christie smith is on the scene there. one of the questions i have is as a result of the fuel spill, is there damage to the roadway over there? >> reporter: you know, i just spoke with the chp a minute ago and he said because this is cement that as far as he knows there is no damage. it would be more likely that it would be damaged if it was made out of asphalt. that's the good news. the other good news we have is that he's telling us now it looks like northbound 880 will reopen in its entirety at 6:00 a.m. earlier they had said 7:00, but it looks like things are moving along. they have got quite a few crews out here working to clean up 200 gallons of diesel fuel that spilled all over the road. it's rather slick. they butt putt down an absorbent. what started this? they say a hit and run accident around midnight near 7th street. they say a driver hit a car with four people inside and then plowed into a big rig. the driver of the big rig lost control, hit both sides of the freeway. apparently he had just filled up both hio

christie smith is live in concord with more on the fire. christie, you said that it came close to some homes. >> reporter: yeah, that's what we're hearing. good morning to you. we're also hearing that firefighters are still keeping an eye on this overnight because it's rather windy at this hour. they want to make sure that this fire is indeed out. it was quite scary for some homeowners here. this fire crept right up close to their homes. in fact, firefighters had to do structure protection overnight. fortunately, no homes were damaged. this broke out just after 11:00 in the hills behind discovery way near cal state's contra costa center off ig nashia valley road. flames came close enough that some gathered important things. this was a two-alarm fire and in the end burned two acres of grass before the fire was knocked down in a little over 30 minutes. there are reports of some neighbors saying they heard what they thought might have been loud fireworks before the fire broke out. i talked with a dispatcher this morning to see if she heard anyt

christie smith is live in san rafael with the look at some of the damage. these are vegetation fires, right? >> reporter: yes. that's exactly right. we're not talking about one but three suspicious fires in just one night. i wanted to show you how close this came to a car dealership over there. if steve can swing around you can see the ashes. this is all that's left this morning. it burned almost all the way up to a fence where there is also an old border's book store. there are two other burn spots along the railroad tracks this morning that run behind buildings in a mostly industrial area. the san rafael firefighters were called out after 9:00 a.m. and found tall grass burning in spots. this is near a possible homeless encampment. there are clothes and shoes left here along the tracks. the fires were put out quickly and the cause is under investigation but 3 are all considered suspicious. this follows a string of fires in the past month on june 14th. a transient woman was arrested on suspicion of setting fires near a homeless area. before that on may 22,
