our scott broom is live in annapolis with more. scott? >> reporter: and the main thing on the plate here in a special session is whether or not to clear up the way for big time vegas-style gambling just outside the d.c. line. the gambling issue is a big distraction. today, the legislature is backing in on the unusual special session to try to put that issue to rest. but the forces for it are powerful. they are opposed to the potential new competition from a site in prince george's county. the two county executives stood side by side before one hearing in a point counter point. >> it will take add least a 40% cut away from the county if we do that. >> and that's what they are not considering that they will attract people, being in that market. it'll attract people from around the world. >> they will need to cut them from existing casinos to allow more vegas-style statewide to sweeten their deal. the sweetener for voters in all of this, perhaps as much as half a billion dollars a year in new revenue for schools. but they remain opposed. >>

scott broom is outside the state house in annapolis with the very latest. okay. what is going on, scott. >> right now, there's serious debate underway to amend this bill all kinds of ways. all kinds of special interests trying to get on board. here's one of the amendments that just passed. it will allow slot machines into vfw and american legion halls all around maryland. an unexpected further expansion of gambling, but that is the price that leaders are going to get what they want, which is a vegas style casino, preferably at national harbor. live table games, and a big tax break for the owners of the five other casinos to compensate them for all the new competition for prince georges. the deal is projected to bring hundreds of millions more, and create thousands of new jobs, but as you can see from the debate going on right now, the outcome is by no means a done deal. one thing that is a lot closer to being a done deal is that pit bull bill that you may have heard about, the house just voted on that bill. they have passed it through. the bill makes dog owners l

our scott broom is live in annapolis monitoring it all. scotty? >> reporter: well, in fact the senators are streaming in right now for a 6:00 session. they are widely expected to push this gambling bill through. so that's just another step in the direction of a dramatic expansion of gambling in maryland. they will then kick it on to the house of delegates, a much more fractured body on this issue where there are a lot higher hurdles for gambling next week. the senate bill will clear the way to build a casino at national harbor in prince george's county and also legalize live table games like blackjack and craps statewide resulting in vegas style casinos ranging another $2 million for schools. but the bill in some cases pits county against county. anne arundel for instance is opposed fearing new competition from national harbor and prince george's county would hurt the new maryland live casino at anne arundel mills. those divisions are most sharp in the house of delegates where republicans are taking shots for rush the bill through. >> we have real

. >> reporter: i'm scott broom at capitol hill where police today are following a number of leads in the disturbing attack against 29-year-old thomas maslin. what's so upsetting about what happened to maslin is how long he may have been injured before anyone found him. according to a police report, maslin was discovered by a passer-by on this porch in the 700 block of north carolina avenue at 8:30 in the morning saturday so badly beaten and incoherent rescuers thought he was having a seizure. he was just a few blocks from home. according to a police report, maslin was last seen at the tune in bar and restaurant on pennsylvania avenue. it was 12:45 a.m. police don't know what happened after that, but clues include a neighbor who reported shouting near where maslin was found between 3:30 and 4 a.m., five hours before he was discovered on the porch. meanwhile maslin's wife reported his credit card may have been used about 5 p.m. the next day. scott broom, 9 news now. >>> the smithsonian's hirshhorn gallery was evacuated around 3:00 this afternoon after reports of gunshots inside. thankf

our scott broom is joining us live from our mobile newsroom in pensacola beach, florida. scott? >> reporter: jc, it's so mobile, i'm still behind the wheel right now. let me show you some of the pictures we're seeing in pensacola beach which is experiencing tropical storm conditions right now. there's been a lot of minor street flooding and a significant amount of wind here in pensacola beach. we're here on the western most point of the florida panhandle. we're here because there are so many evacuees coming into pensacola beach from new orleans and mobile and other places to the west of us. so even though we have tropical storm conditions here, people are coming here from new orleans because they figure a glancing blow from isaac is a whole lot better than getting hit by the re thing. if you have a moment, we'll give this a try. i'm going to try to give you a view outside my vehicle here from the dashboard camera. right now the sun is out and the wind is blowing about 25, 30 miles an hour. we've had some very heavy rain squalls come through here and a couple of inches of rain si

scott broom, where we are learning more about 22-year-old shevon phillips. scott. >> reporter: well, this case is being treated as a homicide by investigators. phillips was last seen on video dropping one of her beloved children off at a daycare center and after that, investigators aren't exactly sure what happened. >> this is shevon phillips, age 22, a devoted mom to two kids. devotion you can see as she drops one of her children off at a northeast washington daycare center on july 30. these fleeting glimpses are the last known sightings of shevon before she simply vanished. friends immediately took to facebook to spread the word, but the site devoted to finding her has sadly morphed into an online memorial. police in prince georges county announced monday that a body found dumped near a creek bed off bremer drive august 1 was shevon. investigators are offering little information on the case. they are still waiting for an autopsy to confirm a cause of death. the case is being investigated as a homicide. shevon just completed training at a nursing school and
