nbc's dana griffin reports from maui. >> reporter: tonight, the agonizing search for the missing in lahaina. >> we can't find my friend. please, can you find my friend. we need help, please. >> reporter: in an address to the state -- >> lahaina will rise again. >> reporter: the governor vowing to rebuild and not repeat history, that as of now, left to confirm 114 dead. >> we'll get to the bottom of exactly how the fire started, how our emergency procedures and protocols need to be strengthed, and how we can improve our defenses to from tekt us in the future. >> reporter: the pain staking process will take years. and community members want input. >> give us time to heal, and allow us to sit at that able. >> reporter: atf investigators are working to determine the fire's cause, as hawaiian electric and subsidiaries are hit with a fifth lawsuit, alleging power lines came into contact with vegetation. >> do you regret not sounding the sirens? >> i do not. >> reporter: this comes as herman endaya, the emergency manager, under fire for not sounding the alarms. this teacher said she's been able to

joining me now from one of the shelters on maui is nbc news correspondent dana griffin. dana, it's good to have you. what can you tell me about what you're seeing out there? >> reporter: well, katy, i can tell you i'm seeing some very resilient people here in maui, people who have lost their homes, walking out of here still smiling, grateful to be alive. about 300 to 400 people spent the night here at this evacuation center. we're at maui high school. they tell me they have plenty of supplies inside. they're getting water, food, shelter, clothing, and they say that, you know, the volunteers are doing a really great job. but many of them have seen some devastating images escaping the flames in lahaina, which as you mentioned is a very historic town which has been obliterated. 36 people we know of so far have died. this is not including the pets. you know, maui is home to endangered species. that could be a concerning thing as crews are working to assess the damage. it's still unclear how much they have been able to contain the three fires currently burning on the island. w

>> nbc's dana griffin, that's terrifying. dana, i know you're at one of the shelters on maui. what are people telling you about their escapes? >> reporter: andrea, i literally just spoke to a woman moments ago, she said her home was destroyed. and i asked her, you know, how are you feeling about it. she says, things happen, which is surprisingly such a positive outlook considering so many lives have been lost. pets, historic landmarks, homes destroyed. i mean, right now we are waiting to get an update on just how bad the devastation has been. we know that crews are going out at sunrise which is right now to assess the damage, to continue search and rescue, because as you mentioned the number of fatalities is likely to rise. it's 6:00 a.m. local time, so a lot of people at the shelter are waking up. we've chatted with a few of them. one guy from san diego, he didn't even make it to his hotel because the roads were blocked off. he described the smoke as mountains of smoke just sitting on top of lahaina. and it's really devastating for this tourist community that relies on touris

joining me from hawaii is nbc news correspondent dana griffin. hat they just want the president to get the red tape out of the way. what's the expectation for when he lands there, and how he'll be greeted? >> reporter: well, katy, when he lands here which is going to be in about an hour and a half, he's going to be here in the town of lahaina just behind me. he'll be walking through that decimated area with the first lady, hoping to get an up close look at the damage, a look at the devastation people went through as they fled for their lives nearly two weeks ago. we're told that he is going to likely address the people here in lahaina. he's going to talk to survivors, first responders, even local officials, and i'm sure people really want to hear what the long-term plan is for what will happen with lahaina. you know, people have been frustrated about the government's response, and as you heard the guy there, he says don't come here, because a lot of the hawaiian people have been banding together to help take care of themselves, but obviously they

nbc's dana griffin just arrived there. dana, this investigator comes as the island's top emergency official resigned. what more can you tell us? >> reporter: yeah, so a day before herman andaya resigned, which was on tuesday, he faced some tough questions from reporters. listen to what he told them. >> do you regret not sounding the sirens? >> i do not. had we sounded the siren that night, we're afraid that people would have gone into the fire. i should also note that there are no sirens on the mountain side, where the fire was spreading down. so even if we sounded the sirens, it would not have saved those people on the mountain side. >> reporter: so you've got a lot of mounting criticism for that statement because residents here, people who are still missing loved ones say if you would have sounded those alarms it would have woke up our elderly grandparents, because a lot of people didn't have cell phones on or tv or radio. they would have at least stepped outside their home. they wouldn't have gone toward the mountainside

>> and dana griffin is there in maui. how is the search process going and the reaction to the president's visit? >> so right now there's about 15% of the burn area, andrea, they still have to get through. we're told from fema that's going to take weeks because there are so many multistructure buildings that are compromised. they have to delayer them layer by layer and continue the search and it's likely to take weeks. unfortunately the fire burned so hot, according to the governor, he estimates up to 2,000 degrees that unfortunately some of these victims may never be found. during the president's visit he got to see the devastation from marine one and also on the ground and pointed to a symbol which is now amidst the ash in the thriving town, listen to what he said. >> to my left is the banyan tree beloved by this community for over 150 years. here in the former capital kingdom of hawaii stood for generations as a sacred spot of exceptional significance. today it's burned, but it's still standing. the tree survived for a

