let's check in with meteorologist christina loren. >> good morning. everybody at home getting that heavy rain at this point. the one exception is up in sonoma county, this is a very slow moving system. as we head throughout the day today, we're expecting downpours. things will relax a little bit but we have some thorpgs on the way as well. we guide you and start that clock for you at 8:00 a.m. rich downpours, you'll need the umbrella and need why are jacket for today and can see showers not as steady but still coming in. you'll still need that umbrella. but then the rain returns, another storm on the heel of this system and then another one after that. i'll tell you how much rain we

up and down the peninsula in the south bay covering the storm from there, but let's start with christina loren. christina, what's going on right now? >> oh, my goodness. well, most rain in years, over three years so far, we can exceed that if totals keep coming in, but now, scott and kris, our focus is shifting to another threat, and that's strong thunderstorm development. take a look at this mass. it's still offshore. it's still not expected to move over the bay area until about 1:30, 2:00 today, but this, my friends, is a very unstable air mass and we've had lightning strikes reported, 709 lightning strikes. now what i think is going to happen is as this big mass starts to move closer to the coast, it's going to fall apart and lose some of that instability. nonetheless, we're going to see a few thunderstorms before the day is done. heavy rain from time to time between now and 5:00. scattered thunderstorms for the local mountains throughout this evening, then we'll see a few thunderstorms tomorrow morning, before we bring in another round of heavy rain and some cities have already accumulated

we want to check in with christina loren. we've experienced all these storms and it's really good news for the bay area. >> yeah. as we go into this weekend, we're going to keep the storm window open. but you know me, i like to look a good 15 days out if i can. it looks like after we get through the next round on monday, we're going to see a dry stretch and it could extend for the next ten days. it looks like we'll be cut off from that jet stream as we head on. that means a nice dry stretch for you to go out and get that christmas tree and get your lights up if you've been kept inside by the rainfall. we have spotty cells moving on shore. you want to give yourself extra time because there's a lot of aftermath from the weather we've had around here the past couple of days. as we head throughout the weekend, we'll see a lot of dry and we're going to keep these light cells in the forecast. between about noon and 7:00 they start to clear. and then let me take you into friday. we're going to get another wave of rain but not until

but we begin with meteorologist christina loren. christina, when is it it going to get bad? >> starting tonight, laura and sam, good morning. because expecting activity to ramp up tonight, we actually have a flash flood warning issued for the entire bay area, not just mountains, not just the north bay, everybody. and this goes into effect tonight. staying in effect all the way through tomorrow evening. i've got to tell you, in addition to heavy rain, a lot of wind on the way to the bay area, gusts of 80 miles per hour possible here in our backyard. the best chance for that is going to be through the higher elevations. it is going to get downright treacherous over the santa cruz mountains. expecting the same scenario through sonoma county, napa, with rain and wind at the same time. blizzard warning in effect for the sierra nevada, two to three feet of snow expected, above 6,000 feet. whiteout conditions, what we need for the drought situation but it's going to be dangerous. a storm like we haven't seen in years. time out the changes in my next report. back to you and the top

. >> now it's time to check out the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. no pounding rain at least this morning. >> no, but it's still slick out there. we have a great story to tell when it comes to the amount of rainfall we've accumulated. not just here in the bay area. it's a great story for the entire state of california. we might be able to climb from d4 to d3. you may not know what i'm talking about. we're talking about the drought. right now we're as extreme as it gets when it comes to that drought. but we've picked up so much rainfall over the past five days, enough to mack up that deficit up to about 20% in san francisco. so we're looking good. we'll have the latest numbers for you as we head throughout the next couple of days. the rainfall is still coming in so we're still adding to your totals. this morning getting a little break from the rain. but by tomorrow the heavy stuff returns. temperatures mostly in the 60s for today. as we get into your thursday, looking really good throughout the evening hours. then we bring in the rain, heavy at times,

san francisco, san jose, as you can see, not a whole lot out there right now, but meteorologist christina loren says totally different story in 36 hours and counting. santa clara water district -- let's go with christina. >> you know what, we're going to get to that story, it's an important one, because as you know we're in the middle of a drought, and hey, even though we're in a drought and have this rain coming your way, we urge you to please keep the conservation efforts going, because even the storm system that could dump eight inches or more of rain in the higher elevations, it is not going to bust that drought. this is what you can expect through this afternoon, sunshine, that rain moves in tomorrow evening into the north bay, then we're talking about really dangerous conditions by thursday. torrential downpours. in fact, there's a flash flood watch issued for the entire bay area due to localized flooding on streets and rapid creek and stream rises. also we have a high wind watch for the entire bay area and northern california. gusts in excess of 60 miles per hour. and this one is going t

