dan simon is on the scene there right now. he has an update on what is actually going on where he is because we know that the police have been trying to clear this crowd, dan. >> reporter: yeah, hey jon, police continuing to try to clear this crowd in downtown san francisco, you can see police on horseback pushing these protesters down the street. it is a very chaotic situation to say the very least. these people do not to want go home and ultimately i hate to say it, police may have to use some force against some of these protesters. all night they have shown remarkable strength in dealing with them, but as the crowd has become more unruly, police may be forced to escalate things a bit. and you can see they're continuing to drive this crowd down the street, you can see people waving the mexican flag. the numbers aren't quite what they were, jon, you can see it's a significantly smaller crowd than it was only a few minutes ago. these seem to be the last of the people out here. and hopefully they'll come to their senses if you w

cnn's dan simon is outside the event. i understand, dan, there was some activity going on. describe what happened? >> well, hi, wolf. things have suddenly became quiet chaotic and fragile outside. we have well over a thousand protesters outside the convention center. and a short time ago, we had a crowd that basically got through some barricades, got through the front door of the convention center, and they tried to get inside. they were met by police in riot gear, who kept them at bay, but it is a fragile situation out here and you can see the police behind me, you can see this crowd of protesters, this is the barricade they got over. and right now they're just shouting and yelling. they're yelling at police. you can see this group of police trying to keep things under control. you can see the police on horseback, just a very spirited scene out here with protesters holding signs. yelling at some of the supporters who have gone inside. and we're just waiting to see what happens. hopefully, things can remain peaceful. we haven't seen anybody hurt, but it is quite fragile, wo

i want to go to dan simon there outside. i know, dan, that protesters seem to be designated to an area. right? what are you seeing? >> reporter: well, i'm definitely not using my golf commentator voice out here. definitely a few hundred protest earls outside. you can see several of them have mexican flags. you know, fresno relies on migrant workers from mexico to keep the agriculture economy going. and so not surprisingly seeing a lot of those folks here at this rally if you will. and they're talking about donald trump's immigration proposals. obviously, they're no fans of his in terms of him wanting to build the wall. you're offering -- hearing that. in terms of whether or not to see silence, the police say they're very well prepared far eventuality. usually when you have probables, they occur at night. this started at 10:00 a.m. local time so they're optimistic they're not going to see any problems. that said, they have at least 150 officers here on site. some of whom are prepared to respond in riot gear and so far no prob