. >> dana griffin, what is the latest on the recovery effort there?r: josÉ, good morning to you. there's about 15% of the burn zone yet to be searched, mainly because there's multi-level structures there that we are told by fema are structurally unsound. they will have to take each layer off, layer by layer to finish the search. all of the single story homes have been searched. there's also a search for contaminants going on at the moment. they will be going through to collect some of the tainted debris we have been told could be toxic and has a potential to cause skin irritation and long-term lung disease, and they will put those chemicals and toxins that comes from batteries and asbestos and toxics into barrels and shipping containers, and it's unclear where those containers will go as far as the landfill. they cannot stay here on maui because the local landfills do not have the capacity for those type of contaminants. we are told the search for the remaining victims and cultural artifacts will last an additional several weeks. unfortunately, the go

. >> nbc's dana griffin joins me from hawaii. just one story out of far too many. frustration with the government response ahead of the president's visit. tell me more about what you've been hearing from the people who were there. >> reporter: chris, it all started days after this disaster. people wanted more of a response. they wanted more aid actually being taken into lahaina through the road behind me that was closed for several days. that has now reopened. we're hearing from people who are actually very grateful for all of the help. i've spoken to people i interviewed two weeks ago, and last night they said we've been able to get into a hotel, gotten clothes, food. the initial $700 has been helpful. obviously people will need a lot more resources. people have had complaints, not feeling like there's enough being done here. they open that when the president visits, that that will provide more answers and reassurance that the lands will stay in the hands of the people of lahaina and they'll have more aid that will last for years to come. listen to what else peopl

. >> dana griffin joins us from maui, we're hearing more about some of the significant challenges that firefighters faced. what have you learned? >> reporter: gabe, we're hearing that firefighters in lahaina has issues with water, the water pressure was either low or nonexistent, we spoke with one of the firefighters, listen. >> half our resources on the island were on the other side fighting a giant fire. i thought about that right away. holy cow, anyone coming this way it's going to be wild. anything that could come into play that could limit our resources happened. >> reporter: she also talked about the fact that power lines had fallen down preventing people from escaping through their cars and she said she saw people carrying people running for their lives, lot of people had to make life and death decisions. there are several lawsuits have been filed against hawaiian electric, many companies and several of the victims are blaming them for this fire, i want to mention the fire however hasn't been determined. >> dana griffin, thank you. >>> time now for our money minute. the usps ann

nbc's dana griffin is on the ground in maui, so much devastation, dana. the resources getting there to help? because we know that over the course of these last days there's been a lot of concern that folks just aren't getting what they need. >> exactly, and i think, chris, with the opening of this main road that leads to lahaina and west maui, we can definitely see and will hopefully see over the next several days more of those resources coming in. as you mentioned, a lot of people were frustrated because this main road had been shut down. we have people that live, work and have family members beyond lahaina that did not have access here. late last night residents were allowed to go in, and early at 6:00 a.m. everyone else was allowed. this road will remain open until 10:00 p.m. that's when it reverts back to restrictions. we saw a line of cars coming in. it took only 18 minutes for that entire line to make it through. we're hearing reports of at least a million pounds of food, hundreds of thousands of pounds of ice, clothing, water, housing being made av

nbc's dana griffin is live from maui. some hawaiian residents are suing the utility company as videos emerge of what happened to the power lines during the high winds. dana, what can you tell us? >> reporter: well, chris, i can tell you, we have seen a lot of videos on social media, one in particular that purports to show downed power lines and smoke, and that could have been the reignition of that fire after it was contained. nbc news has not independently verified those videos yet. we're hearing reports from several people including one guy who says that fire started behind his home, and now there are concerns that that may have been sparked by hawaiian electric's power lines. that is the company named in these three lawsuits. they claim that the company should have deenergized those power lines with the fire threat due to those high winds. that is a practice we usually see in california, certain power companies will notify residents they are shutting down the power so that in the event that equipment fails or power line

