they had the first light ship in chesapeake bay in 1820. here you see the coast guard ship number 612. it is dangerous duty. this is off the nantucket shoals of massachusetts. they were stationed by the rocks and the heavy seas. that was very dangerous. but lighthouse ships had the duty of warning ships away from dangerous territory so they had to be in the dangerous territory. it was dangerous duty and the crews were skilled. in 1939, the lighthouse service was absorbed by the coast guard. here you can see a coast guardsmen manning the lighthouse, hopefully he is off duty there. [laughter] mark: summoner kimball, a civilian, he headed the u.s. lifesaving service all the way through world war i. he was one of the few civilian chiefs of the u.s. revenue marine. most were revenue cutter officers. joshua james was a keeper of a lifesaving station. u.s. lifesaving service at hull, massachussetts. he was in that service. look at the medals he won after more than 40 years. he died on duty at the age of 75. how he died was -- he was losing life se

the waters of the chesapeake bay still are on the warm side. we'll see numbers drop a few degrees more but that's about it. we've gotten cloud cover. we won't see rain any time soon. here's what we're looking at. look at the clouds. this is becoming a classic area of low pressure. what you see here is the low level circulation and then the outer flout flow of these cirrus clouds coming overhead. you'll see the thicker clouds coming up to our area. don't expect to see much in the way of sunshine. this system will move our way but it will have a hard time getting here. i've been talking about this area of high pressure that we've had for the last two weeks sitting over the region. that's one reason why we've been so dry. that will move off just a bit but, again, it will be strong enough, we'll get the northeasterly flow which we've had for the bester part of two weeks. we'll see the area move up the coast but the rain can't get into the area of high pressure and that means good stuff for the weekend. it's a tough forecast. could it still come in?

then it will weaken, that's what the forecast calls for, but takes it into chesapeake bay, weakening to a category 1 hurricane. the question is does this make the turn further northward. we're still in the blue zone. or does it make the turn out to sea. regardless of what the track is going to be, even if it's off to the south, we're in the northeastern side of the storm. that will mean prolonged onshore flow, rain, wind, and more exacerbated near the coast, potential coastal flooding at the times of high tide. so beach erosion will be on going. we have to get through another system before that happens as you'll see in the forecast. 79, 68 today. last time you'll see 70 for a while. the rainfall 1-1/4 inches. more coming tomorrow. 69 now. north wind will cool us down. a couple of breaks in the cloud cover. still very humid. we're 70s to 80s for highs. most of the area mid 70s to the north and west. a cold front has moved to the east, already 60s moving into the area from the north and west. tomorrow morning it will be in the low to middle 50s. as the wind out of the north will become
