november 6th, another republican in the race, chris mcdaniel received 140,000 votes.ose votes, cindy hyde-smith still had an 8,000 vote edge over mike espy. he needs higher democratic turnout but also needs republicans, more republicans than november 6th to come over, cross-over, vote for him, as well as some chris mcdaniel voters to not show up. when you look at the numbers, over in jones county where chris mcdaniel is from, own november 6th, each of the candidates got a third of the vote. if you look at that tomorrow night, the question is are those chris mcdaniel voters, that third, are they going to cindy hyde-smith, does she win the county 2-1, or does espy have a shot at higher black democratic turnout and comes neck in neck in that county. it is one of the counties we're going to be looking at tomorrow night. >> democrats hope this will be alabama. they hope cindy hyde-smith will be roy moore. roy moore had serious allegations. >> look, this is what i'll say about my beloved party. if they hoped this was going to be alabama, they should have invested in it as i

can you imagine if the republicans had nominated chris mcdaniel, the wild eyed state senator with tons of baggage? this tells us something. that was a losable race. by choosing somebody who was more broadly acceptable and more of a main stream candidate, they, republicans, held on to a seat i guarantee if they would have nominated chris mcdaniel, same guy that tried to take out thad cochran, mike espy could have won. republicans dodged a bullet. >> dana: what do democrats think, they came close in florida, close in georgia, closer in texas and now mississippi, alabama. do democrats have a path to start notching some wins in these southern states? >> well, i think the question is this. do they have the candidates? and what are these folks like? mike espy did so well. he's a centrist moderate democrat. he represented the clinton democrat back when that meant moderate southern democrat back in the first iteration of clintonism. mike espy was that guy. he was someone who didn't frighten suburbanites. he wasn't talking ab medicare of all. only 5% of americans said their number one priority

the third candidate is chris mcdaniel. he's a tea partier. individuals support this type of politics. as a result of that this is a way to appeal to that base, to get them to move over to support her candidacy, which could be enough to put her over the top. >> ashton, as i was watching the senator last night, the first extended bit i've seen of her really, i thought to myself this is a united states senator how exactly did she end up here? what is the back story of how she ended up being the u.s. senator? >> well, first of all i will say i have talked to mcdaniel supporters who actually after those videos were actually even more upset who said originally they were going to vote for her after november 6th, but then they decided they couldn't do it after those videos came out. there are some who were turned away because of that. >> that's interesting. >> as far as how she came to this, when senator cochran stepped down governor brian appointed her. she served as the commissioner of agriculture and commerce in the state. governor brian appointed

the other major republican candidate, chris mcdaniel, had a good base of support, he's run before in mississippi. but at the same time republicans are looking down at mississippi even from within mississippi saying that this is a warning sign. no matter what happens tonight, obviously, if the democrat wins, it's more than a warning sign. but even the fact that we're here, it's a warning sign. having said that, chris, democrats i'm talking to tonight, they say they don't think they're going to get to the finish line. they are trying to play the same playbook that they did in alabama, but note that that the demographics there are very, very different, even though it might seem from new york and washington like there are more similarities than there are. >> even though hyde-smith should win this, it didn't stop trump from coming down there, going all-in on this, and making a play that i think has to be called out. him saying mike espy doesn't fit in. you tell me if we have the sound. listen to what the president said. >> cindy's far-left opponent, he's far left. oh, he's out there. how