nbc's dana griffin once again on the ground for us there. there is real concern about chemicals in the air, in the water. talk to us about what you're seeing and hearing today, dana. >> reporter: well, chris, it is so concerning. that's why we're wearing n95 masks. some people are even wearing goggles. we're seeing a lot of crews going in doing the search and recovery, they've got on respirators. we know the hawaiian department of transportation is installing dust screens. they are going to act like a filter, similar to wearing a mask, so that the particles in the soil and air do not blow back on to the town of lahaina, that is still preserved, and where we have seen people still walking around. we are less than 100 miles from this decimated area. the area is blocked off to travelers, but you can see just how burnt out the homes and cars are. it almost looks like a scene from an apocalyptic movie. this does not feel real. it does not seem like this is reality, but this is the grim reality for so many people who had to run and flee during thos

dana griffin joins us from maui. what is the very latest there? >> reporter: jose, good morning to you. it is 5:00 a.m. local time. we're outside one of the evacuation centers at maui high school. we're starting to see more people wake up, walk around. we have seen some people still sleeping in their cars or going in and out of this evacuation center behind me. a lot of them have lost homes, have lost pets, and unfortunately have lost loved ones. we're hoping to talk to more people as the sun rises and that's when crews are going to head back out and just about an hour or so when the sun comes up to assess the damage, get a better sense of how much land has been scorched, how many businesses and homes still remain damaged. there are 300 plus homes, businesses and historical landmarks that have been lost to this fire. and there could be more. we heard from several people, survivors, people who were helping others to evacuate. listen to what they have been saying. >> my mom's place is gone. my place is gone. pretty much everybody i know lost everyth

we begin with dana griffin on the ground in maui. what's the latest on recovery efforts there. >> reporter: chris, right now, there is an effort to try to search the town of lahaina has been decimated by these fires to try to find these missing people. we've heard from fema, they are asking people if you have been impacted to apply for federal assistance. you can go to disasterassistance.gov and for people missing family members, there are still hundreds missing. they have set up a family assistance center at the community center, about 2 miles from where we are right now. we're at kings cathedral, another shelter where they have about 30 to 40 people still inside because so many people are actually starting to move to hotel rooms. they set aside 500 rooms for people most impacted. the sad things is not knowing for family members who are desperate to know what happened to their loved one. we have talked to people about what this whole ordeal has been like for them. take a listen to what one resident had to say? >> we have been to a l

. >> nbc's dana griffin is in maui for us. tell us more about the president's visit and how it was received by residents there. >> reporter: so, ana, he spent a little under six hours on the island. he toured the devastated area from the air and also on the ground, visiting that 150-year-old banyan tree that burned, but is still standing. the president using that as a symbol of what the community can get through. he said that he hopes that this community will be able to rebuild the way that they want, honoring the sacred traditions and honor the people there. and its deep-rooted history. he said it is going to be hard and he, you know, made mention that this is an overwhelmingly devastating area. but he says that people can get through this and some of the headlines here on the front pages of the local papers read just like what the president said, whatever it takes, as long as it takes. he also met with elders in the community, they did a special blessing that was not recorded on camera, per community request. and then he spe

joining us from maui, nbc's dana griffin. good morning. what's the latest there today?> reporter: jose, good morning. it is a new day, and there's a lot of changes happening today evacuees are going to start moving in to about 500 hotel rooms that have been set aside for them. airbnb is working out a way to create some long-term housing for people. that is the greatest need here today. when you talk about the fire moving a mile a minute, it makes sense because we have been hearing from so many people saying they looked outside, thought they had time to pack up, but it came so quickly their homes were surrounded within minutes, within seconds. we spoke with one guy, i want to warn some people it may be difficult to listen to this, this guy talked about how he escaped the inflammation. -- flames. he was with a friend. he jumped in the ocean. his friend stayed behind. here's what happened next. >> i ran out of the car and ran for my life. ran down to the ocean. i was only a quarter mile from the ocean, and they stayed in their car. they died with their dogs. three of my fr

. >> reporter: dana griffin joins us from maui wlachlt are you seeing there today?reporter: good morning to you. right now it is about 5:00 a.m. local time. all is quiet. people are still inside sleeping. hundreds once again slept inside this evacuation center. many have had their lives upended and some barely escaped the flames. we are seeing images as you can see on your screen of this burned out skeleton of lahaina, the historic town, which is the ocean front tourism industry that is -- that is just -- as you can see, obliterated. you can still see some of the smoke and the ashes that were left behind as these wildfires quickly moved through. we know that at this hour about 80% of the fires have been contained according to officials. again, the death toll right now remains at 55. that number is likely to grow. i've spoken to several people including a doctor who made his way to lahaina, that same day as the fire swept through. he described it as apocalyptic. and just was really thrown off by how devastating this fire was. take a listen. how many people do you thi

