dave evans is at the hospital with that part of the story. good morning again, dave. >> good morning, rob. this is wonderful news that both police officers will be just fine. terrible what happened of course in bed-stuy earlier today at 3:20, but great news that they are going to recover just fine. one officer on the department for nine years. the other on the department for three years. we're told that the first chest but that his bulletproof vest protected him. he did suffer from blunt force trauma because of the impact of the bullet but it did not impact the vest. the second officer not hurt as badly. this is where the second officer was injured. fine. this morning at about 7:40 up on the second floor, just above the emergency room sign, the police commissioner and the mayor briefed us on what happened earlier today also on the condition of the two police officers. i think the mayer is awfully, awfully relieved that the officers will recover just fine. >> reporter: we had the opportunity to visit with them, visit with their families. they w

political reporter dave evans with the latest in midtown manhattan. >> police sources tell us there was a nasty argument here at the plaza hotel close to central park between the former governor and this alleged victim. police sources also tell us she has not helped at all with this investigation and in fact we believe she went ahead and went back to russia from jfk from a flight there on sunday night at about 7:00. so i think this one is going to be a tough investigation for police. >> reporter: the evening started with drinks. by 8:00 the 25-year-old woman called 911. she spoke of a two-year relationship with the 56-year-old former governor elliot spitzer. sources say she was distraught, having a breakdown, and claimed police went to the plaza. here a detective going in to investigate. a crime scene van nearby. police saw a cut on the woman's arm and that's why she was taken to the hospital. spitzer accompanied her and there she made the allegation that spitzer choked her earlier in the evening when she threatened to return to russia. >> the police i think based upon my experience hav

eyewitness news reporter dave evans, giving us a preview of the numbers. dave? >> not only the police commissioner, but also the mayor. they'll be here at police these new figures. as you mentioned, january, the safest month in new york city history. but there is a big concern about all of these stabbings and slashings that we've seen in the last couple of weeks. let's go ahead and take a look now at these new figures that they're going to be talking about today. first of all, homicides down 46% in the month of january. also, shootings down 35% in new york city in january. and that shootings figure, that is interesting because you might remember during the summer, we saw a spike in shootings in new york city. but now, down 35%. but going on to stabbings and slashings, those have gone up in the month of january by 20%. and that is a big worry for many new yorkers. early this week, commissioner bratton minimized this fear of this jump in stabbings and slashings. and then just an hour after that, after bratton spoke, another victim was attacked, this time on the nu

dave evans is in harlem with dave? city issued a code blue alert. the mayor earlier today with us admitted he's concerned and worried about the homeless coming in from the cold and taking shelter this weekend. last night, the city took in 63 homeless people in shelters. there were also 230 walk-ins with homeless people trying to get in from the cold and wind last night. the mayor today urged new yorkers to stay inside and check on your neighbors. if you have no heat, call 311 for help. it will be dangerously cold this weekend, the coldest, perhaps in a hundred years. the mayor says he will stay close by in case of any emergency. he urged new yorkers to up and avoid the cold. >> from this point on, we under an exceptional situation, and i need all new yorkers to understand to take all of the appropriate precautions. take this weather very, very serious. we don't see these temperatures very often, and they can be life-threatening. know if your apartment is cold as it happens, not after the fact. call 311. the rule is, if you are inside of your apartme

dave evans meanwhile is at the we begin with marcus. >> reporter: the latest on those officers, rob and michelle. they are in stable condition at the hospital. they are okay and expected to recover. here at the scene, many investigators are on the scene as you try to piece together what happened. there is a lot to go through. here's what we know, that around 3:30 this morning, we'll show you cell phone video of the immediate after-math. there was a report of shots fired. in that video, you see a dark sedan with many bullet holes in it and front end damage. that is the part of the suspect within. police say after two housing officers heard shots fired, the got into the car and took off. other police vehicles responded and at one point, the suspect's car got into a head-on collision with a patrol car. there were then shots fired. the suspect was hit multiple times. he is in brookdale hospital of gunfire. >> multiple officers fired at the suspect striking him multiple times. a .357 revolver was recovered from the suspect's front seat of his car with five spent revolver. >> reporter: again,
