live in oakland, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> emergency responders on stand by, tense moments as a flight from san jose was forced to return and make an emergency landing. janine de la vega live to let us know what happened. good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon. everyone on the aalaska afternoons flight is safe. that boeing 737 had been taken out of service, now is being looked at by maintenance crews. we didn't get a chance to talk to passengers because they were behind security gates but we were able to find out what happened from emergency crews and the airline. here is a shot. alaska airlines flight 837 landing safely at around 9:40 a.m. at san jose. a team of emergency crews which included fire trucks were stationed close by as a precaution. the plane departed 8:25 from san jose headed to honolulu, an hour into the flight a light came on in the cockpit. alaska airline says it was a power issue in the navigation system. the pilot made it safe and turned around. >> that honolulu flight is a good four, five hours over water. out of an abundance of caution the pilot di

but as brian flores joins us live to explain, this morning's downpour caused problems across the city. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. we're high above the oakland hills. it's cloudy right now. as we take a look at the traffic, you can see the traffic moving nicely at this minute. if you watched the ktvu morning news, you know the rain made quite a mess on the roads and proved fatal. we were there when an suv stalled in the number three lane on westbound 24 west of telegraph avenue before 5:00 a.m. the chp says the female driver stayed in the car when another car slammed into the back of it. when the chp and paramedics arrived, they tried to resuscitate the driver in the suv, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. the driver who hit her was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. the chp say they don't believe alcohol or drugs were factors. it's also unclear how fast that driver was going. they think rain was a factor. they will bring a mechanical expert to analyze the car. this stopped traffic until about 6:30 this morning when all lanes were reopened. rain caused problems

ktvu channel 2 reporter brian flores is joining us from the mccarthur bart station. >> reporter: the reaction we have gotten from many bart riders a sense of relief. but also a sense of trepidation and nervousness because they don't know about the reliability of the system. but the good news is the fact that all the trains are running normally. this after crews worked hard to -- they also fixed the tracks near the concord bart station where it happened. but yesterday is whenth pittsburgh bay point line came fully back in service. we spoke with bart riders about whether they trust the transportation system despite yet another inconvenience. >> i don't really trust bart. well i pray. and i watch my surroundings. and then i just watch -- i watch how bart is conducted and everything. >> i ride it every day. it's a great mode of transportation. >> over the weekend clearing the tracks was a nonstop production. crews had to use cranes. workers brought in two 39-foot sections of track to make repairs then came the test runs and the trains came back online yesterday. live in

brian flores joining us live there this morning. and brian, you are talking -- you are hearing from both sides on this controversial issue. >> reporter: i am, dave. we're live in the san pablo hills. some residents say they are leaving in fear and frustration because they don't know when the next landslide will be. many of the residents still dealing with the aftermath of the landslide three years ago. huge tarp and sandbag cover the area that was affected. many residents say the city has done nothing to shore up the landing to shore up their names. we were there three years ago when the heavy rains and what residents say was a faulty drainage system caused homes to be damaged. four homes are on widen street. three on hillcrest road. some residents tell the contra costa times that they blame the city for not fixing the drainage system. to this day, it remains a threat that more landslides could happen. some residents have sued the city to try to get this fixed. one resident says there's a lot of fienter pointing on -- finger-pointing

brian flores is live in walnut creek where the removal is getting underway. behind you, brian. >> reporter: there is a lot of activity going on here. good morning. it's also raining a lot as well. crews have a very task to remove this palm tree. as you can see, here is the 20 ton crane that's here to remove the palm tree which is closest to this home here in walnut creek. it is a 20-year-old canary island palm. what's interest, the homeowners were set to shell out their own cash to get rid of it until a land scraper subcontracted by caltrans came out to look at it to see if they could use it on the bridge. the homeowner was prepared to pay $3,000. but then the contractor saw the tree, contacted the homeowner. they said how about $1,000? they agreed. here we are. you won't be seeing this tree in the immediate future. the tree has to make a seven- hour trip to riverside to a holding yard where it will be inspected for disease. if it's given the okay, it will be placed on the bay bridge. caltrans plans to add 22 additional trees in the spring. >> they can withsta