dana griffin. thank you. >>> and right now president biden is at camp david holding a historic summit with the leaders of japan and south korea. and they're expected to speak any minute now. this is the first stand-alone meeting between the three countries, and it's especially significant because japan and south korea have historically had an icy relationship. now president biden is hoping to smooth things over in the face of a growing threat -- china and north korea. nbc's chief white house correspondent kristen welker joins us live from the white house. what are we expecting to hear? >> reporter: well, gabe, good afternoon. we are expecting some deliverables to come from this first of its kind summit at camp david. we anticipate that these three leaders will announce new military cooperation, including annual military drills, new intelligence sharing, including what is being referred to as a three-way hotline. this would effectively allow these three leaders to be in contact in case of a crisis,

first, we'll go to nbc news' dana griffin outside a shelter in maui. you've been speaking with beam who fled lahaina, still have family left behind. what are the biggest needs they have in that community right now? >> reporter: right now the biggest need is housing. you know, there's about 1,100 evacuees that are in shelters like the one behind me, and the pastor i spoke with says there's only about 30 to 40 inside right now because they're starting to move them into hotel rooms. but the issue is those hotel rooms are only going to be available for 30 days. there's going to be another challenge of figuring out more permanent housing until lahaina can be rebuilt which could take years if not decades. we've also spoken to people who are very frustrated because -- we've seen friend foods being dropped off at the shelters. the greatest need is lahaina and beyond. they're not allowing anyone in unless you can prove that you live there. i spoke with one woman over the weekend. here is what was frustrating her. listen. >> where is the -- they're letting touri

first let's go to hawaii and nbc news correspondent dana griffin. so many people there just lost so much and the fires are still burning. communications are still down, evacuations are still underway. i know you're at one of the shelters where people are trying to seek cover and comfort. tell us what you're seeing and hearing right now. >> good morning, ana, right now it's about 4:00 in the morning. we're outside of maui high school where about 3 to 400 evacuees slept here overnight. everyone is devastated. a lot of people are still sleeping this morning. so we haven't -- we've seen a few walking around. as you mentioned, this is just unprecedented and it's devastating. people have lost loved ones. they've lost pets. they've lost homes. some 300 plus businesses, homes, and landmarks are now destroyed. we are about 13 miles from the historic lahaina district, popular for tourists. this community fueled by the tourism industry. it is just devastating not only for people but also for the local economy. you know, yesterday just before sunrise when this

nbc's dana griffin joins me from maui with more now. this top official out.t more do we know about his resignation and the investigation into the response? >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, ana. i can say with him defending not sounding that alarm because he was worried that people would go into the flames. others here in maui argue that would have at least alerted people, elderly people who don't have cell phones or did not have their tvs on or radios on, they at least would have stepped outside and common sense would have told them a fire is brewing, let believe. this also comes on the heels of another official who is also being not investigated but people are also raising some questions about him, and this will likely be a part of the review that the attorney general has commissioned by this independent party because they really want to get a critical comprehensive review of decision-making that day, of policies, and what actions were taken not only before, during , and after that fire. the attorney general saying an independent review saying all asp

dana griffin is following all of this for us.nd what else are we learning? >> reporter: hi, chris, yeah, they identified the victim as professor jun j. yun, he was the adviser to the suspect. that's according to a since deleted unc profile. the shooting suspect, 34-year-old tailei qi has been charged with first degree murder and having a gun on educational property. we know that they had some sort of relationship but the motive behind the shooting remains a mystery. we were getting reports of a single shot, so there are questions now on if this was targeted. the suspect was found several minutes, up to an hour and a half later. we know investigators were looking to investigate more about why this happened and last we heard they were still looking for that 9 millimeter pistol they allege was used in the shooting. we're seeing some images here of kids jumping out of second story windows to safety because when active shooter alert is sent out, kids don't know if this is targeted. they don't know if a potential shooter is coming to t

let's go live to maui to nbc's dana griffin. na, the search process is painfully slow for the families missing their loved ones. what's the latest? >> reporter: good morning, ana. it is 4:00 a.m. hawaii time. right now we're at a shelter where several people are sweeping inside. you've got a lot of volunteers in the background staying up around the clock to make sure these survivors have everything they need. as you mentioned, the death toll likely to climb as rescue crews go back in with cadaver dogs to try to search for more bodies. we've seen such a great humanitarian effort, people bringing water, food, toiletries, supplies, to those who need them most. there are some 1,100 people still displaced. we're told that housing in hotels will actually be made available. today there's about 500 hotel rooms being set aside. the governor of hawaii has asked people of the state to open up their homes to allawi vac's in. it's been very hard by people devastated by this. still hundreds missing. it's a slow, painful process. the police chi
