i was an experienced person on capitol hill when watergate came along. i had been there almost 10 years. i began with senator urban in 1964. when the committee was set up, i knew the ropes on capitol hill. i knew the procedures. i knew what you needed to do. just a simple thing like getting office space when you have a committee that's got over 100 staff members we put together in almost a month -- can you imagine putting a staff of 100 people together in a short as a month? the way the watergate committee was set up, it was the only committee in the congress -- in the senate that was looking into watergate. senator mike mansfield of montana knew that you couldn't have fragments here and there. he put all the authority in the senate watergate committee. he made senator urban the chair and senator baker of tennessee the cochair. that's one of the marvelous things about watergate. the two of them work together. they said we are going to make this work. we will not disagree about things in public, and they didn't. since watergate has succeeded like watergat
