mayor buttigieg: good morning, thank you for coming over. i will begin by saying jackson and i have been overwhelmed and delighted by the response this morning when i announce that i have filed an exploratory committee to run for president of the united states. it is time for a new generation of leadership in our country. we cannot nibble around the edges of a broken system. that there is no going back. that there is no again in the real world. we cannot rewind to 1950. or, for that matter, to 2010. i'm in my eighth year as mayor of south bend, indiana. it is a diverse and largely low income city, one on a terrific trajectory. we were dismissed as a dying community. we faced some of our toughest challenges together and have been able to get our city growing in a way that it has not and a half a century. the important thing i think people need to know about the story is we did not change our trajectory because i went around saying things like i'll loan can , orike i alone can fix it we are going to make our city great again. what we did was w

[applause] mayor buttigieg: that's freedom. democracy, i believe the future of our democracy has been called into question. is our democratic republic even democratic anymore? as we speak, workers and parents and children right here in the district of columbia are denied full representation in the house and senate. that is not democracy. it's not democracy when districts are drawn so politicians get to pick their voters instead of the other way around. [applause] cities are aeg: lot more democratic because they don't redraw city limits every 10 years. [laughter] maybe some mayors wish that they could. [laughter] i want speak to whether the strong people in or drawing people out, but it's an authentic community of interest. maybe is the last government that's functioning as a democracy. it's not a democracy of dollars can outvote people. with citizens are blocked from exercising their legitimate right to vote. so many great americans fought for democracy overseas. we have to be willing to defend it right here at home. [laughter] mayor buttigieg: i mean no disrespect to the united states congress. but that is a very different job. and i would argue that our country right now would be a better place if congress looked more like the community of american mayors and not the other way around. [applause] mayor buttigieg: are we really so sure that serving in that legislative body, crucially important though it is, is more weighty and more demanding than the experience of leading a city of any size as it faces its biggest opportunities and challenges? i doubt that. because we cannot keep doing what we've been doing, especially in washington. we need something completely different, and that just might mean sending a mayor to the white house. [applause] mayor buttigieg: many of you heard me tell stories about a -- of south bend, a diverse and largely low-income city that struggled for decades to recover from the destruction of the local auto industry in the 1960's. we saw times so tough that the national press called us dying as recently as 2011, the month i got into the race for mayor

buttigieg will have to get some fire with him in that.ll towns matter, yes, and we're talking about the presidential race right now and the middle of america doesn't usually vote democrat, and you have get urban voters out, too and you'll have to get a message that makes them more invigorated. >> if you look at that field and the field will get even larger. one thing is clear. these democrats believe that it's an open race, that all of these people are running for president means that they think they could not just win the primary or maybe not win the primary, but that they could beat donald trump, and that is one signal. another signal is if you look at that graphic of those people who are running for president, a lot of them don't look like the people who have been president of the united states since the founding of our country. the democrats are putting up candidates who are more diverse, who are women. they didn't get away from hillary clinton losing thinking, i guess women can't be president, instead, we're getting a record number o
