joining us now is nbc's tom costello. tom, good morning. what are the key sticking points here?company had offered a 25% pay hike over four years to boeing employees, but that was a staggering rejection, as you said, 94.6%. okay, but there is a caveat here. 25% pay hike over four years, they would have to give up their benefits. yes they got some improvements to other benefits, but they already lost their pensions. and their wages have been stagnant for ten years. so, the company had offered this, said it was the best offer, the union said no. you had our wages stagnant for ten years, you took away our pensions and now you're going to give us the slow rollout of a pay hike. a very staggering rejection. this has been a year in which boeing has had a bit of a bad year, from bad to worse. remember everything it has been dealing with. the midair blowout, max 9 door plug, that led as you know to federal investigations and determination that the safety culture at boeing had broken down. the entire production line slowed during that process. it is only now starting to resume. the compa

tom costello has been following the story since the very beginning. this hearing has been going on, i think, all day, right? what has stood out to you so far, and where does the investigation go from here? >> reporter: well, this is day one of a two-week hearing with about two dozen people who will be interviewed as part of this coast guard marine board of inquiry, and that is really the focus. right there, that submersible which you may recall was criticized immediately after the disaster because it was made of a carbon fiber material, not titanium, as it was on its way to the titanic. the question all along was, is that kind of material able to withstand the pressure of going so deep in the ocean? the former chief engineer for this company, for ocean gate, who left in 2019 because he was trying to warn the company this is not safe, he talked today about specifically being asked to pilot that submersible and he said no. listen to what he said. >> they wanted me to be the pilot that runs the titanic mission. and i told them i'm not getting in it. and

tom costello is reporting on this.mer astronaut and columbia university professor. this was a dangerous mission, how did they make it work? >> for the first time they opened up the entire space craft to the vacuum of space. that's the way they did space walks back in the 1960s, for example, the very first soviet and american space walks, but they opened the entire spacecraft of the vacuum of space, and bled out the oxygen. and they stepped out. i got to say, it was more of a stretching exercise than it was walking because they were really trying to gauge how flexible with their new space suits. how much arm maneuverability and leg maneuverability do they have. because to your point, they want to eventually use this brand new space suit for missions to the moon and also to mars. so they don't have an air lock on this particular spaceship. that's why they had to open up the entire ship. everybody, all four astronauts had to don their space suits. only two actually went out. and then they were concerned a little bit about

tom costello is following this for us. walk us through the exciting large. >> 1:17:21.onds they could miss that runny flew in space. went off without a hitch. spacex crew 9 with two astronauts, one russian astronaut and one spacex asked her not to dock with the space station. a veteran space force kernel and astronaut is accompanied by a russian astronaut. they will dock at the space station tomorrow at 5:30 eastern time. what makes this not a normal mission anymore, right, it was supposed to be a normal rotation on the station, not anymore. now they have these two astronauts rather than four because they have to use the empty seats to bring back butch wilmore and suni williams. they will not be coming home until february. as you know, butch and suni lifted off in june. they were supposed to be there 10 days. they have in," stuck on the space station ever since as nasa did not trust their boeing starliner spaceship to bring them home safely. starliner came home alone autonomously, no humans on board and did land safely. now butch wilmore and suni williams will be on the

we have tom costello with the latest.mission managers. good for boeing that it was safe to return with a crew, but nasa wasn't convinced. it was a tense three months. starliner, as you know, launched back on june 5th, on what was supposed to be a ten-day mission to the international space station. they trouble shooted helium leaks and thruster problems. nasa didn't want to risk putting butch wilmore and suni williams on the starliner for the return. nasa needs starliner and last night, they celebrated the landing in the new mexico desert after midnight eastern time. >> it is great to have starliner home. a safe and successful landing is exactly what we wanted. >> reporter: okay, but suni and butch will be staying on the station until next february and catching a ride home on the spacex ship. they will do research and maintenance and a lot of crossword puzzles, i'm guessing. peter, back to you. >> tom, thank you. >>> turning to politics and president trump his legal team. the judge pushing the sentencing in the hush money