meteorologist christina loren, this one is just getting started. >> it is. you know what, we actually had some sunshine out there for part of the day. let me kind of show you that, take you back a few hours. at this point, the sky is gray all across the board. this is sunol, but we did have two to three hours of sun, more on the way tomorrow. but there is more heavy rain moving our way, and i want to kind of bring you up to date with some of the more impressive historical data that's coming in. this is slowly trickling in, but take a look at this, since the beginning of this month, we're now at the 17th, we have averaged three-quarters of an inch of rain or more every single day up in santa rosa, so so far for the season, in every metropolitan city across the bay area, we're basically at four times as much as we typically get. and last year we didn't even get what we typically get, so that is why we have such historic totals to bring you. let me show you the radar right now. picture looks good. you can see the clouds rushing in ahead of that rain. that's goi

let's get your microclimate forecast from meteorologist christina loren. >> historic rainfall for the month of december. we kick off winter officially on the 21st and i got to tell you right now, january and february typically our wettest months here in the bay area. we're going to get by with a mostly dry day this week, more sunshine than any other day this week and looking pretty dry into the weekend, into your christmas day before we get hammered for the first week of january. we have a lot to go over in your full forecast. i like to move you ahead not just the next through three days, i like to move you ahead weeks if possible. first, though, here's mike and your morning drive. >> christinchristina, i'm just o get folks through their morning commute. the water a couple seconds ago had water on the lens and on the roadway. here's lane five. a report of the crash at the bay bridge toll plaza. we'll track that. we didn't see any slowing on the approach either. we're watching the vicinity of the toll plaza area. the rest of the bay moves very sloot smoothly because a lighter volume of

we'll begin with christina loren. how long is the wind going to last? sustained winds yesterday. >> it was really, really strong out there yesterday. especially into places where we don't typically see that fierce wind. i'm talk building the south bay. where we saw the most power outages. widespread across the bay area yesterday. wind speeds are dropping off. this is a cold front. a dry cold front came through the bay area. behind it trails the coldest air of the season. just in time for your new year's eve celebration plans. really we want to make sure you stay safe out there. we want you want to get out there and ring in the new year. make sure you have a jacket. it will still be breezy and temperatures will be frigid. right now back to you, sam and chris. >> definitely a sweater is not going to cut it. the windy weather is to blame for this apartment fire in san jose. they say it started when the wind knocked over a tree on seven trees boulevard. then one of the residents lit a cancel. when he came back, that apartment was in flames. >> bob joins us

. >> let's start with meteorologist christina loren and her radar. good morning. >> good morning to you, scott, kris. i want to show you how powerful this system is as it starts to approach california and what you'll notice is it is hitting completely vertically. we are not talking about a horizontal component and what happens when we have a storm that hits the bay area coast like this, it's going to kick up a lot, and i mean a lot, of wind. all that sheer force, all that wind moving in at once, coupled with heavy rainfall. i'm going to give you an idea of the timing, but you have to consider this is not only packing heavy rain, but gusty wind. typically you get one or the other here in the bay area and that is why we are on high alert. the entire bay area, a flash flood warning that goes into effect tonight through thursday night, but i can tell you the heavy rainfall isn't going to impact the greater bay area until we get into tomorrow afternoon. before the rain, the wind will move in. we're talking about a wind warning that starts tonight at 10:00

meteorologist christina loren keeping a close eye on the sky. we always know it's a busy day when it's super quiet in the weather department. >> i know, i feel bad. people keep coming over. i know they want to know their personalized forecast. i've got to get it down, first. and by the way, i'm opening up the invitation, come back to my little office and i'll be much more pleasant to you. the next couple of hours, here's the deal, this storm is giving me a headache. i've got to tell you, we've got two rounds of wave, two waves of rain coming our way. one storm system, the core is going to cross over us and we're going to get a front out of it, as well. for us, looks like heavy rainfall on the way for sure for tomorrow morning right here in the south bay. and some great-looking snow totals, as well. but then on wednesday, we have some thunderstorms on the way. and the two systems combined, the two waves could really bring our rainfall totals up. so we're actually worried about potential flooding as we head throughout the next 48 hours. we're goin
