i am a cato groupie. i noticed the title has the word the republican it a word that i have been looking at for three years trying to get a handle on what the definition is. of course, there is always the common definitions that basically say, well it is not a monarchy. there are other definitions that go all the way to say, no, it requires a constitution. you have to have individual rights. i am shocked by the range of definitions that i found in them also shocked by the fact that nobody seems to have her when they about her public attempt to define it. i don't know if your book does, but my experience has been that people use the word republic all the time and make no attempt to define it. my question is how would you define what a republic is? >> that's a good a good question. i think that one of the challenges is that a republic is not -- a republic is almost the product of government. it is almost as if in democracy, monarchy, whatever that whatever that is the process. republic almost refers to the e

i'll talk more about the mission of the trade center at cato. our goal is to -- is to educate the public and policymakers about the benefits of free trade and free protection. that that was our goal i would have lost my job a long tile ago. so where do we stand about illuminating people about free trade. well is the public more aware about the benefits of free trait than last year or five years ago. if you ask the poll, you see people begrudgingly the acceptance that the united states needs to be engaged in the global economy but you also see reticence, reluctance, skepticism about the reluctance of trade on jobs in particular. let's look at the political dialogue. well that is still fairly partisan. republicans accept freer trade representing business interested. not necessarily free trade but pro-trade, pro-expert. democrats tend to be guided by their labor and environmental and anti-corporate interests are opposed to trade. but interestingly i would say more so than any of the time in my 14 years at cato prospect are greater at any time in th

you know i refer to the work of cato who has written about this. the republicans are not that with willing to embrace the idea so it is something that we will need to you know. continue to push for. maybe i will enon a more optimistic note. directly with work i do think that it will turn and many republicans will start to see that even from a pure political calculus that being an immigrant does not necessarily work. so again. i am not optimistic by the run i this i that the fact that most of us will recognize that our parents or grand parent contribute today this country is a message that resonates with most people so. i will enby saying that the could not mist. i do think that part of the reflects the labor market at any one time. labor mark let get more secure in jobs they will be more concern about the competition for their jobs. there you have it [applause] on the table on your way out there. is a a priorities for 114th congress. essays from anybody on the panel. and i encouraging you to take one on the way out i encouraging you to take one. ap
