the regional economy, the start-up scene in cambridge, massachusetts, is really different than columbus, ohio or austin, texas or orlando, florida. everywhere we went, we heard the same six major themes in terms of the problems, the obstacles in their way. not enough people with the skills we need. and this is the skills gap that you've heard a lot about. that's what's coming out of the education establishment, folks are not graduating with day one skills businesses need. that's further exacerbated by high school policies. we don't attract and obtain the world's best talent. tax and regulatory burden and there's too much uncertainty out there and it's washington's fault. so, those are the problems. once you know the problems and there can be no doubt now what the problems are because we heard it everywhere we went. >> what can washington actually do about that, john, then courtney, i want you the weigh in. >> we make a number of suggestions, we address the uncertainty coming out of washington. i think the thing all business people are looking for is meaningful progress on the debt and deficit

karen kasler, capital bureau chief for ohio public radio and television, in columbus, ohio. and scott shafer, host and correspondent for the "california report" on kqed public radio. he joins us from san francisco. welcome back to the newshour to all three of you. scott, let me start with you out on the west coast. what are you seeing in california? >> well, there is a rang of impacts, judy, ranging from annoyance to anger. california has about 150 civilian federal employees. they are disproportionately located in places like san diego which has a large military presence, 29 palms, los angeles, places where there are a lot of defense installations. and so what you are seeing is the impact not only on those individual employees who have been furloughed or are still furloughed, but on the businesses that rely on those employees. for example yosemite park, an iconic park in california, a lot of the businesses in small towns like sennora rely on those tourists but they are being turned away. some motels, hotel itsing restaurant its, cafes are really feeling the pinch. >> karen k
