derrick ward has more on why the officer won't be going home today. derrick? >> reporter: well, aaron, he has been a former police officer since the 31st of last month. this is when he was fired from the police department and just ahead of an indictment for second degree murder. now, this all stems from an incident in august of 2013. there was a call to the springfield home of john geer. there was a domestic call and during that call it ended up as a standoff with geer being shot dead. during special grand jury testimony, it was learned that the family and the officers had a lot to say about this incident. geer did tell police he had a gun and another officer had actually arrived on the scene and he was negotiating with geer when he was shot, about 40 minutes into that conversation. that shot rang out. torres testified that geer had made a move toward his waist band and therefore he thought he was going for a gun. again, torres was fired from the police department on the 31st. he turned himself in yesterday. and we also might want to mention that fairfax count
