south vanness runs from south of market to cesar chavez street. originally residential after the 1906 earthquake it was used as a fire break. many car dealerships and businesses exist on vanness today with expansion of bus lanes. originally marlet street was named after james vanness, seventh mayor of san francisco from 1855 to 1856. vanness heavy are streets in santa cruz, los angeles and fresno in his honor. in 1915 streetcars started the opening of the expo. in 1950s it was removed and replaced by a tree-lined median. it was part of the central freeway from bayshore to hayes valley. it is part of uses 101. it was damaged during the 1989 earthquake. in 1992 the elevator part of the roadway was removed. it was developed into a surface boulevard. today the vanness bus rapid transit project is to have designated bus lanes service from mission. it will display the history of the city. van ness avenue. >> first let me acknowledge paul we left outside. he is under the tent, which is good. he is an ambassador. cudos he is amazing. cesar chavez, san dolores, where to working for farmworkers and the united farm workers in california were dealing with pesticides that were deforming children. we had a need to save some remnants of scenic rivers and lbj got deeply involved. so we now have areas that are designated red, wild and scenic rivers. but the key figure on all of this becomes william moe douglas from the supreme court. and he has most to do with the work maya's doing in the sense that douglas at the supreme court today, this is all pre environmental protection agency. the epa is not created till 1970. so in the sixties, people are demanding an epa, a regulatory and that can call balls and strikes in that can prosecute cute polluters and bill douglas from the supreme court who wrote a book called farewell to texas, because he thought all of the natural beauty spots were being mauled and destroyed in texas. but douglas would do protest hikes. he'd hike 186 miles from washington, dc and maryland to save the seno canal. he saved it. he hiked in the washington peninsula to save roads from not being built along th

she questioned -- this is an era where people had cesar chavez out -- and out in the san joaquin valley. out in california and the imperial valley, people were getting sick from these pesticides. mexican americans, children being deformed, cancer rates skyhigh. i get environmental justice is being born, but douglas grew up in yakima washington and he could not walk when he was young. he got eight crippling polio like condition, doctors thought he would not walk. he started walking and walking and strengthening his legs and he became one of our country's most intrepid mountain climbers. in fact in 1951 as supreme court justice he went to the himalayan's and wrote a book about it. about his hiking of the mountains there, but in the u.s. he would take peaks, bag them places like mount adams. in mount baker. in the pacific northwest. he became the big -- a big lover of central oregon and today that whole bend oregon outdoor recreation culture as -- has billed douglas's fingerprints everywhere you go around there. he went to whitman college in walla walla washington, a small school out there

we're working on the facility, cesar chavez. their yard will be next to the public works yard and the yard down in millbrae. and from a workload point of view, master plan was interesting for us in that we get to be involved in the vision of the project, making sure it integrates with the community and then we get to build it out phase after phase over decades so that's a lot of great work for the studio. green infrastructure, the sfpuc started a pilot program quite some time ago now and they were implementing stormwater bioswales and rain gardens within each supervisorial district. it's a common practice before it was a pilot practice. with we did a project along sunset boulevard because it used to be dunes and it's sand. it's perfect for infiltrating stormwater into the aquifer. it doesn't go down a pipe but straight through the sand. that's a great part of the work ask you can -- you can see have lens is a street on the right. the soil was good for infiltration in that section. they integrated storm drain and taking advantage

south vanness runs from south of market to cesar chavez street.lly residential after the 1906 earthquake it was used as a fire break. many car dealerships and businesses exist on vanness today with expansion of bus lanes. originally marlet street was named after james vanness, seventh mayor of san francisco from 1855 to 1856. vanness heavy are streets in santa cruz, los angeles and fresno in his honor. in 1915 streetcars started the opening of the expo. in 1950s it was removed and replaced by a tree-lined median. it was part of the central freeway from bayshore to hayes valley. it is part of uses 101. it was damaged during the 1989 earthquake. in 1992 the elevator part of the roadway was removed. it was developed into a surface boulevard. today the vanness bus rapid transit project is to have designated bus lanes service from mission. it will display the history of the city. the city. is r. >>> my name is debra alvarez rodriguez. i'm the deputy director in san francisco. my background is one in which i have spent the entirety of my life committed

cesar chavez, san dolores, where to working for farmworkers and the united farm workers in california were dealing with pesticides that were deforming children. we had a need to save some remnants of scenic rivers and lbj got deeply involved. so we now have areas that are designated red, wild and scenic rivers. but the key figure on all of this becomes william moe douglas from the supreme court. and he has most to do with the work maya's doing in the sense that douglas at the supreme court today, this is all pre environmental protection agency. the epa is not created till 1970. so in the sixties, people are demanding an epa, a regulatory and that can call balls and strikes in that can prosecute cute polluters and bill douglas from the supreme court who wrote a book called farewell to texas, because he thought all of the natural beauty spots were being mauled and destroyed in texas. but douglas would do protest hikes. he'd hike 186 miles from washington, dc and maryland to save the seno canal. he saved it. he hiked in the washington peninsula to save roads from not being built along th
