this shouldn't happen in columbia mall.shouldn't happen anywhere, but that's where we are in society and things do happen. certainly as we're dealing with kind of the technical logistical issues of this, there's three families grieving. our best wishes and prayers go out to them. about 11:15 this morning, we received a number of calls for a shooting at the columbia mall. the shooting took place on the upper level above where the food court is. in and outside a store called zoomie's. it's been described as kind of a skateboard multiple calls there. as the executive mentioned, we were able to get officers on scene, within two minutes. based on our past training experiences, those officers got into the mall very quickly. they were able to locate three people deceased from gunshot wounds. i want to clear up something, because it's been circulating in some of the media that this has been reported by some as a domestic related incident. we have no knowledge of that yet. i'll get back to you in a second where we are in our investi

now columbia mall remains a major crime scene tonight. it is closed and police are not saying when shoppers can return to collect strollers, purchases, and personal belongings that were abandoned when thousands fled the mall. we continue our team coverage tonight beginning with an interview from a store employee who witnessed the shootings from inside the skate boarding score. he says the gunman emerged from the back of the store with a shotgun. >> he shot her. took one shot and at that point, i got down below the other side of the counter and ten seconds later, i heard the second gun shot. i scrambled out of the store on my hands and knees right by the male employee who was down on the ground still alive. >> and of course, we now know both employees died in today's shooting. the two victims bodies were found inside the store. the dead gunman was discovered just outside the door. and there were more people who saw what happened and had every reason to fear for their lives. >> the shooter looked straight at me from the second floor level a

this is the type of gun used by the columbia mall shooter.t is a mossberg .500, and 12 gauge pump action shotgun and it can be broken down into pieces that are less than 18 inches long which would make it easy to transport in the backpack. and darion aguilar bought it here at this gun shop making the purchase on december 10th in the afternoon. inside of the shoch to d-- shop today, i spoke to the man who sold him the gun, but he accounts it this way. he said that aguilar is nice and polite and said please and thank you and wearing khaki pants and buttoned shirt. there was another man with aguilar at the time, and the salesman says that he, too, was well-dressed and courteous. and aguilar said that he was nervous about guns, and that he lived alone with his mother, and wanted a gun for home defense. he paid about $134 cash for the gun and bought two boxes of shells, one with bird shot, bb pellets type, and another with buckshot, more lethal pellets. they say he filled out the appropriate form, and the form was submitted online and within a min

story is impossible to tell without the district of columbia. tonight i will focus largely on the 1-way street that is the imposition that the federal government made on washington d.c. but i want to make it clear that in reality and in my book fair is much more push back within a city. even at its most politically important state residents challenge the federal government's plans and by failing to comply by insisting on home rules and offering a different account or explanation of the events than the government's version. the focus on the way the federal government uses the district to craft the modern drugs. first let me give some sense of existing scholarship on the origins of the drug war and where my own work fits in with that literature. most scholars to have looked at this issue emphasize two things, first classification of certain drugs as narcotics, apps, morphing, cocaine and later marijuana and second their removal from general circulation, all of which took place in the early part of the 20th century and was deeply tied to the reputa

tonight this flyer is circulating throughout columbia mall. the day of the shooting, police say aguilar came here in a cab. here is something new. a source at barwood cab company tells news4 one of its drivers called police after the shooting, said he had taken a, quote, weird looking guy to the mall. we've not heard from howard county police to confirm or deny this. but the other thing to note is aguilar was picked up in burtonsville. if he lived and worked in college park, what was he doing in burtonsville? meanwhile, investigators still tight-lipped about the contents of aguilar's journal, but confirm he knew he was having mental health issues. what the journal does not show is a link to breanna benlolo and tyler johnson. the number one question in this investigation, motive undetermined. and the one thing that has been ruled out in this investigation is a number of people had tipped off police to a picture of benlolo and someone that allegedly looked like the shooter. it was not him. that has been ruled out. in columbia, maryland, erika go
