cnn's christine romans here to make sense of it all.ured out how this is all going? >> it's just a big riddle. and when you look at this forecast, this poll of these business economists, you can see that they're all struggling to come up with a consensus for what could happen here. here's a good example. i looked at their gdp forecast for q4 to q4. for this year, the range is so wide, there's either a recession -- that's a real recession, minus 1.3%, or a pretty fine charitable 1.9%. you look out for next year, either a stall in the economy, barely positive growth, all the way up to a very strong 2.6% economy. so it just shows you kind of how all over the map these economists are. for all of the reasons that you just mentioned. all of these different statistics. we have a strong underlying economy. 8 interest rate hikes by the fed meant to cool it, but inflation still too high here. so there's a lot of kind of hand wringing about where we're going and what happens next. i think where you can find a consensus is nearly 60% of these respo

i'm christine romans. the search and rescue operation grows more grim in turkey and syria, more than 16,000 people have died in the earthquake there and hope is fading that rescuers will find survivors beneath the mountain of rubble. remarkably two women in turkey were found alive wednesday after 62 hours buried under a collapsed building. and in syria, a newborn baby was pulled from the rubble, her mother is believed to have died after giving birth. international search and rescue teams continue to arrive including some from the united states. salma abdelaziz is live in istanbul for us. there has been anger over the turkish government's response to the disaster. what are they saying now? >> reporter: we're now entering the fourth day after this powerful earthquake one of the most powerful earthquakes to strike this region in a century hit. and that means that window, that glimmer of hope is fading. these rescue operations are soon going to turn into recovery operations. and that is absolutely horrifying f

the seventh straight month, but like everything with the economy, it is more than that, and christine romansn, and what does the report mean for the feds effort to calm down the inflation? >> i think it means that the fed's work is not done here, and you can expect them to raise the interest rates, and 6.4% is the annual inflation rate, and that is the improvement seven months in a row, and you saw it grow 7.5%, and shelt er is the reaso, because rent is record 8.4%. so if you have seen your rent increase, that is the reason there. and so the trend there, and this is what we will see is a spike in the first time in three months, and digging into the numbers, there is more work to be done, and food up 10%, and gasoline prices rising, and record shelter number, and this is something that is a real problem, and you switch the cuts of meat, but you can't switch where you are living and this is why inflation is number one. >> are the prices coming down? >> well, yes for television, and used cars that had spiked for the pandemic, and women's apparel, and smartphones and major appliances are down o

. >> cnn chief business correspondent christine romans joining us now. any surprises for you? >> well, look, you had inflation up 6.4% over the past year and so that's seven months in a row of slightly declining, moderating inflation i would say, but that month over month figure up 0.5% december to january is getting a lot of attention, half of that increase was because of shelter. that's something that's not easy to shield yourself from, shelter inflation. we're watching that carefully. overall you can see the trend 6.4% a little hotter than many on wall street had expected, but it is moderating from that 9.1% pace that we saw last summer. when i show you this month over month, you can see where i was a little concerned about that pop on that last bar, that is because of shelter, that is because of food, natural gas and gasoline prices. those numbers year over year are still troublesome. what i would say my take away from this is people are still feeling the pinch of inflation. it is still a year into this big story for american households and kitchen table economics, it is n
