joining me now is maryland congressman chris van hollen.the chairman of the dccc and assistant to house speaker nancy pelosi. congressman, congratulations. >> ed, it's great to be with you on this historic day. >> it certainly is. you were up in that room. it had to be quite a feeling to see that unfold and to have this actually happen. of course, the republicans are saying it's armageddon and john mccain says there will be no cooperation. what's the memo say on your desk to the people who are running for office on the democratic ticket? >> well, two things are going to happen immediately. the first of all, the american people are going to see right away that they were misled, and that they were fed a bunch of fear mongering scare tactics, because the president just signed the bill and i don't see any death panels popping up, do you? the world is still here. it's not armageddon. they have a huge credibility gap on the other side because their story is one that has been fed by the insurance industry that has spent millions and millions and d

he's with the democrats' chief political strategist congressman chris van hollen of maryland. congressman clyburn before we talk about this do you have the votes, what about these demonstrators yesterday? have you seen anything like this in recent times? >> no, not in recent times. thank you so much for having us. the last time i saw anything like that was back in 1960. i celebrated a week ago the 50th anniversary of the march to organize the so-called orange burg seven of which i was. two others, three of us got together with some students last monday to talk those experiences. we were telling those students how this kind of stuff was behind us. i suspect that i might have to modify some of that after yesterday. >> schieffer: i think i should add that republican leaders this morning along with democrats such as yourself have denounced these demonstrations. be that as it may, it just shows how hot tempers are and how volatile this whole situation has been. congressman van hollen, the two of you have been tracking these votes. where are you right now do you think? >> mr. clybur

but chris van hollen who is member has gone gone on record planning to drop that and have a clean vote. that means that the rules would not have in any shortcuts that would go to the president's desk. it would go to the full house floor and it would have to be voted on by house members. there is new twist to it. john boehner says he wants to see all members of congress to have the roll calderon to shout out their ayes and nays individually. you mentioned the tea party folks. listen to the reaction when john boehner lays out this proposal. noise in the hallways is something seldom you hear in washington. folks will all over and they are making a hell of a racket. >> a roll call vote on this bill straight up or down vote, calling one member's name at a time and having the men and women stand up before god, their country and their constituents and announce their vote. i think it's time... >> reporter: they are definitely making their presence felt there. we are surrounded by marble and echo in the rotunda capitol office building and tea party folks are taking advantage of it. >> let's foc

congressman chris van hollen. democrat of maryland. chair of the congressional campaign committee. congressman van hollen, these stories are growing. we've got a lot of them out there. congresswoman slaughter had her office windows smashed. congresswoman gabrielle gifford's office the same deal. windows smashed and the dnc in the headquarters in rochester, new york. in ohio, in wichita. dhet threats to congresswoman slaughter and stupak, vandalism at other lawmaker's homes. it doesn't look like it will stop. it looks to me like more copycats as we get to the weekend and then we have booes on top of this craziness coming friday and saturday night. i would expect more trouble from the red-hots on the right. your thoughts? >> yeah, these are not isolated incidents, chris. you are seeing patterns. you're seeing this happen across the country. you know, during the protests over the health care bill, up here on capitol hill, we heard a lot of ugly slurs. we heard a lot of homophobic epithets thrown around. and that was outside the capitol. but unfortunately some of that also took place o

. >> congressman chris van hollen, i appreciate your time tonight. thank you. >> thank you, campbell. >>> and with me now is senior political correspondent and state of the union host candy crowley. so candy, you heard the congressman there. republicans are calling this a legislative scheme, a trick. congressman van hollen saying that's absolutely not true. where is the truth here? >> well, the truth is that there are house democrats who don't want to vote for the senate bill, which they have to pass in order to get health care. it's one of two bills they have to pass. so to make that more palatable, they are going to have what is called a rules vote, which we don't need to go into, but it's just another vote. it's like voting for the senate health care bill once removed. why do this? because then you're not on record as having passed a bill that gave special -- special compensation to nebraska or any of the other things that the house doesn't like about the senate bill. so it isn't a direct up or down vote. now, there will be a direct or down vote,
