this is a very typical wednesday night evening at the borderline bar and grill. is a very active social event. weeknights they have two step dancing. it's very much a country bar and grill. the place was supposed to be packed. they believe at least 200 were inside that bar. at this point l.a. county sheriff's department, which would be the supervising officers there on scene because it is part of ventura county specifically, they're saying there were about 30 shots fired and 11 injured in the melee here. there are reports that the shooter may be down inside. there was a young woman who was saying she eyeballed the gunman, described him as a male, didn't give any descriptions further than that. but we have yet to find out where these injured have been taken. i do know there is the los robles hospital, an acute care hospital in the region. can you imagine, these kids go for a wednesday night, many of them probably having just gone through the election. it's been such a passionate thing with the young people around this country. and they were maybe out celebrating a

this happened at the borderline bar and grill here in thousand oaks. this community is 40 miles northwest of metro la. according to witnesses the gunman was wearing a black trench coat and walked and and opened fire into the bar. the first deputies responded at 11:22. it was college night at the bar. a lot of witnesses were released -- they were wearing college sweatshirts. 11 patrons were shot and transported to the hospital. the gunman was also shot on the scene. it's unclear if he took his own life. one victim shot was the sheriff's sergeant, a 29 year veteran -- ron heius. we heard from the sheriff this morning announcing he passed where the hospital. >> losing him -- we work out together -- it is terrific and terrible. it saddens our hearts and there are parents of the 11 other victims in their whose hearts are ripped out tonight. i know there are parents wondering was my child in there or my sister or brother? there is no way to describe this. it saddens us all and tears at our hearts and emotions. if it doesn't, there is something wrong with us.

the rampage took place at the borderline bar and grill in thousand oaks.iles northwest of los angeles. it was filled with college students who came to listen to country music. police later found the gunman dead inside. he's just been identified as 28-year-old ian david long, a former marine. carter evans is near the scene in thousand oaks. >> reporter: good morning, we now know more about the gunman. it is 28-year-old ian long. he lives not tar from here. he opened fire at the bar. witnesses saw him shoot a bouncer before going inside the bar and shooting at random. at least 11 people were killed inside that bar. a deputy wasn't that far away. he was a sheriff sergeant and responded to the scene where the highway patrol officer. they entered that bar within three minutes of the shooting. that sheriffs deputy was shot and died at the hospital. the highway patrol officer is okay. investigators are on the scene right now just beginning to take a look inside. witnesses tell us it was chaos when the shooting was going off. they were throwing chairs through wind
