coast guard's response the night of the collision. what's been the biggest challenge so far for you and your team? >> well, the challenge is to make sure we keep teams out there 24 over seven, primarily right now to, like i said, maintain the safety of and monitor the security, the safety zone. but we're doing that by bringing in multiple crews from across the coast guard to rotate crews out to keep them fresh and and make sure we maintain presence on the waterway the entire time. >> so the coast guard flies helicopters in this airspace yourselves. how concerning is this data discrepancy between the air traffic control and the jets? reporter. >> well, the coast guard, uh, hilo operation is a different part from what i am responsible for. my area is more so the water assets from the local coast guard station. but i know the coast guard operations with the helos have always done in a safe and effective manner. so i don't think that any of that is really affecting what they're doing for their operations. >> the visibility in the in the p

it's part of a joint effort from the coast guard, u.s. customs and border protection and the department of defense. the coast guard says the undocumented immigrants were handed over to the department of defense, who will transport them internationally. meanwhile, thousands of people gathered in cities across the country to protest mass deportations and recent ice enforcement. that includes huge turnouts in san jose and los angeles. hundreds of people marched near alum rock and king in east side san jose today, demanding an end to what they're calling the trump administration's harmful immigration policies. in los angeles, hundreds of protesters made their way onto 101 right here, blocking traffic on this freeway. not clear if there were any arrests, but demonstrators say they want the public to understand how immigrants are part of the fabric of communities. and tomorrow, more demonstrations are planned. people are gearing up to stay home from work and school and avoid spending in a day of protest. it's being called a day without immigran

we know there are two coast guard cutters on scene. here is weather as well as several other ships. there is a coast guard station just across the river from where we're standing, and so they were among the first to be able to respond here to help out initially. and now they're helping with securing a perimeter on the water here so that private boats don't get into the area and potentially run into some sort of debris here. and they're also helping with the actual salvage operation when they're tasked with doing that. we managed to talk to the commanding officer of the coast guard in this area a little while ago, and i want you to hear what he said about the work that his people are doing here. >> i think as i talked to some of the crews out there on what i get overwhelmingly from everybody is this is what they would want somebody to do for them if this was their family. so they have no no issues with going out there and being on the water all day, as long as it takes to try and bring some closure to the family. >> and of course, the other side of this is the investigation. what cau

coast guard says it detected a boat roughly 15 miles from san diego. and when the coast guard reached that boat, they found 16 people on board trying to reach the u.s. from mexico. everyone was taken into u.s. border patrol custody. and new tonight, we now know the cause of the martinez refining company fire this weekend. officials today saying a hydrocarbon leak was to blame. the company says two workers discovered the leak yesterday afternoon while opening equipment for planned maintenance. the workers immediately evacuated that area within the refinery that leaked material caught on fire, and then the fire quickly spread. >> almost like an earthquake. almost. so yeah, it was super scary. honestly, what i thought about was just getting my family to safety. you know, i have a daughter and wife waiting for me at home. and when all of that happened, it's just like you kind of. you don't want to imagine it, but you think maybe an explosion that's bigger. >> the martinez refining company describes the fire now as a small residual fire that's under control

air force crash investigator captain and coast guard navigator, former black hawk helicopter crew chiefl christopher walker. thank you all for coming on it. to you first because this is it is interesting i think i want to read this if i can. this is the report it says 6:106:06:10 entered a climb of altitude 1600 feet and then 6:06:56 so 14 seconds later the plane entered a rapid descent at an average rate of 11,000 feet per second. what do you make of that? >> the thing with the layer 55 the plane accelerates and has a great climb rate. shortly after departure and then watching the plane hit the ground the angle and the speed at which it hit the ground to me doesn't look like the pilot had any control just went right into the ground. so clearly something wrong shortly after departure. even the fuel on board obviously just a fireball which you can see the plane does hit the ground but the medical oxygen on board it was the explosion when it hit the ground. initially what i am looking at. >> trace: to you we only have a few minutes here trying to wrap this up for what about rapid decompre
