the same fight, trying to keep their schools open. but with budget holes this big, something's got to give. we'll start in the franklin mckinley district, where up to five schools may close and up to 50 teachers could lose their jobs. the district says they have 40% fewer students than 14 years ago, and lower enrollment means fewer funds. parents plan to rally ahead of a board meeting today, hoping to get that board to postpone a vote or ditch the vote altogether. one of the schools is ca

today in the bay's bob redell joins us live. and, bob, do we know what's going to happen before this federal judge? we know this hearing is at 930 this morning in oakland in federal court. good morning to kris. we know that a federal judge will be holding a status hearing with both the prosecution and the defense, presumably to see where both sides are in preparation for their trial. it's not clear if former mayor, former oakland mayor sheng thao and the three other defendants will be in court, or if it'll just be their attorneys. last month, tao did appear in federal court to plead not guilty to charges of bribery, conspiracy and mail and wire fraud. prosecutors allege that tao and her partner, andre jones, used her influence as mayor in a bribery scheme with father and son city contractors david and andy duong. they run california waste solutions, which is oakland's main recycling service. in court records, prosecutors have revealed text messages exchanged between andy duong and a coconspirator weeks ahead of the november mayor

nbc bay area's bob redell joins us from san jose, where some people are preparing.ow they sound like a broken record when they tell us this, but if you are driving during the storm that's supposed to hit overnight and you see lying water on the road, like for instance, in an underpass like this here in san jose, don't drive through it. turn around. we are on santa clara street near the sap center, as i mentioned in san jose, which does tend to flood during big storms. this will be one area that the city of san jose's transportation department will be keeping an eye on tonight, going into tomorrow. yesterday, workers here in the city, they cleaned out more than 90 storm drains in east san jose, sometimes by hand, sometimes by a large vacuum truck because there was so much muck and debris. the city will also be positioning portable pumps in areas that are prone to flooding. up in the north bay, the santa rosa fire department tells us evacuation warnings are still in effect for areas hit by landslides during last week's storms. that region has already seen around three

and that's where we find today in the bay's bob redell. he is live there now, and sadly, one person died in this. you are correct, sadly. good morning to you, laura. the fire is out. the coroner is come and gone. so is the fire department. a contractor has been out here boarding up this house. you can see some of the items that are left on the front lawn right there. there's a charred remains of what looks like a motorized scooter that somebody was handicapped might use to get around. and then behind that, there's the remains of this two story house. this is on nicholas court here in brentwood, where one person died in the garage, which you can see again, has been just boarded up by some contractors here who look like they're getting ready to go. but they just boarded up that garage. the fire was called in around 1145 last night. according to the fire department, the fire appears to have started in the garage. neighbors told the fire department they thought someone was still inside the home. firefighters attempted a rescue and that's when

nbc bay area's bob redell starts our team coverage and bob our crews any closer to clearing all thisebris? they're getting there, but we're still talking about several hours. chp tweeted out laura marcus at southbound 101 here in sausalito was going to be open around noon. that'd be an hour. but i just spoke to caltrans and they say that is not going to happen. it's going to be several more hours. we're talking about well into the evening before the two right lanes of southbound 101 are reopened. here in sausalito, you can see workers are trying to make progress, and they are. here's a live look from nbc bay area. sky ranger gives you a sense of what caltrans is dealing with. there's a huge chunk of the steep hillside along the freeway that came sliding down. it was around 7:00 last night during the heavy rainstorm, and it ended up well into the right lanes of traffic. you can see the dirt stain there on the road. the workers, as i mentioned, they have made a lot of progress in the cleanup, especially when you compare to earlier. this is video from a few hours ago when we were out he

here in sausalito along southbound 101 bob redell. nbc bay area news. a break from the heavy rain. things are drying up. here's meteorologist kari hall with today's's forecast. we've had a busy end of the week, and we're still dealing with some lingering showers across the region. but that atmospheric river is moving away from the bay area, and our sky will clear throughout the afternoon. and high temperatures topping out in the upper 50s for the north bay. a lot of 57 degree high temperatures around the north bay into the peninsula as well as the south bay, and tomorrow will be slightly warmer with some low 60s in the south county. a lot of upper 50s and low 60s from the tri-valley to the north bay, and in san francisco, 59 degrees. on sunday, the north bay will see a slight chance of rain and more clouds, while the south bay will continue on with sunshine. we'll talk about this and look ahead to the presidents day holiday, as well as next week's forecast in the next 30 minutes. thank you so much, kari. we're going move on to some other news. now, the

i'm bob redell outside fremont city hall, where tonight at 7:00, the city council will vote on a newlessness. the council will vote on a new ordinance that would not only ban encampments on public property and private property not specifically designed for camping, but would also make it a crime to, quote, aid and abet an illegal encampment. those caught breaking the law could face possible jail time, and a $1,000 fine. leaders in another struggling bay area school district will meet tonight to weigh possible closures. san jose's franklin mckinley district is considering closing five elementary schools, including dahle elementary, named for a nine over 11 hero, jason dahl. the district is grappling with declining enrollment, and opponents plan to rally tonight ahead of that meeting. it is a cold start to our tuesday morning kari it is, and we are just above freezing in san jose now at 33 degrees 36, in palo alto and in walnut creek. and after this cold morning start, we will see more clouds coming in and high temperatures in the upper 50s. we'll have a chance of rain overnight, but s

here's a look at our top stories i'm bob redell.ties throughout the bay area that is hunkering down for tonight's storm that is expected to bring lots of wind and rain. yesterday, workers with the city of san jose cleaned out more than 90 storm drains. this is just an east san jose sometimes doing this by hand, sometimes by a large vacuum truck. trying to get all that gunk and debris out of those storm drains. the city will also be positioning portable pumps in areas that are prone to flooding. well, the latest incoming storm is already prompting the nba to make some changes ahead of all star weekend. tomorrow's outdoor kickoff party at thrive city is now canceled, but the warriors say the visitors can still enjoy the restaurants indoors at chase center. and check out this new video. this is from lick observatory on mount hamilton earlier this morning. you can see there the roads covered, the snow piling up on some of those vehicles as well. meteorologist kari hall of course, tracking what we can expect. that storm coming in, bringi
