nine people killed in this bus crash on i-5 west of chico. the bus was filled with students on a college tour. andria borba is on the scene in orland tonight. >> reporter: one of the things that likely made the crash much worse, there is not a center divide made of concrete on this stretch of i-5. there are only oleander bushes separating the lanes. the bus from los angeles was headed northbound on i-5 when a big rig with two trailers, a fedex truck crossed over the median. clipped one car and hit the bus head on. we want to show you pictures of the aftermath of this crash. here is a look of the photos posted after the wreck. there is still smoke billowing from the bus. firefighters are on scene putting out the fire. now, the bus completely gutted. just a charred skeleton left. and emergency workers helped a wounded passenger out of the transport bus trying to get them to the hospital. now, as we said, at this point, nine people have been killed including the fedex driver, the bus driver, and seven other people on the bus. that bus coming fro

the crash occurred on interstate 5 west of chico. it is four hours short of their destination. a college previewhumboldtnd at humboldt state university in air kay do on the coast. in air -- -- arcada on the coast. >> seconds after a truck collided with a bus full of high school students, calls to 9-1-1 began flooding in. >> just saw a very, very large explosion and fireball. >> 43 students were heading to humboldt state for a college visit on thursday afternoon when the fed ex rossed the crossed the median. 10 people were killed in the fiery crash. five students, both drivers and three chaperons on the bus. 18-year-old harley hoit was doing homework when the accident happened. >> people were screaming and there was all of this commotion. i said what? and looked up. the bus driver slams on the brakes and it is like a loud screeching noise and i will never forget it. within a split second, boom, smoke was filling the bus. the fed ex truck was on fire. >> hoit has been reunited with his family. 18-year-old miles hill of mount washington remains hospitalized with serious burns and

there were 34 taken to bay area hospital from red bluff to chico. officials are trying to figure out why that fed ex truck veered off the road. they believe i5 in both directions will be shut down until tomorrow morning. i'm richard horton now back to you. >> when you look at that bus behind you it's remarkable how only nine people were killed. do you know how those students were able to escape. we saw earlier how that bus was engulfed in flames. >> they would have had to go through some of the back windows. chp is still trying to figure out and get all their stories lined -p up. many people had bumps, bruises and scrape so they're at the hospital. and the front of the big rig it's completely gone. so when you say that, it's true it's hard to believe that only nine people died. >> it looks like it's a long straight roadway there and somehow this fed ex driver veered off right into the path of the bus. >> reporter: yeah i was asking them if maybe a car cut the big rig off or something like that. at this point they don't know they're trying to figure
