news4's derrick ward is live on north stafford street in arlington where the most vent incident took place. derrick? >> reporter: indeed, it was about a week ago when one of these incidents happened here. and there are enough similarities familiar to the three incidents that happened before that police are stepping up their patrols. the very first incident happened on april 7th including the 5200 block of eighth road south. 12 days later you hit another one on the 5200 block of 30th street north. now what are the similarities? the children who were approached in both of these cases tried to get them to go with him. they we one was on april 23 and one that happened a week ago on april 25th in the 2500 block of north stafford. again, the children were walking along when someone tried to get them to go with them. in one of the incidents, the suspect was seen driving away in a dark colored sedan. but the similarities are enough that police are stepping up patrols and want folks to be on aware this is happening. there's no definitive link among the cases but many similarities that they wan

news4's derrick ward is live right now derrick? >> reporter: we're in here in the 700 block in upper marlboro. you see the house where this happened is still being secured by police. it is still a crime scene. now, we have learned some new information about what transp e transpired here, at least something about the victim. take a look at the scene earlier this morning. it was about 12:40 last night or 12:40 this morning when police were called to the scene to check on the welfare of a person. when they got here, they found an adult male who was pronounced dead on the scene. tay ear not saying how that person was killed only that the body had trauma. sources tell news4 that the victim actually is a resident of this neighborhood but not of this particular house. and police have not release ld any information about names of the victim or who lives in this house. they did tow a car away from the scene earlier today, and some distraught relatives of the victim appeared here briefly while the investigation was going on. as we said, this

news 4's derrick ward is in stafford where we're learning more about the shooting and the deputy's condition. derrick, good morning. >> reporter: well, indeed, that deputy is in the hospital now. multiple gunshot wounds, but he is going to need surgery. and as you see behind me it's still a crime scene here as this is investigated. it started around 11:00 p.m. with a call to police about someone breaking into a house in the 100 block of windsor ridge court in stafford county. the call came from someone inside the house allegedly being broken into and deputies from the stafford county sheriff's department responded. >> deputies responded to the call. and when that response occurred, shots were fired, multiple shotted were fires. >> reporter: one of those deputies was hit in the thigh, arm and upper chest. he survived. >> the body armor protected his upper chest and saved his life. >> reporter: police say the suspect 19-year-old joshua sumter ran after the shooting and tells news 4 the suspect was spotted at this minimart near the scene. by closed in on the suspect here at the jefferson place

derrick ward talked to the people who knew the victim. >> reporter: d.c. police responded to this address in the 700 block of kentucky avenue southeast around 1:45 saturday morning. when they got there, they'd found a woman. she had been shot and was pronounced dead on the scene. the victim was 40-year-old stephanie goodlow of southeast d.c. she was active at church. as word spread of her death, members were stunned. >> it is one of our members. >> reporter: a church member says the terrible news is hard to believe and it was later confirmed by the minister. >> it came from the pulpit and we're horrified. we're horrified. >> reporter: goodlow worked with the youth ministry of the church. a sunday morning service that was supposed to help father's day was no replete with the sadness of the violent loss to the church family. >> we have to keep moving on one day and one step at a time. >> reporter: there's an irony too. >> i'm in theater. i'm doing a production on gun violence. to come into church today and to hear this terrible news, it's just overwhelming.
