burnett watching conditions in chatham. a.j.? >> yeah, the storm has been very slow to kind of ramp up here in chatham. we have had winds gusting up to about 25 miles per hour. and the surf has certainly kicked up quite a bit. we're having trouble showing it to you right now, because, obviously, the sun is not up but with those winds, just think about how slowly this has ramped up. it's probably going to be equally as slow to back off. so this storm may sit south of cape cod. not only wind and tree damage, but also the potential for a lot of coastal beach erosion. because the storm will be sticking around so long. we'll keep monitoring things in a.j. burnett, wcvb, newscenter 5. >> westport on the south coast, no rain. seas are starting to build. we've been watching them build. the beaches are closed. also to the east of us over in new bedford, those beaches closed early yesterday. there is a major concern of dangerous rip currents along the coast, not to mention an increasing surf that we're seeing here. officials keeping the ey

this is chatham. hermine is moving in by the end of this holiday weekend, bringing winds and rough seas and maybe beach erosion. the rain is expected to move in a bit later this afternoon. good morning and thank you for joining us. waves, they will be churning today, and cindy is watching all of this. what can we expect? >> we're seeing the clouds right now in boston. the camera is shaking a bit. the strongest winds right now are on parts of the south coast, and the cape of the islands and nantucket, gusting at 30 miles per hour. but this storm is still far away, it is nearly 500 miles to the south, but the stronger winds extend out a good distance from the storm, and we are across the area. the winds are going to increase as the storm inches throughout the day, you can see the clouds. the rain is nearby, it will take longer for that rain to move in. but the winds pick up. and by this afternoon and this evening, the winds will be gusting between 40 and 50 miles per hour down along the south coast, the

we are here at the chatham fish pier. what they are saying is that, again, these high winds and the big waves, of course, could make for very dangerous situations for swimmers and surfers, but they are also dangerous situations for boaters as well, and in fact we were there yesterday as the crew with the coast guard boarded one of their boats and was told to check these wind conditions, because, again, the one is really causing all of those waves to whip around. they are asking poet boaters to secure their boats and even yet get them out of the water and they say if you plan to head out on the water today, make sure that you are prepared. equipment and sound and life jackets and if the weather will be too much for your boat and you don't need to go out, if it is unnecessary, don't go out. >> reporter: that is what we are saying. please do not put yourself in any kind of dangerous situation if you don't have to. don't go out on the water if you don't have to. they are on standby and ready to work with any emergency situati
