. >> brianna keilar, you have breaking news about information about an upcoming meeting the campaigns are holding as a result of last night's debate. what do you have? >> so as you know, the republicans, nearly all of them, have been really frustrated with how last night's debate went down and now are taking the matters into their own hand. they are going to hold representatives from several of the campaigns are going to hold a meeting at 6:00 p.m. sunday night in washington, d.c., to sort of come up with a way that they can gain more control of the debate process, of the debate formats away from the national committee. they think the whole debate process has gotten out of happened under the control of the rnc and want to bring that back under their control. so earlier today, members from the ben carson, donald trump, lindsey graham and job bee jindal campaigns started talking and will meet together on sunday. >> you said trump, graham, who else? >> trump, graham, carson and jindal were the architects of this meeting but they've also brought in other candidates. so marco rubio, rick s

let's bring in our chief political correspondent dana bash and senior political correspondent brianna keilarat these numbers. voters think bernie sanders stole the show. so how do you explain the difference in opinion between these two different audiences? >> reporter: you know, part of it, wolf, is that bernie sanders has been garnering this enthusiasm that hillary clinton has been struggling to. and so he had a lot of people in his corner who were rooting for him. and he did do a good job. and so i think they have been very enthusiastic about his performance. they like specifically how he talks about economic issues, how he said that congress doesn't regulate wall street, wall street regulates congress. so you see even in how he was able to fund raise off of his debate performance. it's sort of this effect of enthusiasm that is getting more enthusiasm. the question for hillary clinton is after her debate fer performance which a lot of people look at and say was very solid, she was able to rebuff some of the questions about her iraq war vote and a number of other issues including flip-flopp

cnn senior political correspondent brianna keilar is live for us in las vegas. brianna, you're at a hillary clinton event. what does the campaign say? >> reporter: well, her campaign as well as bernie sanders campaign, jake, they are just thrilled. you mentioned bernie sanders raking in the cash after his debate performance. and hillary clinton's aides just really feel that she did what she needed to do. she had a very tough summer. she needed to pull out a really good debate performance. and they feel she really hit the mark. it's also very important for her as you look ahead to the next week. she's going to be having a very contentious we would expect hearing with republicans on capitol hill as they investigate the benghazi attack. >> i want to begin -- >> reporter: hillary clinton pushed back on criticism that she frequently changes position. >> are you a progressive or moderate? >> i'm a progressive. but i'm a progressive who likes to get things done. >> reporter: defending herself against charges from martin o'malley and bernie sanders that she's quick to fa

we go to brianna keilar behind me. we have seen a few of the candidates come in, check things out. what's going on where you are right now? >> yeah, that's right, erin. as you can see behind me we have some stand-ins here for the candidates. as a lot of the photographers from the myriad of cameras that we have here in the debate hall are making sure they're ready to go. 90 minutes from now. all of the candidates with the exception of hillary clinton have done walk throughs. they have come up on the set they'll be on for this evening. they have stood behind the lectern. some of them have done sound checks angoten reminder -- and gotten reminders about the time. they have learned where the lights are that remind them if they're running out of time. they can see where the moderators sit and we have the audience filing in. we have about 1,300 people here and a lot of them already taking their seats. it's a huge night for all of these candidates especially for the front-runner, hillary clinton, as she's looking to turn a corner here from the e-mail controversy that he's really haunted h

i want to bring in jeff selney, brianna keilar and neila malik ka henderson. hillary clinton has some 25 debates under her belt. what is her strategy with this one? >> well, i think -- and i do think that's interesting that you point out, she has 25 debates under her belt, but she hasn't done one for years. so i think she's trying to really prepare and come out and show some prowess certainly in her ability to debate. but what i've been told by a top campaign aide is that she wants to -- and this is her main objective, to cut through the politics. this campaign has not gone as scheduled. i think her aides would tell you, i think hillary clinton would tell you, she has seen so much focus on this e-mail controver controversy. it's brought her poll numbers down in terms of trustworthy ps. and i think she sees this as a moment when people are paying a lot of attention, there are more eyeballs and she wants to connect in a way you can cut through some of that stuff that she doesn't want to -- really, the stuff that she wants to turn the corner on. >> is that why --

brianna keilar joins me. a new sense of the candidate strategies. >> hillary clinton's team hoping she can cut through the politics but she has been preparing in earnest with lawyers who have been involved in other debate preparations, for instance, president obama. these lawyers are playing the roles of bernie sanders and martin o'malley but to talk to the bernie sanders camp, he isn't as engaged. there is always expectations management that goes into this. he has been to hear his camp tell it, studying up on the issues and just starting to practice what they are referring to as exchanges. as democratic presidential contenders get ready for their first debate in las vegas, hillary clinton is the candidate to beat in two states that could be key to slowing a bernie sanders surge. a new cnn orc poll shows her over sanders by 16 points and the spread bigger in south carolina. clinton leads sanders by 13 points and the vermont senator sees an ability to draw contrast. >> i don't get into personal attacks. there

brianna keilar is with us, and you are getting more information? >> yes, we are waiting to hear what the vice president is going to say, but to the point that you just said whether we are aware of what he is going to say, his key and those close to him, and his closest confidants and friends are playing it close to the vest. those close to the circle have been reading the tea leaves and reading what the sort of the tone of what the vice president has been saying, and a lot of them believe he is going to get into the race. many other observers have is been looking at the things that he has been saying in recent days, and taking that as an indication that he may get into the race. for instance the last couple of days, he has really drawn a contrast with hillary clinton on everything from the decision to go in and get osama bin laden and even a relationship with the republicans. and you know, wolf, hillary clinton described the republicans as one of her political enemies at the debate last week, and very pointed multiple times the vice president said

