>> let's bring in our cnn political correspondent candy crowley.vering obama the candidate certainly very familiar, but it's a tone that we've seen very different nan recently. why do you suppose? >> reporter: well, first of all, because democrats on capitol hill have been saying to him you need to get out there. enough of this cool, calm, collected president barack obama. what we need to see out there is some kind of passion that matches some of the other side's passion that we've seen in some of these town hall meetings around. they really want two things on capitol hill, the democrats anyway, some sort of guidance on what they will -- what he absolutely does want in the health care bill. what democrats don't want is to sort of walk the plank and then find out that the president is not behind them, so they want to know what specifically he absolutely has to have in the health care bill but they want him to come down from the 50,000-foot view and get down on the ground and put some of that passion into play here because that's what pushes people.

candy crowley is covering it all for us. there was so much made about this. it was a pretty basic speech. >> reporter: in the end, it was pretty basic and pretty conservative speech. it was -- listen, you cannot blame whatever is going on in your life, even if you have a bad home life or, you know, you're poor, no matter what it, is can you not have an excuse for not studying. that's pretty basic. that's pretty conservative. you know, stay in school. not many people i know that would argue that except for maybe the kids themselves. but nonetheless, it was a very basic speech on education. and, indeed, a lot of sort of conservative value things in there which obviously are far greater than conservative values. >> i talked to jim grier, the chairman of the florida republican party last week who raised all sorts of concerns saying, you know, essentially this is going to be a speech where the president is talking about health care and trying to shove his agenda down the throats of american students and indoctrinate them into his way of thinking. he was claim thag

candy crowley, paul begala, ed rollins, peter bergen. people say president did a good job communicating with them. do we have any indication that more americans are for his plan? >> let me caveat this to death. before we do it. and that is that, first of all, these are just people who watched the speech and we know that millions more will get little clips of it and listen to the pun deadry than listen to the speech. it also skews heavily democratic. we think that the democratic sample in this flash poll is eight to ten points higher than the general population. having said that, the president did very well in this poll. when we asked what is your reaction to the president's speech? 56% very positive. somewhat positive, 21%. negative, 21%. that is a great showing obviously. interesting also that he picked up support here for his plan, and we all know that this -- can waver. but before this speech, about 53% of americans were in favor of this, after the speech 67%. as you pointed out earlier, that's about what bill clinton had at the end o

. >> larry: candy crowley, is there a time constraint here?i mean, when is this supposed to come up for a vote at a certain time? are we -- do we have a deadline? >> interesting that he didn't give one. he gave one of august for some votes and didn't get it. there was no deadline by the president, but there's a political deadline here. if he doesn't have something by the end of this year, 2010 looms and it's very, very hard at that point to do anything, because you've got all these people that need to get re-elected. so that's the time line. a political calendar rather than an absolute date. and the other problem is, is the president and the white house knows full well, the longer something like this is out there, the more it gets shot at. so they want to move this really quickly. and i think it's very clear, from senator baucus saying, by the way, i'm going to have a bill in a week, that that message has gone up to capitol hill, saying, okay, guys, let's speed this up. >> larry: thanks, guys. you'll all be checking in later when anderson coop