brian flores is at the rockridge b.a.r.t.ion to this plane and more on how the board of directors wants to get the public involved. >> reporter: good morning. we'll bring up the topic of the b.a.r.t. strike. certainly a lot of people weigh in on it because so many people were affected by it last year. we got a lot of strong reactions this morning. what if b.a.r.t. strikes were prohibited in the future. that's the topic of discussion tonight and they certainly want you to weigh in. now, the burt poord does not have the power to prohibit strikes from happening. but keller plans to lead a discussion about whether voters should weigh in. he proposes an advisory ballot measure that will ask voters whether the state legislature should prohibit strikes on b.a.r.t.s. the alternative during contract negotiations would be for both side to go before an arbitration board where the decision of that board would become final. keller plans on touching upon those details during tonight's board meeting. as we mentioned, this remains a pretty h

ktvu's brian flores is live in san francisco city hall with reaction to this historic anniversary. orning, brian. >> reporter: good morning. a lot has changed since those first wedding ceremonies took place and licenses issued to the first guy marriage couples out there. this afternoon, many people including mayor newsom will hold a special ceremony behind me here at city hall. that's planned for 5:00 p.m. tonight. guest speakers include ed lee as well as newsom. speaking of newsom, his move to issue same-sex marriage licenses to 4,000 couples was pushed back at the time. many remember the long lines of couples waiting to get married. that went on for a month. that launched several court battles and then you had to struggle with the battle over prop 8. that was brewing at the polls and then the eventual defeat with the supreme court allowing it to stand. during a ceremony this afternoon, newsom and several others will be honored for their work. we spoke to people at the castro district to see how they arerring the anniversary -- are remembering the anniversary. >> freedom for everyo

now brian flores is in heyward this morning with what we know so far, brian. >> reporter: good morningunanswered questions in the this apparent home invasion rob lay it happened yesterday. according to police, someone tried to rob a home on the 21,000 block of western but also reporting that the victim apparently shot and kilted one of those intruders. i want to go to video yesterday from the scene. again happened shortly after 5:30. it was raining during that time as well. police say after they received a car of this robbery, when they arrived, they found one man dead inside nap man according to police was one of the suspects, and he had been shot to death. the victim, apparently told police that other robbers had fled the scene. now about 20 minutes after that, police got another call of somebody dropping off woman at a nearby hospital. also suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. it's believed according to police that this woman was part of the robbery, it is unclear this morning her condition. it's also unclear whether the the victim was targeted in this case, how the victim was do

ktvu channel 2 reporter brian flores is in walnut creek. the landscaping project is paying off for this homeowner. brian. >> reporter: yeah it certainly is, pam. good morning to you. we are here in walnut creek where later this morning a 60- ton crane will be here to remove what you see behind me. take a look at the palm tree closer to the home. it's a 20-year-old canary island palm tree. the walnut creek homeowner tells ktvu news before landscaper came to his home he was going to spend $3,000 of his own money to get rid of it because it was getting too close to their house. they came to the homeowner, saw the tree and said this is the type of tree we are looking for for the bridge and offered to give the homeowner $1,000 to take it off his hands. they agreed and here they are. andrew gordan says they plan on adding 22 additional trees. we spoke to one neighbor who was up early one morning because he was curious. >> i will have my farm are ready then. >> reporter: according to cal tran they have a budget of $900,000 for landscaping along th

i'm brian flores in for tori campbell. >>> breaking news from stanford university where part of the campus been evacuated due to a suspicious backpack. robert handa is on the scene. joins us live now with an update. robert? >> reporter: hello, brian. we're at stanford university on the outskirts of the union area, generally known as the student union area here on campus. you can see down the street here that police have cordoned off the area and the santa clara county sheriff's bomb squad is on the scene. now, around 9:00 this morning, university officials say there was a report of a suspicious package as you heard, a backpack, found outside of the union area near the auditorium. now, campus police evacuated the area after an abundance of caution. a bomb squad arrived here a little over an hour and a half ago. we've been told they are approaching very cautiously. we do not know whether they've gotten to the package. i know that they were surrounding it and using all sorts of ways to monitor it before they actually physically examined it. university officials emphasized that safety is their
