lgbt kids are facing an epidemic of bullying in our schools.nearly 75% of lgbt students say they have been verbally harassed at school. more than 30% report missing a day of school in the last month because they felt unsafe. sometimes kids cannot endure the taunting. these boys, 11 years old 13 15 committed suicide because they were harassed relentlessly. and they are just three of the many tragic cases and in case after case, the parents begged the schools to do something only to be ignored. our laws failed these children, but we can change that. we have come very far on this issue as a body. we passed enda which protects lgbt adults, but this is about children. it's our job as adults, not just as senators, to protect children. think about the lgbt people you know your friends staff family. now imagine them as children just beginning to discover who they are but doing so in the face of taunts and intimidation. you can't get a good education if you dread going to school. my amendment just says that schools would have to listen when a parent say

now, there are people who will say what can you do to stop bullying? kids will be kids, boys will be boys. i don't think that's right. because what we're seeing in our schools today is not just teasing, it's not playground behavior. what we are seeing is more than just bullying. we're seeing discrimination. let me explain what i mean. if a black child was referred to by a racial slur at school, would we say kids will be kids? if a jewish student got beat up because he wore a yarmulke to school would we wave it off and say boys will be boys? if a shop teacher told a female teacher she didn't belong in his class, would we be fine if the school just looked the other way? no we wouldn't. in fact, there are federal civil rights laws that are specifically designed to stop this kind of conduct. but if a gay child is relentlessly harassed by his classmates if a principal tells a girl she can't go to her senior prom because she wants to bring another girl as her date, or if a school just stands by as teachers students and other administrators refer to a transge

if we don't want to be bullied by the european union we can't continue the way they treat us we can'tt that and many were willing to take a chance of maybe going out of the euro zone even though it had to do more with i think national pride and nastalga in the 90s when the drakma and economy was doing well. some people told me that it's not the prime minister's fault, that he was probably pressured in doing that that he was probably blackmailed to accept all of these conditions so they are willing still to give him a chance but certainly there is a feel of betrayal that was not there last week. i think then the prime minister will have to be very convincing to all of these people. one woman i spoke to last week had voted yes, her husband voted no and i spoke to her this morning and said last week after the results came out you said you hoped you were so so wrong and then she said well today i still hope i was wrong at the time but it turns out i was right and turns out the no vote of my husband became a yes vote and now i have very mixed feelings about all this so people are confused

unawareness can take the form of bullying.rporate america who do not realize that they are being bullies. i really encourage you to make sure that the diversity of all of you are heard by each other letting people help you, help themselves, being kind to yourself, being kind to others. being open is important. that leads me to my third one which is about openness and inclusivity. talent is everywhere. i hold an image in my head about this. i was lucky to go to afghanistan, filled with so much entrepreneurial talent. one of the people who was helping us with security when we were there told us that when he landed, he looked out the window and would see a little boy run out of his house and lay on the roof. he wondered if the boy was excited about the planes, why was he doing that. one day he was near his home and he went to visit. the boy was running out of the house to lie on top of the roof to protect his solar panel from cracking. i just think about him because i think about what he would want and what he needed, and to help

i worked so hard and i don't want to rent to bully tenants. i was threatened by the bully tenants and lost $365,000. my name is christie. a small property owner in san francisco. i am here today to oppose the rent amendment 150646. the first part of this amendment requests landlord after certain vacancis to set new base rent. this presents a big disadvantage to homeowners who want to rent units or their property after a long period of time. according to sfgate, the rental price in san francisco raised 10.6% compared to the national average of 3% in 2013. if this ordinance is passed those homeowners will be less motivated to rent out their property. therefore, decreasing the number of properties for the rent in san francisco, a city with an increased population is really bad. okay? secondly, i strongly

some are being so horribly hurt by bullying. they are killing themselves. the question seems to me is this something the federal government is in the best position to address. why do you want to see federal law on this? >> well, this has become sort of epidemic. today, i gave a speech on the floor and showed the pictures of three boys, a 15-year-old, 13-year-old, and 11-year-old who committed suicide because they were being bullied, harassed at school. 30% of lgbt students reported that they've missed a day of school in the last 30 days because they were afraid. and it's hard to learn when you're -- when you dread going to school. we're now taking up an education bill on the floor of the senate. i have a bill, the student nondiscrimination act that would give lgbt kids certain rights that are already extended to kids on -- to students on the basis of their race their gender their country of national origin, if they have disabilities. all this would do is simply give lgbt kids who are the target of so much of this bullying that it would give them some rights
