let's get to derrick ward who is live from the scene with more. derrick? >> reporter: good morning. we are a couple blocks away. police set up a wide perimeter around the house. you can take a look here. this is essentially a play field at a school that's set up as a command post. the tragedy and i guess the excitement, not necessarily the excitement, but the quietness and tranquility of this neighborhood. this all started yesterday at 11:00 a.m. according to police a gunman shot a woman on 18th street. after that, he ran down the street, fired more shots and bolted in a house at 18th. the victim is a woman. she died on the scene. the suspected gunman said to be in his 70s hon holed up in the house since then. there have been negotiations. police are using a bull horn to get the person out. there's been no movement inside the house. response from folks that live around here say both people are neighborhood -- nobody is identifying anybody yet. they know the woman and the man involved as well. it adds to the tragedy of it all. >> i think the best part of it is that not just being con

derri derrick. >> reporter: yes, good morning. this is one of the shooting that is happened last night. there was a shooting about 10:47 in the 1600 block. officers in the sixth district were out here, part of the all hands on deck heard gunshots and responded to the scene. that's where they found three people shot in the 4900 block of b street. one person pronounced dead on the scene, another person taken to the hospital where that person died. the third victim did survive. folks in this neighborhood say one of the things they remember at the scene is it took ambulances a while to get here. when they did get here, it was a heavy response, but took a long time for the paramedics to get here. aid was administered to a victim there on the sidewalk. two of them did not survive. a third person did survive. very sparse lookout at this point. a black male and black shirt. that's all they have now. police are investigating this. all hands on deck weekend that was supposed to stop this sort of thing. they had officers here in the area, bu

derrick ward has more on why the officer won't be going home today. derrick? >> reporter: well, aaron, he has been a former police officer since the 31st of last month. this is when he was fired from the police department and just ahead of an indictment for second degree murder. now, this all stems from an incident in august of 2013. there was a call to the springfield home of john geer. there was a domestic call and during that call it ended up as a standoff with geer being shot dead. during special grand jury testimony, it was learned that the family and the officers had a lot to say about this incident. geer did tell police he had a gun and another officer had actually arrived on the scene and he was negotiating with geer when he was shot, about 40 minutes into that conversation. that shot rang out. torres testified that geer had made a move toward his waist band and therefore he thought he was going for a gun. again, torres was fired from the police department on the 31st. he turned himself in yesterday. and we also might want to mention that fairfax count

derrick ward joining us now live. derrick? >> reporter: good morning. we are in the 1500 block of first street northwest. you can take a look now. it is just starting to wrap up. under the light of day, investigators are looking at the crime scene. the shooting happened around 1:00 a.m. this morning. an adult male shot three times. that person died on the scene. as you can see now, this is the grizzly aftermath where a fire truck comes and is washing up the blood. police responded to a robbery in the 1100 block. that was two to three hours after that. there's no indication the two may be related. in that instance, they are looking for six people, three females an three males. no lookouts regarding this shooting. we don't have an identity of the victim. people said they didn't hear anything. there was a crowd of people at the time it happened. it's unusual. they are still out there checking out the scene. probably looking for shell casings or evidence as they are about to reopen this block of 15th street. if you take this road, it has been closed since 1

derrick ward is live with more. derrick? >> reporter: yeah, you know, he was actually scheduled to teach two courses here at american university. one was a government course advanced studies in public policy. the other was an honors course on the oral history of the civil rights movement. so it leaves a hole here in the staff and in the curriculum at american university. you know, he was also known here especially in this town for making a lot of appearances on "meet the press." we actually found some video from back in 1966 i think it was when julian bond was speaking on that show and we talked to him, the host actually talked to him about one of the issues of the day, civil rights. >> certainly the right to free speech, the right to dissent, the right to voice an opinion that's unpopular. secondly, the right of people in this case my constituents to be represented by someone they chose. >> and also we have things pouring in from the locals. not the least of which, eleanor holmes norton. she talks about him being the champi

derrick ward has more on what happened. derrick? >> reporter: good morning. a little correction for you. this fire actually started earlier than we first reported. it actually started around 11:00. now, it was around 11:00 when the fire broke out. we believe it was started or at least concentrated in a stairwell which made it difficult for some folks to get out. but we did talk to a woman who did manage to get out. >> someone had knocked on the door and i looked through the peep hole. i saw the smoke and stuff. >> how did you get out? >> i came out through my window. right there. >> reporter: now three people had to be rescued with ladders by firefighters here in prince george's county. and there's a firehouse right -- maybe a quarter of a mile from here, just across 450 which managed to get them here soon enough that it wasn't a lot worse. now, we don't know the extent of the damage, but you can look here and see from the outside that most of the damage seems to be concentrated in the stairwell area. the awning is gone, the stairwell is black and several apa

news4's derrick ward has more on what's new this year. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, again. this is a newest school in the school system. it was just dedicated earlier this month. the chris yung elementary school is named for the police officer who was killed in the line of duty. this school is dedicated to him. also dedicated to i guess the new frontiers in education. a lot of diversity. it reflects the diversity of the county and new, innovative ways of teaching. we hear a lot about s.t.e.m. science, technology, engineering and math, well, they have added an "a" here. the principal tells us what that "a" is about. >> the arts will allow us to tap into that creative mindset and kind of make sure that we're teaching and supporting the whole child. >> reporter: from s.t.e.m. to s.t.e.a.m. that principal is very excited. she says she's as excited as she would have been if they was a student. any minute now, 80 buses will be pulling up here. students and parents will be getting used to the new school here here in prince william co

