christie smith joining us with the latest in this investigation, what happened here, christie? >> just a horrible accident. details still coming in and one person is dead and behind me this is the sail boat that was involved in the collision. this is a 42-foot catalina sail boat called the bella. on the front, you can see that the mast of it is completely snapped off. a short time ago out here we did see redwood city police come down to the marina. basically stationed here all night and they are the ones leading this investigation. the coast guard says that before 7:00 last night that sail boat collided with a marker buoy and a channel outside of redwood city. it happened during a race that was sponsored by the sequoia yacht club. this is kind of a casual race that we're told that they do weekly. the boat became entangled and the mast snapped and that's how the person died. other boats, aapparently, had trouble reaching it. that's because the water was so shallow at the time, a usgs survey boat was out here and actually helped two people onboard. they tried to help them, but, a

christie smith joins us with details on what the cyberstalker is asking students to do and this is just horrifying, christie. >> really disturbing for parents who have to keep up with all these apps and what they do. some students here in pleasanton have come forward and said that they were contacted through instagram asking that they share explicit photos of themselves. the district reacted quickly and sent out a social media warning that went home yesterday to families here. the messages were sent through instagram. that's a popular app a lot of people like it. that district sent home a letter asking parents to talk about this with their kids. and talk about internet safety. now, apparently, this person asked for inappropriate pictures in exchange for other inappropriate pictures. the district talking about things like not sharing personal information online and letting an adult know when something inappropriate may have happened. pleasanton police are also looking into this, but pleasanton, the school district here, aren't saying how many students have been contacted or the ages, but

"today in the bay" christie smith live in richmond where she spoke to the coast guard a short time ago. what did they have to say? >> they tell me in the next 30 minutes or so, we should see a coast guard helicopter fly by out here over san pablo bay looking for that pilot and the cessna went down about three miles off shore. witnesses are telling us that it lost its wing and spiraled right into the water about h4:00 near the richmond, san rafael bridge after colliding with a single engine hawker fury plane. they were both at an air show and there earlier in half moon bay and we don't know what caused this crash, but when flying tandem it's hard to see each other due to the wing placement. the cessna is high and the hawker fury is low. the hawker pilot was able to make it back to a small airport with his wife onboard. the cessna pilot, though, went down to the yacht harbor immediately tried to help. >> any time something like this happens in the marina, people jump to help. whatever's running, they grab and they go. and he was the nearest vessel. joe said he saw oil and fuel and debris

christie smith is tracking this. have crews made any progress so far? >> reporter: good morning to you. the coast guard tells me they have found some pieces of that plane floating on top of the water, about three miles from shore. sort of where you see the boats in the distance. they told me they have not found the pilot. the area where the plane went down could be more than 50 feet deep. the coast guard helicopter did a flyover this morning where the single-engine cessna went down in san pablo bay. the sheriff's department sent a boat out, too, to help with the search. north of the richmond san rafael bridge, about 4:00 yesterday afternoon, that cessna and a single-engine hawker sea ferry left the pacific coast dream machine show in half moon bay. the cessna was the chase plane that took pictures of it. organizers tell me that they had about 150 pilots that participated near the point san pablo harbor. we met a witness who said she actually saw the plane go down. the coast guard responded immediately. but first it was the boaters right nearby. >> we're

that's where christie smith joins us with the overnight developments. good morning, christie. >> good morning, laura. details are still coming in, but that accident happened here in redwood city during a race sponsored by the sequoia yacht club last evening. five people were onboard the boat. this is a 42-foot sail boat and it's kind of hard to see, but there is damage to the front of the boat. one person died, two others injured when that boat ran into a buoy. this was around 6:40 in the evening. there's also information that when that mast snapped it killed one of the people onboard. the yacht club did confirm the race took place that evening, but they didn't provide details of exactly what happened. we are told u.s. gs may have been the first one to get there and help because other boats have trouble with the shallow water. coast guard tell us they were involved in the rescue, as well. right now it is quiet and i have calls into the coast guard. what i can tell you is that we're seeing redwood city police going and sort of keeping watch over the scene

christie smith is live in san jose. you've been here all morning so you've really been watching this take place. what's happening now? >> reporter: we have learned that overnight there was a small flare-up and firefighters were called out here to put it out. this was for a fire that was on sunday. but right now what they're doing, they have a bulldozer out here. this gentleman has been working for quite some time. and what they're doing is clearing an area for arson investigators to get in and take a look around these former kntv studios. and what they're doing, they're focusing on an area behind the yellow tape there. the fire so hot it actually bent some of the metal, but that's where they think it's possible this fire started on sunday. they started on this abandoned building with that bulldozer very early this morning, and trying to find a cause. the debris got so hot in this five-alarm fire, that twisted piece of the metal didn't come down easy. they were all tangled within each other. but within 30 minutes, arson

and yesterday was a wild weather ride which brings in christie smith. good morning to you, christie. wow, what a sight behind you this morning at berkeley. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you. neighbors around here say it sounded like an explosion. when you look at what's left of this tree you can see why. lightning struck that redwood tree yesterday. it rained down pieces of wood for more than a block away. it also crashed down a branch on that minivan parked out front of the house near the tree. what i wanted to show you also is a google image what if this 80-foot redwood looked like in better days right beside a home on holly street in berkeley. lightning cut it down to about 20 feet tall. windows had to be boarded up that were blown out. tarps covering holes in the roof near the tree. neighbors say at about 1:20 in the afternoon we saw a flash of light and heard a loud boom. >> it's so close to our house, i never have seen what lightning can do. >> reporter: across the bay also in sausalito another lightning strike, the impact blew out windows in

"today in the bay" christie smith joins us with more details on how the victim was alerted to the flames. >> imagine being found asleep it's around 11:15 at night and all of a sudden your cell phone rings and it's your roommate telling you to hurry up, wake up and get out because the apartment is on fire. that's what happened here overnight on the third floor. that roommate did make it out but suffered third degree burns. this is near san jose state university. many people who live here are students. quickly grew into a second alarm at about 11:30 last night. firefighters say that roommate may have lit a candle talking on a cell phone at the time, got distracted, went in the other room and came back to find the apartment on fire. he may have actually flicked the match on to a couch and that may have started it. that's what they're looking into. neighbors say they heard the commotion. >> all of a sudden i hear some people yelling upstairs, help, fire department! i didn't really think what was going on until the hallway was bright red and i grabbed my phone and head out. put some pants on