. >> our correspondent brianna keilar is out there on the campaign trail covering hillary clinton, and brianna commentator was this acknowledgment that fired her up with those comments coming from the possible next speaker of the house in kevin mccarthy. >> yes, no doubt about it, wolf. they have been saying that it is exactly what has been going on, when everybody thought that clinton was unbeatable, and we we, meaning republicans put together the select benghazi number, and the numbers have been dropping. attributing the committee drop to the overall numbers it appears ash and the trustworthiness numbers when it comes to hillary clinton, because she has seen the numbers drop, and although a lot of people would say it is because of the e-mail controversy, but going into the hearing where she will testify october 22nd, wolf, she and the campaign are seeing a lot of opportunity from what many mccarthy said. >> and e brianna, even a lot of republicans said that what he said is a political gift in advance of the october 22nd seshl hearing on benghazi. and how is this likely to play out? >

let's do that with cnn senior political correspondent brianna keilar live in washington, digging deep into the numbers. what do you see, my friend? >> looking at all of those polls, what all americans would think, hillary clinton, her favorable rating at this point, 46%. that is up from 44% in august. her unfavorable at 50%. that is down from 53% in august. so the glass half full here is she's making progress. the glass half empty is she's still under water when it comes to her favorable/unfavorable. among democratic voters, democratic leaning voter as well, when asked which democratic candidate do you trust most to handle a myriad of issues, hillary clinton besting bernie sanders by a lot here. certainly let's look at foreign policy, for instance. this is an issue that republicans are going to make a big issue of, come the general election, especially if clinton is the no, ma'amfy. she's heading into this week where she's talking about foreign policy. she'll be testifying before the benghazi committee. she's at 62% of democratic leaning democratic voters saying she is the one they tr

senior political correspondent brianna keilar is there. what are you seeing? >> hi, wolf. behind me, you see bernie sanders surrounded by certainly a lot of folks here who have been putting on the debate and are explaining to him the logistics of where the moderators are going to be. and you also see a number of his aides with him and answering questions that he may have about just the sort of details about how this debate is going to go. i will tell you, as we do wait to see whether or not hillary clinton herself is going to be doing a similar walk-through that we've seen bernie sanders do, that we've seen jim webb do. it's interesting that it seems like her team isn't necessarily trying to even really manage those expectations, as we see so often in debates where you see aides downplaying how good someone is going to be. she, by far, has the most experience when it comes to debates of this level. she's done more than two dozen debates, most on a national stage, like this one. they've all been very high profile from the time when she was first running for senate in 2000.

let's bring in our correspondent e brianna keilar and looking at the poll numbers and how it looks with biden running and without biden running. >> it is fascinating, wolf, because these are democrats, and 45% of them say they want hillary clinton to be the nominee, and that is with biden in the race. you can see that he is registering 18% there, and if you take him out of the race, and hillary clinton gets an 11 -- 11-point boost, and that is very significant, and the boost is hers and not bernie sanders. many say that they want sanders to be a nominee, and if you take biden out, he gets a bump of only o4%. and another fascinating thing is that the democratic voters were asked, should joe biden run for president, and is there an appetite for him to run, and 47% said yes, and 49% said no, so you can see that he is underwater there, and this is within the margin of error and goes the show you that, wolf, not an overwhelming push for him to get in. >> and jeff zeleny is saying that the vice president will meet tonight with the top advisers presumably, because he has to make the decision w

brianna keilar is at that rally, joins you now. she's still working off the momentum she had from last night's debate. what is she doing? >> she's courting some of the key constituencies in this swing state of nevada. union members and hispanics. her first stop today was at a trade union event where she picked up the endorsement of this trade union, key here in nevada. then she made an unexpected stop at a well known place serving mexican, ice cream and other treats. she tries to court this hispanic voter constituency here in nevada. she did talk about joe biden. this is interesting. she was asked about this. she said he needs to make the decision that's best for him and his family. anderson. >> in this campaign rally later this hour, what should we expect? >> this is going to be a much bigger event than the one at the strait trade union we're expecting. so this is going to be an event where she's giving, we would expect, her main sort of stump speech, trying to build on some of that enthusiasm from the debate. and this is really j

senior -- our senior political correspondent brianna keilar joins us to break down the numbers. >> reporter: the big question mark right now is whether joe biden, the vice president s going it get into the race or not. take a look at what this poll shows us. if he is in the race or if he isn't, hillary clinton at 45% of support from democrats and democratic hi democratic-leaning voters. if biden decides not to run, she gets bumped up 11 points. that's quite a hop right there. bernie sanders at 29%. he only bumps up 4% if joe biden is not in the race. the advantage really to hillary clinton there. now, take a look at -- take a look at whether voters even want joe biden to get into the race. this is pretty fascinating, especially in light of the fact that hillary clinton didn't get that big bump from her solid debate performance. you have less democratic voters, check this out, saying they want joe biden to run for president, than you have saying you don't. he's sort of under water on this desire to get into the race. this is something that has changed just here in the last couple of months.