news4 derrick ward talked to neighbors who new the victim. >> reporter: the adults warned the children not to ride their bikes across those puddles on the sidewalk. they don't tell them why. they don't tell them they are blood stained or three men were shot last night at 11:44. they found the victims and two would be the 104th and 105th murders. they were more than numbers. >> they called me mr. johnson. >> reporter: police identified the victims as 26-year-old amani johnson of northeast and 21-year-old sha heed james of clinton. >> reporter: there's a bit of outrage amidst the highly publicized all hands on deck. >> reporter: six overses were close enough to respond on b street in short order. not quickly enough. they can't be everywhere at once. >> i'm kind of appalled this has happened. >> reporter: there was another weekend spade of shootings across the city six different scenes including a man shot at 4400 block of 6th place and man wounded at 18th street around 2:45. a total of nine victims at six scenes kept fire and ems crews busy. witnesses to the b street scene said principle

news 4's derrick ward joins us live. >> reporter: it ended about ten minutes after 5:00. we saw emergency vehicles start to leave. still a pris presence on this street and folks breathing a sigh of relief. some saying, we've got our neighborhood back. by all accounts, the woman who was a beloved member of this community is gone. it appears to have ended peacefully after a nearly 30-hour standoff. a suspect handcuffed is placed into an ambulance. it began violently. it started with a shooting, 63-year-old loretta carswell is shot dead in the street, killed by a cousin. >> he calls her outside. she goes outside. he shoots her. >> the suspect then runs back up the block to the house, fires off a couple more shots and the standoff begins. police intact cal gear set up around the house. the entire block, a large slab of this d.c. neighborhood is cordoned off. >> charmaine hawkins left friday morning before it happened. she hasn't been able to go home since. she lives on the block that's now under siege and has had to stay with relatives. her longing for home is only rivaled by

our derrick ward is live at american university where bond was a professor. derrick? >> reporter: well, indeed. you know, we all know about the iconic status of julian bond with the civil rights movement. he was actually the first and founding president of the southern poverty law center which is still around. up from the '90s to around 2010 he was the head of the naacp but he had significant connections to the city. he would be here lobbying and testifying capacity. but he also taught at american university and he was scheduled for two classes this fall semester. there was a government and advanced studies in public policy course and an honors course on the oral history of the civil rights movement. we don't know how they're going to honor if they will at american university and what status those courses remain in with him not being able to obviously teach them. but we do have a statement from the southern poverty law center. a cause which was near and dear to his heart. the country has lost one of the most passionate and eloquent voices. it holds true among the facu

derrick ward has that story. >> reporter: a prince george's police officer is on administrative leave and 30-year-old asshams farrow manley is dead following the incident that happened about 11:30 friday night. according to prince george's police it started here at marlboro pike and brooks drive. there was an accident. they say a car driven by manley was going the wrong way on brooks drive when it hit an suv. a patrol officer nearby came upon the crash and manley running from the scene. police say a female passenger ran from the car and hasn't been found. according to police the officer followed manley in his cruiser an caught up with him. >> the suspect was struggling with the officer for the officer's weapon. the officer discharged his weapon and the suspect was struck. >> reporter: police say they kept struggling and the officer fired more than once. another officer showed up and tased manley. >> the suspect was 6'7", had been shot multiple times and tased and still not xlig with officer commands. >> reporter: police say a third officer showed up and they were able to get handcuffs

derrick ward in fairfax county this morning with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning again. in about four hours, former fairfax county officer adamtortion will be arraigned -- adam torres will be arraigned and learn whether or not he will be released on bond. this is stemming from incidents that happened in august of 2013. officer torres was among the fairfax county police officers responding to a domestic situation that turned into a barricade or standoff. now, there was negotiation going on with another officer. torres apparently had his gun trained on the subject, who is now the person who died, john gear. and at some point, fired his weapon. gear was struck and killed. torres said that he thought gear might have been reaching for a weapon. other officers in reports preliminarily said they did not see the same thing. this happened almost ten days short of two years. the commonwealth attorney said it shouldn't have taken that long. let's hear from him. >> i obviously feel badly for the gear family. this case would have been ov

news4's derrick ward is in fairfax county this morning, what's the latest? >> reporter: we can expect to hear this case take a turn essentially. you know, it's a short distance from the jail to the course house. this started in august of 2013. john gear was at his home. there had been a call for a domestic disturbance. police officers showed up from fairfax county at/i23 some poin turning this into a standoff. as they were negotiating with mr. gear to come out, officer adam torres, former officer adam torres, fired his weapon, striking and killing gear in his doorway. there have been accounts of what happened. torres said he thought gear was making a move for a weapon. other officers said he had his hand up. while this process started, as we said, shortly after that, we're ten days short of two years before we go to court. the commonwealth attorney says this shouldn't have taken that long. later on today, adam torres will make his first court appearance. he was fired after an internal investigation at the end of last month and indicted this week. live in fai
