our amy is talking to activists this morning, we're starting with jessica castro with what the president said and how our local leaders are reacting, jess. >> reporter: the new policy was announced this morning as you said on twitter. and take a look, the president sending out a series of tweets saying, quote, after consultation with the generals and military experts, the united states government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the u.s. military. our military must be focussed on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs. in the military would entail, thank you. transgender service members have been able to serve openly in the military since last year. when defense secretary ash carter ended the ban. there are between 2500 and 7,000 transgender service members on active duty and anywhere from 1500 to 4,000 in the reserves according to iran corporation study. and that same study determined allowing transgender people to serve openly would have only minimal impact on readiness and health care costs
