air quality not great and two fires burning in the region.not going to help air quality there either. outside right now, though, skies are clear. you can see the crescent moon here from the mount vaca cam and temperatures in the 60s areawide and we are still on the warm side of average. however these temperatures are running slightly cooler than the same time yesterday and our temperatures later today will be doing the same. so clear and warm start, still warm, to hot today. and much cooler, as we make our way past midweek. and high pressure remains in place. and a warm dry air mass. that's not great for fire fighting conditions and it is going to keep us hot, especially inland, and we may begin to see a little bit of cooling along the coast today. watch what happens when i advance the future cast into this afternoon. we start to see the marine layer enhancing just a bit. this will eventually, toward the second half of the week, start to trigger the on-shore flow. which helps to keep us mild around here. but for right now, any cooling we see

the fires burned through 2200 acres, up to 10% containment this morning. one home and six out buildings have been destroyed. bob redell is out there and will have an update later this morning. as we mentioned yesterday, there were a lot of reenforcements needed to get to this point today. the number of firefighters went from 350 to 500 on the front lines, bringing in tankers and choppers as they did more air drops and used more fire retardant. it appears to have calmed the spread of the fire. >> a very fierce fire season. firefighters say it's only intensified in the past few months. we spoke to one firefighter who battled four different fires back-to-back. >> the intensity of the fires with so much fuel to burn that, you know, the sob bran know fire, we were in the fog. it was so dry. after 15 days you need a break. >> these guys are working hard. firefighters usually work 24 hours on the fire lines and then have the next 24 hours off. >> no doubt they have very appreciative families and communities they're protecting. stay with us for continuing coverage

the big story is the fire in santa cruz that is burning. we have a reporter on the scene, but, first, the weather and how it could impact the firefighters. >> great question. i will show you what they are dealing with going forward. i. look in the santa cruz mountains it is all about elevation 5,700 it is 56. but at the coast it is 78. the winds are light during the day. so, like yesterday you are going to see the mushroom cloud, and severe thunderstorm looking clouds. 90 today but look at the 70 over the weekend and in the 60s next week. when it is cooler, that means the winds are g going to be more ferocious, the catch 22. we have local roads closed because of the fire and c.h.p. is in charge of those. it is not impacting highway 17 but this is a fluid situation. mount behalfally is the closure at -- mount b. had bache, and little as we get more daylight it is visible for a last south bay drivers. we could see delay. not seeing it yet but there is the potential for that, later this morning. >> we have watch throughout the morning as the f
