he's the president and ceo of cvs health. and he's here to share with us his plans to reshape the company and from the corner pharmacy and convenience store to a series of health care centers, where people can get basic care at an affordable price. mr. merlo had been working toward this vision for cvs for several years now. in tw2014, the company eliminat all tobacco sales and changed its name to cvs health. and last year, cvs health, under merlo's leadership, acquired aetna, one of the biggest u.s. health insurers, in a $69 billion deal. it's one of a series of major health care company mergers that is reshaping the health care industry. merlo is a pharmacist by education. he joined cvs pharmacy in 1990 when the company bought people's drug. he rose to the role of president of cvs pharmacy before being tapped to lead the entire company in 2011. please join me in giving a national press club warm welcome to larry merlo. reporter: cvs going to be posting earnings tomorrow.at the company's track record, last quarter it exceeded on the top and the bottom line. if you look at the previous two quarters earnings, it has exceeded expectations by around 3% on average. so most analysts seem to be expecting the same thing. and you said it, after that megamerger, $69 billion, you sort of got a pharmacy benefits company, you got a retail company, you got an insurance company or health care services, i guess is the broader term, all wrapped into one. cvs has the minute clinic and a lot of analysts saying that is driving a lot of foot traffic so they are looking to see some pretty positive signs as far as the pharmacy retail business goes. just comparing it to cigna, we know cigna made a similar kind of purchase, in buying express scripts. cvs so far has at least earnings-wise outperformed its competitor. those are some of the trends we're looking for. overall, this is pretty much winding up this earnings season. 79% of the s&p 500 companies have already reported th

cvs, southwest airlines, both falling. cvs falling on an earnings report with 2019 guidance the issue, coming in much lower than they had expected. and at southwest, follow 5%. -- fall of 5%, this as they updated the market on the impacts of the government shutdown, saying it will cost more than they told the market in the earnings report last month. and we are also looking at bigart, falling 3% after gains yesterday on the back of their stellar fourth quarter earnings report. investors not liking the use -- the news out of the u.k. that they would be selling. this after the u.k. regulators cited competition concerns, and investors are concerned that this will obligate the walmart international strategy, where they are trying to give it to higher growth markets, the likes of india and china. and we are looking at oil, rising up 1.7%. close to 2% earlier in the day. that is having a big impact on some of the drillers. oil up, off of november highs. and halliburton rising as oil is rising. devon reporting earnings after the
