joining us is deborah feyerick. how were they found? >> reporter: they were not in u.s. custody.n the custody of canadian border services. these three senior military officers were able to cross from buffalo into canada and that's when their passports and their visas were checked and they were stopped. they are now in custody. i spoke to someone with familiarity of the situation say these three seniors military officers did not break the law. they were here legally. they had passports and visas. they were not allowed to go to another country to seek asylum which appears is what they were trying to do. they were stopped at the border. it's unclear if they will go back to this base. edwards base on cape cod. this is a training exercise they were doing here along with six other nations. basically coalition team building. they get to know each other so that when the forces are there at u.s. central command in that region they can work with partners there. these three officers decided they wanted something different. something perhaps better and they left. >> what happens to them now?

joining me now national correspondent deborah feyerick. really until very recently, the name wasn't out there. >> well, that's exactly right. and what makes the khorasan group so dangerous, they have one objective only and that is to carry out a major terror attack in the west against the united states. this is a very small, hard core group of veteran al qaeda operatives. the leader, part of the 9/11 planning. he knew of the hijackers, of the plots to fly planes into the building, he knew of all things al qaeda. there are a few dozen tops. they have bomb makers but also western are yrecruits, people i syria. that also makes them so lethal. we're talking about a new generation of potential bombs, including clothing dipped in explosives as well as a type of shoe bomb device according to experts. now, an intelligence source tells me within the last week, information did come to light that the group was ready to activate to become operational is what they say. the possible plot included involving -- included a clothing that was dipped in explo

our national correspondent deborah feyerick has more on the subject. >> reporter: new details are accused about the man accused of behead ago female co-worker at an oklahoma food processing plant last week. people who knew them say they're stunned? >> he was really just a normal person. >> reporter: police say 30-year-old alton nolen is expected to be charged with first degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon, allegedly going on a knifing spree inside his workplace at vaughn foods after being fired. an fbi probe into nolen's background is under way. police say he recently converted to islam and tried to convert his co-workers. members at his mosque described him as quiet. >> you could tell he was different from everyone else, but as far as violence, we never saw it coming. >> reporter: nolen's knife spree was stopped when he was shot twice by mark vaughan, the company's ceo who's also a reserve deputy with the oklahoma county sheriff's office. shots fired recorded in this 911 call. >> sounds like he's running around out here. and that -- that's a gunshot. >> reporter: other disturb

deborah feyerick, cnn, new york. >> so there's some information on the khorasan group. we've talked about isis as well. but you also have the al-nusra front in syria. that group saying a key leader of the militant group has been killed by the u.s.-led air strikes in the country. now, the group posted this image on twitter claiming it shows abu yusef al turkey, also known as the turk. >> we need to point out cnn cannot independently verify the group's claims but there have been reports that some al-nusra fighters were killed in aleppo. the group is linked to al qaeda and has been fighting the government in syria. it's also been fighting isis, the very target of the strikes. >>> now, qatar is among the arab nations involved in the strikes over syria. the nation has put aside well-documented differences with both saudi arabia and the united arab emirates in order to take part. in fact, the uae's foreign minister said it comes down to the fact that isis is really a common enemy. >> i think it's indicative of the threat that everybody feels is common. nobody is basically imm

deborah feyerick is here with the details. what do you know about these guys? not just the state and local police. now the afghanistan defense ministry is also involved as is the u.s. military, the fbi is aware, they're also looking into the backgrounds of these men and the international security assistance forces, or isaf, in afghanistan. they are also finding out who these three men are. we know they were here in the united states taking part in what amounts to a team building, a coalition building kind of exercise. they were doing computer simulations, tactical scenarios. this is one of those situations where you bring countries together, they train with americans so that when you train in times of peace you can obviously interact much better when you are engaged in times of war and so they were here, they're highly vetted. these were a major and two captains that simply disappeared when they were at a shopping mall and so now the search is on. the question is, are they here just seeking asylum, for example? did they disappear because they were seeking asylu

cnn's deborah feyerick has been digging into this story and he had joins us now. deb, as we understand it, at least eight extreme sxifts convicted terrorists with ties to this mosque. what do we know about it? >> we know law enforcement's been looking at this mosque for a long time now because there are simply too many people to ignore the fact that something's going on here. now, that said, as you mentioned, this is the largest mosque in town. it's also the only mosque in town. so it really caters to a lot of students, a lot of immigrants, a lot of people in transit who are basically moving. you've got the red line that runs through boston and that's just a couple of blocks away. it's a very easy place for all these people to come and to pray. and what we found is that a number of the people, for example, the boston marathon bombers, the alleged boston marathon bombers, they were there, they came often. the congregation actually kicked tamerlan out at one point. but others have also gravitated to this mosque. again, it was a small community. it's grown larger ove
