[applause] mayor dyer: thank you so much. that means a lot. two weeks ago today on june the 12th, that was the most difficult day in the history of the city of orlando, but today i could not be more proud of our community and how it responded. we've not been defined by hate-filled act of a radical killer but rather by our collective response of love, compassion, and unity. we are orlando united. on behalf of everybody in orlando, all of our residents, all of our families, i want to start out by saying thank you to all of you. thank you to all of my fellow mayors. thank you to each of the residents of each of your cities. everybody knows that orlando is a place to go and have fun. but when we needed most, your cities came to orlando's aid. you had our back and unequivocally these have been the worst two weeks in orlando's history and i can't tell you how much it meant to us to feel your thisand your support after unimaginable tragedy. and i can't tell you how much it meant to see your landmarks, bridges and buildings lit up in

also with us today, are florida governor rick scott and orlando mayor, buddy dyer. i would like to thank all of my partners standing here today and many others who came from all over the nation who are assisting us from investigating the terrible attack on our community. the level of partnership and cooperation is phenomenal and in the last several days, has been completely overwhelming. we continue to stand shoulder to shoulder and work together to investigate the horrific attack. we wanted to take time and update on what we are doing and ask for your help in certain areas of the investigation. because it is it an ongoing investigation, there is still much i cannot share with you. i would ask for your patience, and when i tell you that there are certain things i can't discuss at this time. we are covering many leads and we want to make sure we share information, and it is timely and accurate. we owe it to the victims and families and loved ones and the community to bear witness with finite accuracy. the fbi office victim assistance rapid deployment team is working

orlando mayor buddy dyer said the gunman used an assault rifle in the shooting. police saying it was an ar-15. mateen was also armed with a handgun. the gunfire began around 2:00 this morning local time and a hostage situation soon unfolded from there. about three hours later s.w.a.t. teams stormed the nightclub and a shooting ensued. mateen was killed by police gunfire. the fbi says it will be investigating this as an act of domestic terror. let's turn back now to nbc news justice correspondent pete williams. a lot of people around the country just waking up to this news out west perhaps. what more are you hearing about the shooter who you've learned is omar mateen? >> reporter: omar mir mateen, 29 years old, originally born in new york and lived in florida near his parents, had been married, we believe had a son. i think he's divorced. we don't know whether he's remarried. no criminal record that we know security guard. one question obviously will be where did he get the weapons, and we're told that that process of tracing the weapons hasn't started yet. i thin

. >> reporter: orlando's mayor buddy dyer updating us on the evidence and learning more about the shooter, 29-year-old omar mateen. their first priority is identifying the victims and notifying family. >> we don't really count the shooter as a victim. >> reporter: investigators worked through the night to confirm i.d.s of 48 of the 49 victims. a grueling task for investigate are tos and a wait for loved one. mateen pledged his allegiance to isis after storming in to pulse with rifle. he held hostages in the bathroom. officers running in with bomb vests held mateen and used explosives to blow a hole through the wall. >> the explosive did not penetrate the wall completely. we used our armored vehicle, bear cat armored vehicle to punch a hole in that wall and there is a hole in the wall about two feet off the ground and about two or three feet wide. we were able to rescue dozens and dozens of people. >> mateen came through that hole as well dying with the mpolice n a shootout afterwards. >> reporter: and the fbi tells us they did find a third gun inside the shooter's car and he remained calm

. >> also on the scene this morning, the mayor of orlando, buddy dyer. we spoke with him moments ago as well. >> tonight, our community witnessed or experienced a very horrific crime. many lives were lost and many many individuals were impacted. we had a coordinated effort among our law enforcement personnel among a number of counties in a hostage situation that actually probably saved dozens of lives. so thank you to the men and women of the orlando police department and the supporting agencies. the individual is not from our community. he traveled here to commit his crime. i can't say more than the fbi did at this point. they're in charge of that aspect of the investigation. so, i don't want to preempt anything on that. i think they confirmed that they believe he acted alone and independent. we don't know whether he randomly chose the club or chose it for a specific purpose. it's a stand-alone club with a parking lot. so one thought is that it was more accessible than some of the club that would be downtown or more downtown. so we just don't have enoug

okay, well, right now, the orlando mayor, buddy dyer, is now about to speak. let's listen in. >> the fbi's office of victim assistance and the american red cross have assembled 35 different agencies on-site to assess these victims and their families. services that the family assistance center range from grief counseling to financial assistance to obtaining visas to something that wouldn't have occurred to anybody, recoverying the deceased cars and transferring title. we can't thank these organizations enough for their tireless efforts in these situations, and i want to personally thank them right now. [ applause ] >> over the past two days since we've opened the center, 94 families, 94 families and 256 individuals have visited us for assistance. some of the people come here, thinking they need only one or two resources. but once they see the variety, they leave with so much more. just a few of the examples. over 200 free airline tickets have been provided to grieving families to reunite them with their loved ones. so far, 85 compensation claims have been filed
