news 4's darcy spencer talked to somebody who was in a similar crash, darcy? >> reporter: erica, montgomery county's action team is still on scene here, what you're looking at is the crash here. the police are taking measurements and taking pictures and collecting evidence. from what we understand, the driver who was not in the race and who was crashed into remains in critical condition. montgomery this crash scene may be the result of a race between two drivers on connecticut avenue and kensington, one of these two cars possibly involved in the race. the driver of the other car was trying to make a turn from connecticut to denfeld avenue when he was t-boned. this woman was involved in a similar crash a year ago. >> it makes me mad, really, criminal, it's irresponsible. and i think somebody will probably end up in prison for this one, though, it's pretty bad. >> reporter: the crash happened at 5:30 p.m., police say the driver of the car that was t-boned was in critical condition. the other driver, serious. police say another driver who may have been racing cam

darcy? >> reporter: erika, school officials decided on friday that they would temporarily close savoy elementary school. we learned late today that the students who attend this school are going to go to a separate school while these health concerns are addressed. savoy elementary school in southeast temporarily shut down over concerns about bedbugs and a rodent infestation. school is canceled monday and tuesday for the hundreds of students who attend savoy. starting wednesday, they're being bused here to this school is southeast where their school is thoroughly cleaned. >> i think at a certain point, city leaders began to realize that both as a matter of practicality and perception, the school needed to be closed so that parents could have confidence in bringing their students back. >> reporter: education leaders tell news4 that parents and teachers have been raising concerns about the problem since november. but they feel it wasn't being addressed fast enough. >> i think you saw at a meetin

news4's darcy spencer is live on the scene with how it all began. darcy? >> reporter: erika, this is breaking news happening right here on the 36th street in northeast washington. you see the police car right here. this is 36th street you're looking at. the street is closed off and residents are being asked to shelter in place right now, because there is someone barricaded inside the apartment up here, up the street. police have armored cars and snipers assisting with this investigation. it all started around 3:00 this afternoon when the suspect apparently stabbed someone, and that victim is expected to be okay. the suspect then went inside his apartment and refused to come out. this has been going on for more than three hours now. we have been able to hear police trying to make contact with the suspect inside that apartment, and we can't tell whether they have been able to have any negotiations with him at this point. they are trying to end this peacefully. now police have told us they do not believe that this suspect is armed. anyone's home. he's in his

darcy? >> reporter: well, erika, we are still working to shore up details of this story. here's what we have been able to piece together. apparently there was a carjacking here in the district. and at some point, a police agency began to follow a vehicle matching the description of an suv involved in that incident. but it turns out that that was not the correct vehicle. they didn't know that at the time. the driver when they tried to pull that driver over, decided to flee from police, and the vehicle took off and ended up at maryland live casino in anne arundel county. apparently, that driver parked in the parking garage of the casino and walked inside, where there were a lot of people there last night. many people, like you say, decided to evacuate, get out of there because the police presence. police questioned the man they had pursued, he was standing by a slot machine, apparently on his cell and police eventually determined that he was not involved in that carjacking. but they did search him. and during the search, they say they found more than 40 grams of marijuana.

a district man trying to fight through the smoke and flames to reach her but as news 4's darcy spencer reports, it was the d.c. firefighters who pulled her to safety. >> reporter: this is 95-year-old virginia haskell, rescued by firefighters in her d.c. home. >> i heard her yelling, what is going on? smoke is in the house. >> reporter: her soon ben said that food caught fire on the stove and the flames grew very quickly. >> well, i went to see if i could put the fire out first but it already reached the cabinet. and so that is when i called 911. >> reporter: haskell said his mom was trapped in her bedroom. >> i tried to get upstairs to get my mom, but it was just too much smoke. >> reporter: when firefighters got there, there were flames street. >> she couldn't get out, there was a lot of smoke, she probably could not get through it anyway, and she was on her bed yelling for us. >> reporter: firefighters carried her out, she was conscious and breathing on her own. >> she just celebrated her 95th birthday, and we're just very happy to bring her out and continue on these years. >> report

we begin with news 4's darcy spencer. she's in northeast with the incident that had a neighborhood on edge. >> reporter: police take a stabbing suspect into custody after he allegedly barricaded himself inside his northeast washington apartment for several hou hours. >> all the officers did a phenomenal job, took their time, did everything slowly, methodically, and made sure that none of the citizens were injured and made sure that our suspect wasn't injured as well. >> reporter: you could see s.w.a.t. officers outside the apartment building on 36th street and officers getting another view from a nearby rooftop. police say the suspect allegedly stabbed someone, then ran into the apartment and refused to come out. police tried to negotiate with him. 5 1/2 hours later they made the arrest. the stabbing victim expected to be okay. >> you were concerned about what was happening? you didn't even know if it was your building or someone else? >> well, once i heard very concerned. >> reporter: residents who live near the apartmen

. >> darcy want to bring in our chief correspondent nbc's pete williams. the department of homeland security says it will abide to temporarily suspend the order. if this is temporary, how long can this last? >> don't know how long it's going to last. the order is as though it never existed. anyone who has a visa from those countries are able to board planes from overseas. and anyone who arrives with visas from those countries are allowed to enter the country into the u.s. assuming there's nothing in secondary inspection that would cause a problem. but that's normal. so that's the situation right now. all those visas are being honored. however, the justice department, the trump administration is scrambling to try to get to the ninth circuit court of appeals out on the west coast and put a stop to the judge's order. that's going to be filed later today. if that court agrees, then presumabt start enforcing the travel restriction again. if the court doesn't, then the government would undoubtedly go to the u.s. supreme court and try to get a stay there. >> so t
