>> brian roberts has been described as a serial dealmaker. he makes a lot of acquisitions. what you will see is the company historically has made a 122 purchases worth a combined $207 billion. of those 114 of the transactions were in north america. only about $120 million were outside the u.s. for separate transactions in the u.s. and one separate transaction is -- in asia. there were six deal specifically in 2014. any of them companies you may not know that much about. there was a time warner cable purchase and now it appears to be dismissed or dropped, but you had comcast mining freewheel media and maybe quit for an undisclosed amount. if you look at the largest purchases the company has made the biggest is comcast court -- court in 2001 for 76 ilya dollars. that was before my time to be honest. after that comcast buying nbc universal for $16.7 billion. this is a company that has made acquisitions to give the growth to scale up. if it does not go through with the time warner cable purchase then where does it go next to go europe asia? another space outside cable televisio

charter, comcast, what possible concessions might brian roberts actually make to satisfy regulators? peter: there is a list of possibilities, and none of them really all that palatable to comcast. they like the deal on the table or else they would not have signed up but the big one up front is the sheer number of people that will have with the combined companies in terms of their broadband subscriptions. 57% of the country -- it is a big number in the eyes of the federal government. 29 percent of cable subscribers. it is less the cable, more the broadband. part of new york, los angeles chicago -- hard to imagine comcast would accept that. other aspects of this that they could again tweak as well could be some of the changes with regard to offering a standalone broadband cable option to americans. is that enough to satisfy the government? brendan: peter, there is a wrinkle in this that caught my eye, and it is a piece from paul sweeney basically pointing out the concentration is going to be much higher for one simple fact -- we have changed the way we define broadband. we now think of

it was the first question i asked brian roberts when the deal was announced back in february 2014.hlly, market power and broad band. market power and broad band. yes, the f.c.c. would they look at that? we knew they would. the d.o.j. they don't compete. >> they don't. what's amazing to me even during the time that the deal was announced, there's five more guys i can get programming from. hongsly, honestly, the events are overtaking the reason to block it. to me if it's justice and like the big bank deals, in the end it's the top guy at the d.o.j. and the top guy at comcast and everything else is a dance. >> the f.c.c. is more important. they were considering queening a hearing. by the way they never do that. they've got one guy on that whole hearing staff if the d.o.j. were the try you, they've got to get an injunction to stop st. deals unclear to me. we'll see, the point is there are certainly a lot of question marks around comcast to complete the transit actions. no break fee. of course, don't forget that. at this point the two sides have to be very much committed to work it out.

you don't think, you just put out a report you said obama is not going to save his friend brian roberts just said. i think the challenge is right now that this deal has been getting decidedly more difficult over the course of the last 12 months. if you look at what happened with net nutralneutrality that surprised not only comcast but how fervent that grassroots movement thatting atually got ing aactually got the president to come out and support title two of the internet. if you look at what's happening now it becomes challenging to approve. we thought for a while the conditions would be too intolerable for comcast. we believe that the government will block through the doj or just refer to an alj, which is basically a death sentence. >> to the extent that there is a meeting about concessions on wednesday. if you are a comcast, what would you be willing to offer and what would the government be willing to accept? meaning, what does that deal look like if a deal is to be had? >> part of the problem is that comcast is seen as a bad actor or actress in the former consent decree. the doj us

brian: ok. anybody at this table? oh, my goodness. robert: i am robert pickering from laurel christian school in laurel, mississippi. and the person that really touched me this week was senator collins yesterday. i believe she said congress may not be the cause of instability and polarization, but it might be a symptom. it is the communities across the nation, again with the confirmation bias, we also have to realize we cannot just blame it on other people. it is ourselves. what we have realized is there are some great people with completely opposite views that we have, but we cannot let different views stop us from reaching across the aisle and trying to reach a compromise. brian: why -- back to the question about why people feel so strongly negative about this town. robert: i believe it is from the politicization of the media. again, with major garrett, and senator isakson said you can't -- you can beat up anybody and get on tv, but the challenge for many people is trying to do something good and great and get an equal amount of coverage.
